the fact that this is a seated event kinda undercuts the primary (sole?) appeal of this kinda festival -- which is that, if you get there early and really commit, you can generally get up-close to multiple acts for which up-close tix would ordinarily be prohibitively expensive.

but i also understand why it's seated, given what's likely to be the average age of the attendees.

last show neil played down by the river for 35 minutes

saw him last year at a somewhat star-studded willie nelson tribute. he was the only one to play multiple songs and the only one to refuse to play with the house band. (i like to think this was in part due to his wonderfully uncooperative nature and not solely because of the nelson family connection.)

promise of the real a great backing band, though.

this fest is also good cuz it's the last chance a lot of gen xers will get to rail against old people, enjoy the moment

Pretty sure $399 at the Stones at least gets you a seat.

the location is kind of a red herring -- it's the desert, but unless it's windy, you'd only notice that due to the dryness. the absurdity of the coachella festival aside, if it's still like it was in 2008, it's an amazing venue. the polo field is immaculately fertilized and trimmed grass and you can very easily go barefoot. virtually no humidity, and avoiding the middle of the summer, means that it's hot during the day but in open air it's much, much better than any outdoor festival with 90 degree heat would be in the midwest. and after the sun goes down, it's in the 60s/70s (much like the heydays of this festival's attractions).

camping is great at those temperatures, and it's within commuting distance of palm springs, and even taking amtrak from los angeles is less than an hour iirc

Rolling Stones came last year and mostly filled up the Citrus Bowl. a whole buncha locals were like "omg who would pay to see THIS" and posted cherry-picked photos of a frail looking Keith Richards. lot of my friends (ranging from like 20s to Medicare-age) went and said it was great, albeit setlist was predictable, but still - if you've never seen em, who cares?

I mean the whole 'who wants to see them, they're old' applies more to former golden-throated singers whose voices have been ravaged by the cruel hands of Father Time, but Mick Jagger ain't exactly got that problem, and unless Keith Richards is decrepit enough to have handlers on stage move his hands into the correct chord positions, why not? kinda wished I'd gone.

the Who, on the other hand, Daltrey has sounded bad for decades and I could see being put off dude trying to croak out "Lurv, reign o'er maaaaaaay"

Neil's voice is still in pretty good shape. Lost some of it's super-high upper register on stuff like After the Gold Rush but that's about it.

Daltrey sounded very iffy for most of the '00s, but this year and last, he's sounding great (though, tbf, the climactic "Won't Get Fooled Again" scream is on tape). I last saw them in March, and he was hitting notes he couldn't hit in 1989.

There is one reason to not miss the Who: Townshend's playing. He's been exploring this insane Coltrane-esque fingerpicking thing since the late '90s. The setlist won't surprise you, but his playing will.

xpost - yeah which is part of the problem. fans will give you leeway on that and would be amazed what one mere full step opens up when your chords are aging. fuck authenticity - sure, lowering the key too much will rob a song of some intensity, but I prefer not having anxiety every time you get to a high note.

Ha, actually, the Who raised "My Generation" to A for decades...until last year, when it was lowered to G (which is its key on the record anyway).

Weird, I saw the Who tour Quadrophenia a couple of years ago, and it seemed like Pete was ceding a lot of his playing and vocals to his brother. They sounded great, though. Pino and Zak (egad, Ringo's son is 50!) a great replacement section.

Speaking of which, it's not too late for all the Beatle kids to get in on this! This is basically Sean Lennon's wheelhouse: Coachella, funny hats, rich people and models plus a surviving Beatle and another Beatle's son. Get Ringo here, Dhani, Julien, um, Paul's son, Lenny Kravitz and Joss Stone, and it will be one for the ages!

Pete will let Simon do rhythm parts, and occasionally a lead line, but Pete takes all the solos. Simon did take a significant chunk of what used to be Pete vocals on the '90s and '12 Quad tours; Pete couldn't really hit those notes anymore.

Musical Box, the Genesis one, is so good even Genesis is a fan. They even had, for a while (still?) a balding left-handed drummer-singer Phil impersonator! That's got to be tough, to find a guy who looks like Phil, sounds like Phil, plays drums left handed and is actually really good.

lol... i saw them once, he sang lead vocals on one song near the end of the show and then when the peter gabriel guy came back out, someone in the audience shouted 'be careful, he's good, he might take your job' and it was a funny genesis-joke for all
