In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the first single: "I was going to make up some profound statement in the chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that fitted. Then I just thought "All my people right here, right now, d'you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah." Very vague, very ambiguous, that'll do. Look in the mirror and wink while you're singing it and it's quite saucy. And I fucking love that line, 'Coming in a mess, going out in style'. We were a bunch of scruffs from Manchester and we're going out in a Rolls Royce."

Oasis as a band would be incomplete without "D'You Know What I Mean?" We might not notice its absence but their whole narrative would be different I think. It's the best version of the total steamrolling excess of Be Here Now, strong enough on pure swagger and massiveness that it sort of reshapes what's around it a little. Not enough to make it a great album but enough that I kept coming back and trying to like the rest more, like this is the mission statement and the rest was the failed attempt to carry out the mission.

Noel said of the song: "If 'The Shock of the Lightning' sounds instant and compelling to you, it's because it was written dead fast. And recorded dead fast. 'The Shock of the Lightning' basically is the demo. And it has retained its energy. And there's a lot to be said for that, I think. The first time you record something is always the best". It was described by NME as "a massively improved version of 'It's Gettin' Better (Man!!)'" and featuring "love is a litany/a magical mystery" as the song's chorus.

This song is about a girl that as time passes, the singer doesn't really care about anymore. Noel Gallagher explained to Select magazine: "The lyrics are just saying, 'Well, it's not about, be the same for us anymore, I suppose.'""It was written just towards the end of the Definitely Maybe sessions," he added. If Definitely Maybe was about dreaming about being in a band, this one is actually about being in a band. So it's like,'Hello, it's good to be back' - back making records."

The single artwork features a photograph of the band on the beach at Weston-super-Mare. Many potential locations were examined along the Somerset and Avon coastline (Oasis were playing Glastonbury that weekend, so a beach within striking distance of the festival site had to be found). In the background is the Grand Pier which burnt down in July 2008. This has made the original vinyl artwork (particularly the 12" single) highly collectible.
Oasis had been following in the footsteps of their idols The Beatles, who were photographed on the beach wearing Victorian bathing costumes in 1963

this cover art has reminded me of this:
"Roll with It" received a great deal of attention when Food Records, the label of Britpop rivals Blur, moved the original release date of the single "Country House" to clash with it, sparking what came to be known as "The Battle of Britpop". The British media had already reported an intense rivalry between the two bands and this clash of releases was seen as a battle for the number one spot. The media sensation was spurred on by verbal attacks from the respective camps (in particular Noel and Liam Gallagher, Damon Albarn and Alex James), that extended beyond the music industry to the point where the two bands were regularly mentioned on the evening news. In particular, public imagination was sparked by the contrast between the gritty, working class Oasis and the artsy, middle class Blur. In the end, Blur's "Country House" single sold 274,000 copies to Oasis' 216,000 copies of "Roll with It". The singles charted at number 1 and number 2 respectively.

thinking a bit about Blur vs. Oasis today. Blur doesn't have a Definitely Maybe but Modern Life Is Rubbish is better than (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. Oasis had better B-Sides but blur had the better albums. blur was the better band but Oasis might have had higher peaks?

oasis has two classic albums (the first two) and a plethora of garbageblur has one classic album (the self titled), two almost-classic albums (parklife and 13) and a bunch of great singles/album tracks
