"Wanted: Dead or Decaf"

Kenneth Without Anger (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 05:00 (eight years ago) link

she seems to have kind of a dim view of relationships. it seems like in every song there is this idea that once the relationship ends the two exes inevitably become enemies.

― Treeship, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 00:58 (5 hours ago) Permalink

Conversely there are quite a few songs where she is really positive about her exes ("Back To December", "Holy Ground", "I Almost Do", arguably "Red"; most of the relationship songs from the last album are about being missing yr last ex and not knowing whether getting back together is a good idea or not), probably as many as those where she is outright negative.

I mean maybe like most of us she is somewhere between a nice person and an awful person.

Mine

I don't think she actually breaks up with dude in Mine though - they just have a fight at 2.30am as everything was slipping right out of their hands.

I haven't heard the Kanye song, but since everyone's talking about it now, I know it has a line that says "I made that b**h famous"... But even without the blatant sexism, does the line make any sense? Isn't Kanye talking about the Grammies episode here? I.e. when she interrupted Swift receiving a Grammy award? How can he say he made Swift famous, if she was already receiving the most prestigious music award there is before this supposed famous-making incident?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 10:23 (eight years ago) link

The Grammys are well known for launching talented, but obscure, artists into superstardom.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 10:35 (eight years ago) link

ofc she was already famous, but not quite global pop megastar famous, not at that point.

xpost it's funny that Taylor has this total "pure and innocent" image since lyrically she's often been quite full on since the beginning.

if thats her being 'full on', its still somewhat 'cutesy'. 'lol! shes going to tell her friends hes gay'. the actress/mattress line is malicious (quite good too actually), and a good line for anyone writing about slut shaming in pop (or whatever), but its still language couched in a language, idiom and situation (you can get away with most things writing as part of a 'he/she done me wrong' narrative, esp from the POV of a teenage girl) that people are far more comfortable with. but basically, shes white, blonde, thin, pretty, with a somewhat imperious demeanour. not THAT surprising that shes been hailed as 'pure' or even in some cases, an aryan goddess.

ofc she was already famous, but not quite global pop megastar famous, not at that point.

Our Amber had already seen her live, over here in the UK. (Justin Bieber was support).

She won the Grammy about 2 years later or thereabouts.

Had Kanye not interrupted, she would still be that global megastar.

...i'm sure ppl have shit talked me to their friends, which i guess is all that taylor is advocating.

― Treeship, Tuesday, July 19, 2016 6:04 PM (Yesterday)

strikes me more as tongue-in-cheek lolz than "advocating" anything

Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:39 (eight years ago) link

well yes. but its like saying kim kardashian would prob still be famous without doing a sex tape. she probably would. but was it an invaluable part of that fame? ubdoubtedly. taylor wasnt selling what she now does in the UK prior to 1989.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:41 (eight years ago) link

to clarify, i dont mean kanye helped make her who she is post-1989, she was going to become who she was anyway, im just saying that the imaletyoufinish incident was good for her. its indisputable.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:43 (eight years ago) link

its quite a fabulously profitable beef for all involved in any case. kim gets more followers, kanye gets to... im not sure what he gets at this point, other than managing to look like a devious provocateur, and taylor gets to act like a woman done wronged, which is her favourite mode, from the looks of things. cant wait to hear the songs about tom hiddleston when they break up.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 11:48 (eight years ago) link

It was the VMAs that Kanye interrupted her at.

That Vulture piece seems off to me:

While her other white peers, after coming of age, represented themselves as less naïve and more sexual, Swift has persisted in playing her original part, that of the wide-eyed underdog ingénue fighting against the indignities visited upon her by dishonest men. .... Whatever the realities of her actual existence, in her art and publicity she remains the same romantic, asexual, self-evidently virtuous figure that she had put forward in her first, self-titled album in 2006 (an album which, it should be said, is very good).

The whole point of "Blank Space" as both song and video is basically exploding the trappings of the wide-eyed ingenue. And "asexual"? Granted she's no Nikki, but there's an awful lot of sex in the last couple records especially.

A nationally known air show announcer/personality (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 13:46 (eight years ago) link

an awful lot of clichés in that passage too ("wide-eyed"? "underdog"?).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 13:49 (eight years ago) link

No one knew who George W Bush was until Kanye called him out either

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 13:58 (eight years ago) link

"asexual" is a totally weird complaint. why should she be any more "sexual" than she is comfortable being? that's sort of what i was talking about earlier with the fact that there is something gross about the glee i am seeing in some corners at a "stuck up" "mean girl" being "exposed."

Treeship, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 14:02 (eight years ago) link

i thought the vulture piece was good in the last few paragraphs, but the things i didnt quite get were the insinuation that her not allying herself with rap and R&B is a dubious move (why? it might be that she thinks shes above those genres, yes, but might also just be that shes avoiding them to set herself apart, and also tie into broader nostalgia in music), and that kanye and kim have somehow exposed some great flaw in her/her music, when i dont think any of her fans really want her, or expect her to really turn her persona on its head. i cant imagine that they think it has run its course.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 20 July 2016 14:11 (eight years ago) link

They need to settle this with a rap-off.

The singer, who won the album of the year Grammy last year for her first official pop album "1989," said the pre-Super Bowl show would likely be her only one this year.

"As far as I know I'm only doing one show in 2017, and as far as I know, this is that show," she said. "You are attending 100 percent of my tour dates."

one year passes...

"New Romantics" was playing in Rite-Aid and I looked it up; thought it may be a candidate for "Obscure singles heard in CVS," as I only know it as a Deluxe Edition bonus track. Was surprised to learn it was actually released as 1989's seventh and final single – 16 months after the album came out(!) – and did fairly well on some charts (although it barely broke the Top 50 on the Hot 100).

Anyways, as I'm sure all have heard, this comes out in a few months:

I think the 1989 songs sound like sh*t, but the Vault tracks are really strong this time around.

Girl (1956) (morrisp), Friday, 27 October 2023 05:19 (eleven months ago) link

wow, damn, this last one especially... 100% legit

Girl (1956) (morrisp), Friday, 27 October 2023 05:24 (eleven months ago) link

This sounds noticeably worse than the previous rerecordings. Weird echo or something in the vocals that wasn’t there before, unless it’s the Spotify quality affecting it.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 27 October 2023 09:05 (eleven months ago) link

She removed the “Hey!’s from Blank Space

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 27 October 2023 09:12 (eleven months ago) link

i listened to a bit of this and whenever i thought a detail sounded weird i went back and compared and it was always pretty much spot-on. i think these re-recordings just encourage listening with a weird focus on details that can catch you out if you haven't done that before

these vault tracks are better than at least a third of the album and really paint a picture of how this album could have been so much better. it's quite different from previous vault tracks which were re-arranged to the point of not really having the possibility of fitting with their parent albums

ufo, Friday, 27 October 2023 12:04 (eleven months ago) link

The indexing is fucked up – I Know Places starts in the middle of the song and includes the intro to Clean.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 27 October 2023 12:34 (eleven months ago) link

i'm two tracks in, the compression and weird gating on blank space is so fatiguing...

maelin, Friday, 27 October 2023 13:19 (eleven months ago) link

the fuck? there's loads of weird high frequency information on this... i'm listening lossless. your ear latches onto it and it really throws the low end off. the drums have lost all their pizzazz on shake it off...

maelin, Friday, 27 October 2023 13:22 (eleven months ago) link

It does seem noticeably different on the Max Martin songs, like they couldn’t duplicate the sound or we’re trying for what she does in concert

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 27 October 2023 13:40 (eleven months ago) link

It seems like if it was easy to replicate whatever it is these big-name producers do in the studio, then everyone would be doing it.

I haven't looked, but just curious, who *is* credited as producer(s) on all these new versions?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 27 October 2023 13:52 (eleven months ago) link

I think Shellback is involved with most of them

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 27 October 2023 13:54 (eleven months ago) link

I mean on some of the Max Martin songs. Christopher Rowe is the main producer.

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 27 October 2023 13:57 (eleven months ago) link

Shellback’s on just one track, it looks like. It’s mostly this guy, this guy, Antonoff on a few tracks (including most the vault tracks), Imogen Heap on “Clean”…
