I like Marc Masters' ballot the best so far

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Friday, 15 January 2016 12:56 (eight years ago) link

I forgot about that Obnox album he listed. They/he were good live last year. I like the punkier and poppier (Chills) stuff he listed, more than the noisier/experimental ones.

curmudgeon, Friday, 15 January 2016 14:38 (eight years ago) link

Ha. I'm the opposite.

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Friday, 15 January 2016 14:47 (eight years ago) link

instead of making it feel like a very boring day job

man can't you just let these sad pros have their fun

I'm finding that searching the furia stats is much easier/better (can search by artist for example).
Glenn is there a way to search for 'breadth'? I think that's a stat of interest to me.

campreverb, Friday, 15 January 2016 17:08 (eight years ago) link

Glenn, not sure if this is anything you're actually interested in or care about, but have you ever inquired about getting older data?

I know the voice site swallowed and distorted many of the aughts polls, but I bet the original ballots are somewhere to be found...

I know I can def access, like, my 2003 ballot via wayback machine

I just clicked on the 5 most similar ballots to MMast3rs and there were a couple Wilco votes here and there, but lots of other stuff I didn't know (granted, Dinsdale, you and I are different humans).

D*ve S3gal of The Stranger in Seattle - who is one of Mast3rs' similar ballots, and may be on ILM? - is a fave of mine as far as finding interesting/weird/good stuff.

alpine static, Friday, 15 January 2016 18:37 (eight years ago) link

why are you googleproofing their names

Yeah that's a very useful feature, I've found some stuff I plan to investigate.

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Friday, 15 January 2016 21:07 (eight years ago) link

I've asked about older data before, yes. So far it hasn't been a priority for them, but with the upcoming sale and potential data-system changes I'll ask again.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 15 January 2016 22:06 (eight years ago) link

I mean, I'm sure a site like furia that they don't own or make a penny of ad money from is zero priority to them, but I was just thinking maybe an intern could dig it up for shits and giggles

Marc is my closest P&J neighbor. We share two albums.

I don't think Dave S. is an ilxor, or at least I feel like I'd know if he was. Maybe a lurker? Idk

Just in case someone here is in charge of the pazz+jop thing, the Shopping album listed is their 2013 release, the new one is called Why Choose

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Saturday, 16 January 2016 13:18 (eight years ago) link

Let me rectify: the 2015 album is there but one critic voted for the 2013, I assume he got the title wrong

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Saturday, 16 January 2016 13:27 (eight years ago) link

Well I'm dumb, he voted for both and the 2013 was also reissued last year so... Let's pretend the last three posts never existed.

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Saturday, 16 January 2016 13:32 (eight years ago) link

Hey glenn, if you're still soliciting corrections: "Kime Ne - Insanlar" has the artist and track title reversed.

Thanks!

ten months pass...

so, uh, is this still happening

it's a reasonable question. Glenn are you on it this goround?

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

wasn't last year's ballot mailing not done until December too?

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:36 (seven years ago) link

Yes, it's still on. I don't have anything to do with it until after voting closes, but I know ballots haven't gone out yet, so nobody has missed anything.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

cool, thanks!

CHristgau is writing for the Voice again. I wonder if he'll be involved

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 19:55 (seven years ago) link

thanks! (for some reason I keep thinking the initial email comes out in november)

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 22:47 (seven years ago) link

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 2 December 2016 01:15 (seven years ago) link

Last year's ballot showed up Dec. 4, so they're not running late.

dow, Friday, 2 December 2016 02:03 (seven years ago) link

I swear, every other year when I try to vote I encounter some sort of technical crap that makes it impossible, then I wind up having to re-enter everything.

Ballot arrived today. I'll probably submit the same top 10 I sent The Wire.

"Welcome to the Village Voice's annual Music Critics Poll (formerly known as Pazz + Jop)"

RIP Pazz + Jop

geoffreyess, Saturday, 3 December 2016 02:09 (seven years ago) link

Why would you fuck with the name? Especially for generic ass one?

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 3 December 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link

"NFL Annual Championship Game Between the American and National Football Conferences"

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 3 December 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link

Probably some unhip marketing person going "what's a Pazz"? What's a Jop?" No one knows what means.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 3 December 2016 21:17 (seven years ago) link

what that means

curmudgeon, Saturday, 3 December 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Good for them. "Pazz and Jop" is a fucking terrible name.

whereas the hip marketing person is strutting around like 'Pazz! Jop! Zappatypow! Hoobalooba! Ramalama shakkow! Zump! Haha'

sleepingbag, Saturday, 3 December 2016 23:11 (seven years ago) link

i agree that pazz & jop was always an awful name

dyl, Sunday, 4 December 2016 01:25 (seven years ago) link

it had a shred or two of character though

who gives a fuck about the annual Music Critics Poll

qualx, Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:53 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, if anything, now it sounds LESS interesting.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:55 (seven years ago) link

anyway i have no idea how i'm still getting invited to participate, i haven't done any music writing in years and i could've sworn there was a point where they were like "please resubmit your credentials" or w/e, maybe not

qualx, Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:55 (seven years ago) link

I voted for either 2 years or maybe 3 years in the mid-00s, and then one year nobody sent me a ballot and I never bothered to find out why because I'm lazy. And now it's been a really long time since I've written anything anywhere.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 4 December 2016 02:58 (seven years ago) link

Is there a VV contact more responsive and/or less inundated than the generic address through which the ballots are sent? Trying to get a colleague added to the mix.

Andy K, Friday, 9 December 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

Neil deMause, the Special features editor is listed on the email that was sent out but not his email

His about page just gives a form link to send messages to a general box I think

perhaps it will be for the best if it isn't counted, I forgot to put swan song series on it

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Sunday, 25 December 2016 03:04 (seven years ago) link

Heck, I forgot to *listen* to Swan Song Series. It's not every year Tanya Donelly and Kristin Hersh both release insanely long albums, and I barely got to either :(
