oasis has two classic albums (the first two) and a plethora of garbage
blur has one classic album (the self titled), two almost-classic albums (parklife and 13) and a bunch of great singles/album tracks

oasis provides way more comedy value though so they win

It doesn't matter what you think now, it mattered what you thought then

I hated Blur, thought Albarn was a complete prick, was vindicated, still vote Oasis (despite Liam etc)

I liked both Blur and Oasis at the time, as well as many other bands. Many people liked both. I think the only people who care about the whole Blur vs. Oasis thing in 2016 are people who weren't there at the time that are under the impression that it was something important. The reality of it is that it was all forgotten about within a few months and it only reappeared as part of the narrative arc in a crap John Harris book. It certainly didn't harm anyone's career.

It's the same with this term "Britpop", which was nothing more than a media term to lump together a whole bunch of bands that didn't sound alike but happened to be from Britain. Over the last couple of years I've seen arguments and debates over what was or what wasn't Britpop and it's like "who gives a fuck?" ... nobody gave a fuck about it even at the time, aside from those in the media! Not once in the mid '90s did I ever hear any fucker say "Yeah, mate, fuckin' love Britpop, me" ... it was always "I really like (X band)" or "Yeah, love that song by (Y band)" ... or, "I like guitar music, none of this manufactured crap"

I was expecting 'Half The World Away' to place a lot higher, even though it's not a track that I would have voted for. It's one of their most popular and most well-known B-sides. Probably more well-known than even 'Acquiesce' or 'The Masterplan'

"Cigarettes & Alcohol" was the first single to demonstrate the rougher musical attitude that Oasis appeared to be promoting. The song proclaims the inherent appeal of cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs as a remedy to the banality and seemingly futile nature of the working class life. Lyrics such as "Is it worth the aggravation to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for?" taps into the common sentiment of western disenchantment that was particularly common in the mid-1990s.

Upon first hearing the song, the man who discovered the band, Alan McGee, claimed that the song was one of the greatest social statements anyone had made in the past 25 years.

"Talk Tonight" is one of many acoustic B-side tracks sung by Noel, and was at the time, the most vulnerable song he had ever attempted. It was inspired by the near-breakup of the band in Los Angeles in autumn 1994, when Noel walked out without telling anyone and headed for San Francisco. He stayed with a girl he had befriended during a previous show there. According to the sleeve notes to The Masterplan, she talked a distraught Noel "off the ledge" and took him to the park where she played as a child. It is also mentioned in the Oasis book by Paul Mathurs, Take Me There, that his friend also had an obsession with Snapple Strawberry Lemonade, which contributed to the line in the song, "all your dreams are made of strawberry lemonade."

The one where they were all on crystal meth, they kept having to restart songs and Liam changed the words to 'Live Forever' to "maybe I don't really wanna know/why you pick your nose"?

Noel Gallagher explained that song's meaning to Melody Maker: "It's basically about people who think they're the voice of a generation, or the figurehead of a movement. It's just saying, 'Why are you lot down here looking up at him?' This band is about the music; it's about the songs. It's not about us."

"I wouldn't ever make a political speech, and I'd sack anyone in a band who started doing that," Gallagher continued. "We are overtly political once every five years, when we all go out and vote Labour. But then we turn around and go back to being a band again.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:04 (seven years ago) link

i think he changed his mind from the early days. if i remember reading correctly Noel actually did get pretty political later on in the bands life?

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

Gallagher claims that he was drunk while writing the song.[citation needed] According to him, parts of the song were inspired by walking while listening to a Walkman ("walking to the sound of my favourite tune") and using cocaine ("all your dreams are made / when you're chained to the mirror and the razor blade"), . It has been suggested that the song is about drug addiction in general ("need a little time to wake up/need a little time to rest your mind/you know you should so I guess you might as well").

The line "tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon" seems to reference The Beatles' song "Tomorrow Never Knows", though Gallagher claims to have completely forgotten why he felt it was relevant to the song. Over the years, the song was regular on their live performance set.

Towards the end of "Morning Glory", a woman can be heard singing "without a lover to call your own". This is a snippet from a Soul II Soul track called "Love Enuff", which bleeds into track 11 on the Morning Glory album and was a hit in July 1995. Its unclear whether its inclusion is deliberate or not. The song's guitar riff closely resembles "The One I Love" by R.E.M.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Noel Gallagher has regularly declared "The Masterplan" as one of the best songs he has ever written. However, he regrets the fact that it was first released as a mere B-side, admitting he was "young and stupid", when he made that decision. He also claims that Creation Records boss, Alan McGee, upon hearing the song, told Noel it was "too good" to be a B-side. Noel reportedly replied, "Well, I don't write shit songs!"
