What's she done that qualifies as a "load of turgid shit", tho?

albvivertine, Wednesday, 25 May 2016 23:48 (eight years ago) link

Not itt

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Wednesday, 25 May 2016 23:54 (eight years ago) link

I bet you'd make a cracking guest on Desert Island Discs:p

calzino, Thursday, 26 May 2016 00:18 (eight years ago) link

Id do my best to entertain but id imagine youd do a fair bit of damage yourself!

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Thursday, 26 May 2016 00:21 (eight years ago) link

I just heard All for One now. More plodding and uninspiring than a 3rd single from an 00s Oasis album.

Freedom, Thursday, 26 May 2016 13:56 (eight years ago) link

The Beyonce example doesn't work as a lot of her fans think her first and third albums are really weak and the new material on the self titled reissue was poorly received too. It's only really her latest three albums that have been hugely popular. The Stone Roses qualify as the comments to this new single range from bizarre acts of loyalty, "it's the best song I've heard in 22 years" to finding ridiculous reasons why people are against it, "people are slagging it off before they've even heard it" and "where's your band if you think you can do better?". I've never seen any Beyonce fans search for reasons like that.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 27 May 2016 01:28 (eight years ago) link

so their shows at the Etihad have Public Enemy on the bill

the unbearable jimmy smits (jim in glasgow), Friday, 27 May 2016 20:49 (eight years ago) link

Ian's a massive fanboy.

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Sunday, 29 May 2016 21:16 (eight years ago) link

i know i can smell it from here

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 29 May 2016 22:18 (eight years ago) link

Wake up, boo

Daithi Bowsie (darraghmac), Monday, 30 May 2016 05:47 (eight years ago) link

This whole argument makes absolute sense because both Stone Roses albums are indisputably held in equally high esteem.

Matt DC, Monday, 30 May 2016 11:42 (eight years ago) link

I remember meeting Bob Stanley at Spike Island, he was a friend of a friend. I had to ask him three times what the name of his new band was, and finally just nodded and pretended I had understood. "Sainytain" or something like that. The day was a bit underwhelming, I wandered around on my own for hours on end, slightly stoned and dehydrated, and by the time the band was finally on, had developed a full on migraine. I enjoyed the gig, but it's not a great memory.

AJD, Monday, 30 May 2016 20:52 (eight years ago) link

Seeing quite a few Avalanches fans in denial this week.

groovypanda, Saturday, 4 June 2016 20:45 (eight years ago) link

So, last week it was number 17, this week..

Mark G, Saturday, 4 June 2016 21:06 (eight years ago) link

they're doing a show with Public Enemy.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 18:04 (eight years ago) link

all for one is better than frankie Sinatra

one of the only complimentary things you can say about all for one

the unbearable jimmy smits (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 18:13 (eight years ago) link

has anyone heard if they might do a gig or tour with Public Enemy?

glandular lansbury (sic), Wednesday, 8 June 2016 18:26 (eight years ago) link

that seems like such a weird bill.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 19:37 (eight years ago) link

It might figure it might be easier for PE to book a tour with old late 80s and 90s rock bands in bigger halls than somehow tour with modern hip hop groups. The fans of the Stone Roses etc. probably bought a big portion of Public Enemy's records.

earlnash, Wednesday, 8 June 2016 21:26 (eight years ago) link

new single tonight at midnight

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:32 (eight years ago) link

what are the odds that it sounds like a trashbag

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:33 (eight years ago) link

can it repeat the barnstorming chart success of uh whatever the last one was called

Trump is dong (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:35 (eight years ago) link

This one is called "Beautiful Thing"

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:37 (eight years ago) link

really happy to see you guys preemptively hating on this

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:38 (eight years ago) link

no you're right we should give this band who have done nothing of worth in more than 20 years and whose last single was a quarter-arsed ripoff of a fall song a fair hearing - this one could be an earthshattering return to form

Trump is dong (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:40 (eight years ago) link

I hope it's a U2 pastiche

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:41 (eight years ago) link

'where the steals have no shame'

Trump is dong (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:43 (eight years ago) link

Promising title.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:44 (eight years ago) link

I don't disagree that the last song wasn't spectacular, but it kind of just seems like you have a chip on your shoulder about this band. i think it's entirely possible for them to have a good song.

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:44 (eight years ago) link

it's allegedly 7 minutes long...

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:45 (eight years ago) link

I don't expect it to be anything great, but I'll still give it a listen.

7 minutes long? Hmm.

i do! they had a few years nearly three decades ago when they produced a one album and a handful of b-sides which were genuinely really good. in an ideal world, that should have been their legacy but instead they're crawling back 20 years after a disappointing second album with a massively diminished rhythm section, a guitarist who has forgotten everything he ever learned about restraint and taste, and a singer whose greatest contributions to music has turned out to be teaching liam gallagher to walk like a chimp.

Trump is dong (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:58 (eight years ago) link

Hear hear.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:01 (eight years ago) link

I'll still download the new one.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:02 (eight years ago) link

It'll be a 7 minute guitar solo, you know, not a rare groove thing.

you left out insulting mani

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:08 (eight years ago) link

do you know what a rhythm section is

Trump is dong (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:09 (eight years ago) link

yeah, but i assumed you were just talking about how Reni's drumming is allegedly subpar now. I haven't heard anyone rip on Mani's bass playing specifically. Do you have a specific complaint about his bassery?

Poliopolice, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:14 (eight years ago) link

Mani's great on those Primal Scream records

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:14 (eight years ago) link

i ready to believe there is still a chance ..

(just .. )

mark e, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:17 (eight years ago) link

true.

I don't really understand the impulse to say people shouldn't make music anymore because they made some good music 20 years ago and shouldn't "tarnish their legacy" or whatever. musicians gotta play music, it's a thing they do.

xp

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:18 (eight years ago) link

Good that they got someone who is in no way a Stone Roses fan to review the gig.

Larry 'Leg' Smith (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:19 (eight years ago) link

Browns vocals are too-often criticised by those who don’t get the reality of Madchester revivalism

the unbearable jimmy smits (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:22 (eight years ago) link

dear lord

STOP KILLING ANIMALS, THEY'RE MINT (DJP), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:27 (eight years ago) link

I wouldn't write a review that breathlessly orgasmic about sex, let alone a concert
