Tommy James & The Shondells "Mony Mony" LP (1968)
As good as the "Crimson and Clover" LP but not as good as "I Think We're Alone Now" but still i love this band. Blue eyed soul and lofi ripoffs of Motown, girl group, Jerry Lewis meets Velvet Underground, horns-and-organ-led garage rock & soul. That glockenspeil on the Del Shannon style "Run Away With Me". "I'm Taken" and "Get Out Now" both have choruses that could be by the Killers or U2 or something and feature futuristic post rock guitar and organ pop deconstruction stuff that is way ahead of its time. Dance floor killer "Night Time (I'm a Lover)" should be on David Bowie's "Young Americans" or at least "Pin-Ups" (or alongside Nilsson's "Jump Into the Fire") it has a garage psych arrangement and 4-on-the-floor drone stomp and is just a straight up rave with a great tremelo guitar arpeggio. Anyone ever heard "Hanky Panky" LP? I bet it's the best.

Obv the title song "Mony Mony" is like Nirvana. Not the band, the actual place.

Caetano Veloso & JOrge Mautner: Eu Não Peço Desculpa - for months. hugely variegated CD of samba bossa tropicalia with cutesy kitsch & traditional styles vying against some pretty wacky production (trapsy, moogs, paul leary-esque guitar?)veloso's angelic croon against mautner's drunken clown act. verily tis a keeper

Wasn't the Tommy James & the Shondells history a bit complex. I think his first big hit was several years after initial release or at least recording. Is that Hanky Panky? & something like recorded '62 national hit '65 or am I remembering that wrong?

They cut "Hanky Panky" in early 1964 and it was only a regional hit in the midwest. The band broke up the next year when they graduated from high school and all went their separate ways. During 1965 the song started getting traction in Pennsylvania from local DJs and bootleggers responded by pressing thousands of copies (80,000 according to wiki -- the black market really helping artists in this case!). In April 1966 Tommy James visited New England to promote the newly hot single, recruited a new Shondells for touring, and then sold the "Hanky Panky" master to Roulette Records. With a bigger label and national promotion, it ended up blowing up in July 1966.

i thought the astronomy domine on the us version of a nice pair was just the live take from ummagumma? some of the early us pink floyd releases are kind of confusing...

that transition around the 8 minute mark from lightning shred prog into heavy boogie riff kills me to death. and then i am reborn and then i die again.

yeah, just start it at 8:00 and listen from there. yeeesh.

wwwwwwowwwww, splendid, thank you skot! Great testimonial, too. Though personally, I wouldn't want to *just* start it around the 8 minute mark (although that does kill!), cos it had even non-prog me from the beginning. Sunny Sunday fluid dynamics-->heavy boogie seems like a classic Groundhogs move, though come to think of it not sure they ever did it this well. Guy in YouTube Comments proclaims them as Scands (says they're Danish) compatible, I'd say, w Trad, Gras, Stenar at their best or best intended, and other musical ancestors of Dungen, for isnt. Same commentator recs Ache who also are Danish and Popul Vuh(Not The German Band)/Popol Ace who are Norwegian Anybody know those? Thanks again!

Fun fact: the piano player in Midnight Sun played on one of the first Albert Ayler albums, My Name Is Albert Ayler.
(Midnight Sun were originally called Rainbow Band and they put out an album a year before the Midnight Sun album with an earlier version of "Living On The Hill" which is on Youtube. They basically re-recorded the Rainbow Band album for the Midnight Sun album. Which doesn't happen every day. Both albums are great. If you need more...)
