lol the other two header stories have been updated but 'announcing new website' is still the big one
i mean ffs
― carly rae jetson (thomp), Monday, 14 March 2016 12:39 (eight years ago) link
in news the two stories i hid by setting it to filter out rock were 'scharpling and wurster appear on the simpsons' (ok i guuuuuuuess) and 'majical cloudz play final show'
― carly rae jetson (thomp), Monday, 14 March 2016 12:41 (eight years ago) link
home pages are still going to be the number one traffic page on most sites
― robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 14 March 2016 13:02 (eight years ago) link
isn't it totally normal for websites that redesign to have a little summary of the redesign near the top? i expect that'll be up there all day
― Karl Malone, Monday, 14 March 2016 13:11 (eight years ago) link
lol yes of course, idk how you can fault a website for explaining what they've changed and why they've changed it for, like, the first several hours after relaunching
― sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 14 March 2016 13:17 (eight years ago) link
but there is important news about what someone said about someone else that should be at the top, especially if someone else said that something was wrong but someone else says that the someone is also wrong

for god's sake please insert the music news drip into my carotid artery, i need a steady feed of exclusive news
― Karl Malone, Monday, 14 March 2016 13:22 (eight years ago) link
the real scandal is that they decided to rip off CNN with their HTML title: "The Most Trusted Voice in Music"
― Karl Malone, Monday, 14 March 2016 13:30 (eight years ago) link
this looks weird to me too but i'm sure pitchfork has tons of data about where people actually scroll and click that led them to altering the site in this way so \(o_O)/
― J0rdan S., Monday, 14 March 2016 13:43 (eight years ago) link
i did sort of like that they were one of the sites with a background that was a different color than white
The "Best New Music" tag seems quiet now imo. I thought announcing that was their bread and butter, in the sense that's it's been their main taste-making validation tactic.
― Evan, Monday, 14 March 2016 13:50 (eight years ago) link
^ I think we can assume that album reviews aren't being read as much as they were judging from the overall redesign.
― Position Position, Monday, 14 March 2016 14:26 (eight years ago) link
tbh i only really ever read the news from pitchfork and even with that i only get 3 headlines, have to scroll past a bunch of crap i don't want to see. that's not to say that their previous design with that tiny scrolling newsbox was much better, i just liked having it all in one place
also they left their sourcemaps on</nerdlolz>

man, look at this thread of esteemed media professionals giving "YOU DUN GOOFED" opinions about a website redesign, did I fall asleep and wake up at #SXSWi?!?!
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 14 March 2016 15:11 (eight years ago) link
I liked about the previous site that you could hover over an album cover on the main page's reviews and then get a brief summary of what the album/artist was in addition to the review's "thesis" or whatever you'd call it. I am probably not more likely to open review links now that that feature is gone. Agree too that the news with all the images is more cumbersome than before.
― eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Monday, 14 March 2016 15:18 (eight years ago) link
that innovation is def gonna please all the 4chan "cuckfork" ppl who think they're giving rap and R&B unjustly high scores because of "white guilt"

Well, they overrated the Anderson .Paak album, but I'm not ready to leap to conclusions.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 14 March 2016 17:03 (eight years ago) link
They got rid of the option to look at 8+ rated albums
― Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 14 March 2016 17:19 (eight years ago) link
I like that the redesign gives a little more emphasis to the other four non-banner albums that get reviewed every day.

this design kind of sucks
better on mobile sure i guess but it is bad
― marcos, Tuesday, 15 March 2016 14:29 (eight years ago) link
gradually the internet is turning into series of blocky article summaries arranged into grids. i feel like i'm using Finder and it's set to display everything as giant Icons and it can't be changed
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 March 2016 14:35 (eight years ago) link
not just pitchfork, of course. this is the new shitty way to arrange websites, it blows
if it were up to me, entire websites would be replaced by a single search bar, dubbed "the tagfinder", and you'd just have to search for what you want, google style, except that all the tags would be somewhat arbitrary and silly, Awl-style. forgot the name of the website? you just type in "name of website" and maybe it'll come up in the search results, maybe it won't. enough hand holding!
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 March 2016 14:39 (eight years ago) link
did they stop including links to play tracks in the reviews? too bad if so, that was convenient.

on the plus side you have 1/3rd the page devoted to an ad for "The Sexiest Cat And Mouse Game On Television"
so if Existential Synthesizer Music isn't your jam.... how about some prime time CBS?

this design kind of sucksbetter on mobile sure i guess but it is bad
had a website redesigned last year and the developers were pushing "the mobile web" as the primary thing to think about. if I didn't like the way something looked on my laptop, they'd encourage me to look at it on my phone, to really understand that that was what they were designing for. it was annoying as hell
― tremendous crime wave and killing wave (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 18:09 (eight years ago) link
Something like 65 percent of the traffic to my day job's site comes via phone now. I'm working on redesigning it into a single endless column of text rather than discrete pages. It's annoying.
― the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 15 March 2016 18:27 (eight years ago) link
striking the balance between looks good on screen and looks good on phone/tab is important imo, some websites are basically unusable on the latter and it sucks
― flopson, Tuesday, 15 March 2016 19:51 (eight years ago) link
i enjoyed their feature where you could see the albums, tracks and headlines that received the most traffic over the past 7 days, 30 days or 90 days. i thought it was kinda fun and helpful for knowing what stuff was exciting their readers. i'm clicking on the review expecting it to be there, but it's not there.
