constant low key struggle to fully recover its thread after that

last three songs might be the album's best stretch though. "paradise" omg

i had forgotten j cole's verse on "planez" ;_;

lex pretend, Tuesday, 8 December 2015 14:48 (eight years ago) link

What does everybody think of the Rihanna soundalike on "I Did"?

Evan R, Tuesday, 8 December 2015 15:27 (eight years ago) link

j cole's vers on planez is a contender for worst rap verse on a r&b song ever.

*verse

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 8 December 2015 15:40 (eight years ago) link

is there a version without that?

Spottie, Tuesday, 8 December 2015 15:55 (eight years ago) link

not an official one but someone made an edit w/o cole's verse lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMxrTfsSdjU

it would be easily one of my singles of the year without that garbage

oh boy do i love this record

I want to love this but I keep imagining Kehlani singing these tunes. All those guest appearances on shitty records destroyed my good will.

maybe i'm just a sexy dinosaur but this seems an interesting if not eccentric criteria for this that hadnt overly occurred to me. i guess it would successfully come under modern 'x n chill' standards but

can't see how ty even comes into the equation beyond a general stripclub leer

the original beach house was totally sexual tho ... songs like "DTF" and "Forbidden Fruit" explicitly so

This album I don't hear Bryson Tiller so much...he sounds like Drake. This is spare in a way that's more Sam Cooke 'night beat'

xxp Not suprising considering the lack of promotion and the three year delay. I wonder if it was ready to drop when Don't Tell 'Em was on the radio every five seconds.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 December 2015 19:01 (eight years ago) link

"paradise" is amazing but "oui" makes me dance involuntarily

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Monday, 14 December 2015 19:05 (eight years ago) link

i feel like the opening third of this album touches greatness but doesn't always get there or maintain it, but the final third (excluding "don't tell em") really fulfils that promise

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 14 December 2015 19:07 (eight years ago) link

I feel that way about the whole album: it's just below great or near great

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 December 2015 19:08 (eight years ago) link

it's too soon for me, i've been enraptured by bits of it but i haven't been compelled to loop it, but i haven't especially been in that sort of mood

Most of his full length projects have underwhelmed me at first—they seemed either uneven or somehow incomplete—but they've all had a lot of staying power so I suspect this will too

he would have to have done nothing commercially successful since "Birthday Sex" to even qualify for Connecticut Fever status

my bf and I had to drive home late at night from Pennsylvania and we were listening to this album and "paradise" was playing as we pulled up, parked in our garage and came home and it was such a smoochy moment somehow

who does this even apply to? i was one (relatively few) vocal fans of the first album, and i have mixed feelings about the tape but "773 Love" is a great song, i wish it had gotten on the radio.

i wasn't talking about sales, i was referring to the romanticisation and elevation of an artist on to a bit of a weird pedestal. i mean, that's not a bad thing, i was part of cassie fan club, if you hear it in the music you hear it in the music, but it shouldn't be surprising when others aren't quite as enraptured by the minutiae of their breathing

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 14 December 2015 23:42 (eight years ago) link

so you're just talking about...music fandom? interest in a particular artist? why the hell is Captain Hyperbole telling anyone else to tamper down the enthusiasm?

Shkreli, Martin & Wu (some dude), Monday, 14 December 2015 23:50 (eight years ago) link

i'm not? i'm describing the nature of the enthusiasm as similar to that for cassie circa 2007

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 14 December 2015 23:58 (eight years ago) link

it is possible to talk about music fandom without couching it in objective sales and stats figures

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 14 December 2015 23:58 (eight years ago) link

Bought the album. I like it a tiny bit more each time I play it, definitely a grower.

RAP GAME SHANI DAVIS (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 15 December 2015 03:16 (eight years ago) link

this feels hit and miss after several listens but the hits are quite good. i generally need more time with jeremih to warm, willing to be patient.

i'm not sure how i missed the remix of "planes" with chance but this is an instant replacement

(i think the beat is slightly different too?)

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 15 December 2015 17:51 (eight years ago) link

the beat's completely different. it's kind of annoying that there's no version of the original beat w/ Chance on it, since that was presumably what existed before Cole replaced Chance on the song.

Shkreli, Martin & Wu (some dude), Tuesday, 15 December 2015 19:17 (eight years ago) link

there are some really great tracks on this album and it feels of a piece. i still might prefer the Shlohmo EP that no one talks about though.
