brimstead - two of my choices were straightfire albums I've loved since my teens (Boo Radleys and Autechre). Pere Ubu album is something I've owned for a long time but only come round to realising was one of my favourites in the last couple of years.

I could have mentioned any Scott Walker album because his effect on me in the last 3 or 4 years has been profound and I've taken his work in as a single body really. The outlier, of course, is the Young Thug album which only came out a few weeks ago but I've been rinsing to death.
Voice of the Seven Woods (Twisted Nerve)Wizzard Brew (Harvest)Os Mutantes (Omplatten)Beaucoup Fish (JBO)Marquee Moon (Elektra)
There you go.

Veedon Fleece has had more mentions than Astral Weeks! A changing of the guard?
Veedon Fleece crossed my mind as one to list. I love Astral Weeks too but VF always felt more personal to me.

Figured another Lilys mention would have shown up eventually. Glad The Clientele got plenty of love!

Blue Nile are one of several good bands my mother played a lot since I was very young but they were the last one that really clicked. I was kind of astonished when it stopped being dull and it started sounding rich and gorgeous.

Cor, that Nuno Cannavaro album is the business.
In A Silent Way must have been mentioned at least three times now? Remain in Light, too.

RYM is a great way for aspies like me to catalogue, discover and collect thoughts about music, but it's not for the casual listener sure
― imago, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 19:59 (seven years ago) link
would turrican be more pleased if none of these albums were on the rateyourmusic.com all-time top 5000 or would it be even worse?
― brimstead, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:02 (seven years ago) link
bah why did i post that
imago i agree, forest for the trees etc... or maybe it's trees for the forest in this case (the effects of aggregation make for arguably bland results there)

Pavement - Wowee ZoweeThe Clash - Sandinista!Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time OutDe La Soul - De La Soul is DeadR.E.M. - Dead Letter Office
This thread is great but this exercise is hard af. Kills me I can't fit any Al Green/Fugazi/Unwound on there, or much rap or newer stuff. But I tend to love long, messy albums that you can explore forever, and each of these LPs introduced me to huge worlds of music so they'll always hold a special place
― Evan R, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link
I like RYM, I like reading some users reviews and I find out about records by looking through others users whose taste I know. I also make list on the site.
― JacobSanders, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link
Two albums I'd consider if bonus editions count: VU's Loaded (Fully Loaded Edition) and that 50-track version of Elvis Costello's Get Happy!!. Those are such insanely generous collections of music, and good examples of albums that are somehow even better when they're longer and messier
― Evan R, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link
Oh yeah.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link
RYM consensus is often fairly dull, much like ILM consensus, but the trick is learning how to apply your own filters
― imago, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link
heavy users of rym are mostly prog metal junkies ime
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link
sorry, i didn't mean to call the website "stupid", i just think it's stupid to treat it as some monolithic thing with its own 'taste'
― brimstead, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:15 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, the best way to get the most out of RYM is to make use of the filters. I've made some surprising discoveries that way. Otherwise, the charts just look like this thread.
― pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link
Prog metal fans are very easily categorisable as stupid, and I say that as a fan of prog and metal
― imago, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, there's a lot of prog/metal/prog metal "genre experts" on RYM, it's true... but they're not the only genres that RYM is useful for getting deep into.
