i was mostly trying to deflate john's attempt to paint ethan as the biggest closeted gay basher since roy cohn

yeah that's exactly what I said

do what you gotta do to make it cool to fagbash I guess!

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:45 (seventeen years ago) link

what I said before you rewrote it:

I would say a dude who's publicly tonguing a dude has a bit more leeway to use "fag" as he sees fit, but that'd probably just be more of that tired old save-a-ho stone-faced moralizing

seems sane & fair but ymmv

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:47 (seventeen years ago) link

HE WASNT ACTUALLY TONGUING HIM

You can't pretend that dude loves teh gays in his rhymes: in his work homosexuality is universally negative and emasculating. Regardless of a dude's behavior (REAL OR IMAGINED, as per above), the way he uses homosexuality in his music is inexcusable.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:51 (seventeen years ago) link

instead of me clowning a dude who drops fag in freestyles while tonguing the creepy old dude who owns his label

wasn't my line man! which is exactly what I'm trying to point out: a bunch of straight cats feel perfectly cool busting out the homophobic fuckin' garbage any old time ('cause who cares, right: which I think is bullshit, especially coming from people who make a great show of caring about social justice from time to time)

xpost yeah as I say: the word carries different weight, abusive or otherwise, depending on where it's coming from - this isn't exactly news

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 20 November 2006 22:56 (seventeen years ago) link

...you're right about this obviously, my sole point is that ethan's "stuntin' like my boyfriend" attempt at a joke is sad fratboy homophobe garbage which I'd expect him to be considerably above

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 20 November 2006 23:05 (seventeen years ago) link

john what the fuck do you think joking that waynes single is called 'stuntin like my boyfriend' is like a matthew shephard level hate crime?????? im not actually boycotting dude or whatever, or saying the song is wack cuz OMG I HATE TEH GAYS

anticon jemima (ooo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 01:52 (seventeen years ago) link

and if you think jokes about unintentional (???) homoeroticism are solely the domain of fratboy homophobes you got another think/g coming

anticon jemima (ooo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 01:53 (seventeen years ago) link

a tepid, tepid otm.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 01:55 (seventeen years ago) link

at your next show you should start making out with some dude on stage & if anybody laughs kick them out

anticon jemima (ooo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 01:55 (seventeen years ago) link

This is like that one radio show where Hov flipped out and everybody freaked cuz the ice cold hustler was mad.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 01:57 (seventeen years ago) link

except I didn't flip out & I'm not in charge of shit, I just called bullshit on something I thought was fucking bullshit

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 13:58 (seventeen years ago) link

uhhhh TT I don't think you were the "ice cold hustler" he was referring to.

but at least this thread isn't as bad as the time you tried to argue that any negative opinion Stephin Merritt has of hip hop is completely explained/justified by the fact that many rappers are homophobic, despite the fact that SM never once brought that up as an issue

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 14:23 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think that fighting homophobia in hip hop is a noble (if perhaps quixotic) hobbyhorse to take up, but sometimes you seem to use it in a very rock-paper-scissors way to trump people -- i'll see your racism and raise you a fagbashing!

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 14:37 (seventeen years ago) link

hahha actually this is better than that time cuz for this he seems to be using basically the same argument but with lil wayne in place of stephen merritt

anticon jemima (ooo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Lil Wayne is pretty short, do you think he's ever been to Runt?

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:07 (seventeen years ago) link

ya'll win as usual - there's only one kind of discrimination worth caring about!

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought that was your thesis.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I gotta get a cheat-sheet or something reminding me - racism bad, homophobia/misogyny/all else a-ok

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:12 (seventeen years ago) link

again, plz explain homophobia inherent in 'stuntin like my boyfriend'??? i mean, aside from the noted fact that gay dudes hate to speculate or joke about the sexuality of entertainers

anticon jemima (ooo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

especially entertainers with a streak of homophobia, who would be made uncomfortable by such jokes or speculations

anticon jemima (ooo), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:15 (seventeen years ago) link

uh, sure, that was my point. anyway, if you need a cheat-sheet for anything, it's all the gay-themed variations on the title of "stuntin' like my daddy," of which "stuntin' like my boyfriend" is probably the most benign, especially if you believe (which you seem to) that lil wayne is out'n'proud (xpost)

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

give him a break al theres always some ambiguities to figure out in the first couple months you know someone

"stuntin' like my life partner"

am0n (am0n), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, Alex, my sole point was "hey Ethan: that's homophobic garbage, yr 'stuntin' like my boyfriend' riff," to which Ethan responded with "I'm just clowning a guy who tongues a dude while using homophobic language himself" which was weak sauce - sure Eth, you were exposing Wayne's homophobia, that's what that was about. I know I look crazy to you guys, I'm just genuinely mystified by your (and Jess's, and Ethan's) continual "aww, c'mon" stance about any non-racial discrimination - which is what Ethan's comment was, however much you wanna bang at me about whatever else. Whether Wayne's gay or a virulent homophobe doesn't really enter into the equation much; I took umbrage at Ethan running off a homophobic comment, and at knowing that nobody really gives a shit, since all of us (I'm included in the "us" here) who listen to rap have sort of agreed to just give a pass to homophobia and misogyny while remaining highly alert to racism. I can't figure out what that's about, maybe it's a blind spot for me. NB Alex I do note that you say "it's a noble if quixotic cause" but I'm not even "fighting homophobia in hip-hop," that's a lost cause: I'm just taking offense at homophobic comments on ILX & at rather tortured defenses of same

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:30 (seventeen years ago) link

except that was like the 5th reference to wayne/birdman being gay in this thread. (is Jess really culpable in this? I don't think of him as being as cavalier about this kind of thing as, say, me or Ethan, although he did participate in the joking a little upthread)
