i'm not that familiar with miss kittin's productions except for her big hits. seems to me the helena hauff album lacks the element of camp.

levon vincent on facebook

"Techno has never reminded me so much of heavy metal as todays' era. Where has the hint of Jazz influence gone? Afro-Cuban rhythms? Still, interesting stuff these days, but can a guy get a 7th chord once and again? Why has the scene shut down all the cultural collage, the melting pot, in favor of just, angst/ angry music? Im bored."

personally i have no idea WTF he's talking about, seems to me the jazzy & soulful to dark & banging ratio is more or less the same as it's ever been, i.e. it's low but you can always find detroit-influenced stuff if you look for it. in fact i think there's probably more of that stuff around than there's been at any time since the rise of minimal.

in the comments thread on resident advisor noted ilx alum disco nihilist says he was on hardwax for 3.5 hours and found five hot records. i feel like i have the opposite problem, i was just on hardwax for an hour a couple days ago and i felt like i had turned up dozens of things i wanted

the late great, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 07:26 (eight years ago) link

sometimes i get in such a mood that i can't find anything i want to listen to, but it's never occurred to me to blame the rest of the world for that problem

the late great, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 07:50 (eight years ago) link

It's the peak tune on his Moscow Boiler Room set IMO.

Tim F, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 08:51 (eight years ago) link

tbh I like the weird experimental stuff that straddles the techno / drone metal line but honestly, that's not a huge segment of the music being released and is negligible compared to jazzy/afro-cuban stuff

sometimes if you're not finding things that meet your specific tastes it's time to branch out or open your eyes to things that fulfill your needs from a different direction

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 13:49 (eight years ago) link

OTM. Has there EVER been a time when interesting records weren't being made by someone, somewhere. That kind of Disco Nihilist (aka pipecock jr.) logic is lazy to the point of, well, nihilism, if not just trolling, but is also really narcissistic - as if music is designed to gratify your specific and immediate tastes, and the world is wrong and needs to rise to your level. But mostly, denunciation is the lowest form of critique, especially when ignorance masquerades as prowess.

Arguably worse than that, though, is the quasi-scandal (and mostly I'm talking about the RA post) disingenuously built up around it. where does "i'm bored" (and NOT "I'm bored of techno) translate to "demigod levon vincent declares all techno dead, r.i.p. all techno." I mean, who fucking cares?

EDB, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:30 (eight years ago) link

"this has been a bad year for music" / "no one is making good music" = "i am not seriously trying to find good music"
forever and ever amen

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:39 (eight years ago) link

it's especially galling from someone whose job is partly to find the music that's not getting enough attention and bring it to people's notice

most techno producers are so insecure that they need to cut the rope on the bridge to authenticity island as often as possible. if you can tie yourself on to jazz while doing so, all the better.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 17:47 (eight years ago) link

the other thing that's funny about this is seeing someone post it on facebook, like a producer, and all the comments were just one dance producer after another with long sad screeds about how music is just more trance-based and lacks soul and is just churned out etc etc. and half of these producers, that's how close to how i personally feel about their music - if not in the exact same words in a shorter more rude word. this kind of hero-narrative grousing about nebulous bad music while simultaneously failing to define it, call anyone out, or really paint any picture of its dominance is as normal for a techno producer as breathing.

doing my Objectives, handling some intense stuff (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:04 (eight years ago) link

i mean "half those producers, that's close to how i feel about their music"

tbh I finally read the referred-to Levon Vincent interview and he seems like a dude I would very much enjoy live and would find completely uninteresting to read in more interviews

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:21 (eight years ago) link

really, he was reacting to a mix of his being almost all music from his label, as far as I can tell. instead of just being proud of the music he's helped release it turned into some tangent about music he likes isn't very easy to find. so uh, maybe he likes lots of music but didn't want to admit he'd rather pull from his own roster

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:24 (eight years ago) link

in the woods there are many genial vibes but it is not always possible to feel them or even see them from Meadowhall

saer, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 19:23 (eight years ago) link

But even in Meadowhall the big dog sounds can be found if you are prepared to dig a little

saer, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 19:25 (eight years ago) link

Heh, my Facebook is 1/2 bitter jazz musicians being self-righteous about how techno/rap/etc is not real music, and 1/2 DJs being self-righteous about not taking requests and disco authenticity.

apropos of nothing I just remembered this local guy who would play live bongos with someone djing house music

μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 19:48 (eight years ago) link

that's pretty common, isn't it? i've played on a couple bills with these NYC dudes who do it:

this phenom is one of those things that is 100% not real but if you challenge it irl you look like a dick because it turns out it's only about social formation and no one actually cares that it is 100% not real.
