PInk Floyd from November 70, quite sublime.

Also been listening to one disc of Wee Tam and the Big Huge, I think Wee Tam, really getting into that too.

not sure how many times I'm going to listen to this. I think I wound up selling the original sometime in the mid 80s when I'd gone more punky. & I think I thought it was a lot more glossy than I really wanted it to be at the time. Seemed like big label money had come in and got some bands who I preferred in their more indie produced versions. Certainly true of the High Tide track that is the lead off one on disc 1.
But having been around at the time I thought I'd grab a copy. So far only part of the way through disc 1.

has a really nice Andrew Loog Oldham droney chamber pop production. "Summer Nights" is cool 60s art deco sadcore. this album makes me think of the Cocteau Twins a lot.

Just managed to get a back up internal hard drive to work that hasn't done in ages and found the 2lps by these on it.
Just listening to the song 60 Seconds Too Late and thinking that Mike Jones might have actually written it with me in mind. Slightly morphed though.

Tommy James & The Shondells "Mony Mony" LP (1968)

As good as the "Crimson and Clover" LP but not as good as "I Think We're Alone Now" but still i love this band. Blue eyed soul and lofi ripoffs of Motown, girl group, Jerry Lewis meets Velvet Underground, horns-and-organ-led garage rock & soul. That glockenspeil on the Del Shannon style "Run Away With Me". "I'm Taken" and "Get Out Now" both have choruses that could be by the Killers or U2 or something and feature futuristic post rock guitar and organ pop deconstruction stuff that is way ahead of its time. Dance floor killer "Night Time (I'm a Lover)" should be on David Bowie's "Young Americans" or at least "Pin-Ups" (or alongside Nilsson's "Jump Into the Fire") it has a garage psych arrangement and 4-on-the-floor drone stomp and is just a straight up rave with a great tremelo guitar arpeggio. Anyone ever heard "Hanky Panky" LP? I bet it's the best.

Obv the title song "Mony Mony" is like Nirvana. Not the band, the actual place.

Caetano Veloso & JOrge Mautner: Eu Não Peço Desculpa - for months. hugely variegated CD of samba bossa tropicalia with cutesy kitsch & traditional styles vying against some pretty wacky production (trapsy, moogs, paul leary-esque guitar?)veloso's angelic croon against mautner's drunken clown act. verily tis a keeper

massaman gai, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 10:30 (eight years ago) link

Wasn't the Tommy James & the Shondells history a bit complex. I think his first big hit was several years after initial release or at least recording. Is that Hanky Panky? & something like recorded '62 national hit '65 or am I remembering that wrong?

Stevolende, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 13:40 (eight years ago) link

xpost

They cut "Hanky Panky" in early 1964 and it was only a regional hit in the midwest. The band broke up the next year when they graduated from high school and all went their separate ways. During 1965 the song started getting traction in Pennsylvania from local DJs and bootleggers responded by pressing thousands of copies (80,000 according to wiki -- the black market really helping artists in this case!). In April 1966 Tommy James visited New England to promote the newly hot single, recruited a new Shondells for touring, and then sold the "Hanky Panky" master to Roulette Records. With a bigger label and national promotion, it ended up blowing up in July 1966.
