I'm really enjoying the debut album from Steven Julien (aka Funkineven). It's got a similar vibe to that K15 doublepack on Wild Oats from last year ie slightly jazzy deep house

Yeah pretty much. I like most of those producers, it's just that you don't seem to hear them labelled as outsider house any more

i never found it to be a useful concept, trying to decide whether something is "outsider" or not just adds unnecessary mental clutter. figuring out when and if you can play something on a dancefloor is part of the creative joy of djing and over-classification just gets in the way of that in my experience. i prefer flexible genre tags that highlight connections between diverse sounds (e.g. balearic) than tags which in my view create more division than necessary. though i guess identifying a certain strain within a genre can be useful as an organizing principle for a scene.

idk if "outsider" is useful in referring to a genre long term any more than "alternative" is, but it's a nomenclature that you can use to refer to a sound over a longer term even if it's no longer a word that holds meaning
