Ha, as I see Turrican does too.

This list makes me feel old like no other. Should probably be YHF for sheer impact on me (at the time) but on reflection it'll probably Basinski.

Neon Golden. Still holds up. One of my favorite albums ever. When One With the Freaks begins, after the more difficult middle third. It's bliss.
― Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 08:41 (eight years ago) link
Talking of Neon Golden, I once used 'you're the colour, the movement and the spin' in what I thought was a quite seductive email. The girl responded with 'are you comparing me to a washing machine?' So that went well.

i swear i only clicked on this because it was a kneejerk reaction to a year i know well but i have to ask at this point what "acclaimed music" is and why their lists are so fucking awful. THIS WAS NOT 2002.

tbf i think ilx has largely succeeded wrt 2016-era music, these are all low-key nostalgia exercises and nostalgia for the critical current of the time more than the music
― imago, Thursday, 23 June 2016 10:19 (eight years ago) link
Not a v interesting list. Will prob vote Disintegration Loops or Neon Golden (which was no "Shrink").
― a passing spacecadet, Thursday, 23 June 2016 10:56 (eight years ago) link
IIRC 2002 ILX at the time was deeply into more than half of this list

Sleater-Kinney, my favourite album from them.

I loved the Bright Eyes album at the time but must have sold it. I'm afraid to listen to it again.

Basinski. Still listen to quite a lot of these occasionally tbh.

Pretty bad list otherwise

Some good shit, lots of blehhhhh shit. Broken Social Scene is probably the only one of the lot that I still listen to with any regularity. Holds up surprisingly well but don't know if I'd consider it the best.
(Oh and actually I guess I listen to Norah Jones with some regularity, as well, here is my hip and cool card, feel free to destroy it however you choose.)

I don't even wanna know what the beef w streets is since first two albums are both stellar, voting OPM

Norah jones alb also perfect

I still listen to a few of these albums, but a lot of them have not aged so well--Flaming Lips, Interpol, 2 Many DJs and Libertines are examples (though the best songs on those records still connect). Here are my current favorites from this list:
Wilco - Yankee Hotel FoxtrotQueens of the Stone Age - Songs for the DeafSpoon - Kill the Moonlight...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & CodesSonic Youth - Murray StreetSleater-Kinney - One BeatDJ Shadow - The Private PressNeko Case - Blacklisted

Going with Neko - that record is still a remarkable mash of country, indie and punk.

Turn On the Bright Lights: dreadful lyrics, humourless vocals, very sporadic hooks. The guitar playing is good, sure.

This is a pretty weak list even by canon standards though.
It doesn't have the same kind of massive releases two previous lists
― niels, Friday, 24 June 2016 05:56 (eight years ago) link
as the two previous
― niels, Friday, 24 June 2016 05:57 (eight years ago) link
this will probably be the weakest year of these lists for this decade.

I loved a lot of these records when they came out (I was 21/22 so they were right in my wheelhouse), but S-K is definitely the one I've listened to the most over the past few years, though admittedly their resurgence had a lot to do with that. I didn't even listen to Spoon back then but now they definitely hold up better than most things I really dug at the time. Haven't revisited BSS, Notwist, Wilco, Sigur Ros for awhile but I imagine I'd encounter diminishing returns to varying degrees.
― evol j, Friday, 24 June 2016 17:32 (eight years ago) link
Spoon seem likely to take this. I like them and all, but voting for them feels like voting for Talking Heads in the 80s.
i would be very surprised if Spoon won this. the Talking Heads reference is OTM.

2002 was really a poor year for mainstream hip-hop I suppose?
― Van Horn Street, Monday, 27 June 2016 01:10 (eight years ago) link
guessing from the 2000 and 2001 polls, a hip-hop record need almost legendary status before featuring in an acclaimedmusic top 30.
― Van Horn Street, Monday, 27 June 2016 01:15 (eight years ago) link
At the time lots of these albums seemed monumental and I listened to them a ton. But I've barely played any of them in years, save for Interpol (I listen to it quite a lot still) and maybe Wilco and Sigur Ros.
― Sam Weller, Monday, 27 June 2016 10:36 (eight years ago) link
I felt like this was a truly great year for singles and radio but albums didn't match them for intensity, at least in an "obvious classic".
Love The Streets, Missy Elliott, Sonic Youth, Boards of Canada, Sleater-Kinney, 2 Many DJs, DJ Shadow.
The most obvious classics - in both the subjective and objective senses - not here are Metro Area's album and Michael Mayer's Immer mix. There are people who dislike both but I feel like both of these have a pretty rock solid stature within dance music circles.
For me the private classics not listed are Tweet's Southern Hummingbird, Amerie's All I Have, Clipse's Lord Willin, Elephant Man's Higher Level, Sean Paul's Dutty Rock, Farben's Textstar and MRI's All That Glitters. Also I never listen to it as an album but JT's singles from Justified are total classic.

The Disintegration Loops is the best work of art made in response to 9/11. Not only is the concept brilliant - intellectually and emotionally - the pieces themselves beautiful, and more so than anything else I've ever seen or heard, it evokes exactly the mood of Manhattan in the fall of 2001.

YHF one of the those records that if the melodies work for you the whole thing is majestic, if they don't it falls apart. Sometimes it is just about tone, I guess.

otm. love YHF, everything from Jim O's mix to the lyrics to the atmosphere and yeah the tunes. Summerteeth, YHF, and A Ghost is Born are amazing to me, but everything else they've ever done has left me cold.
