I don't see how it does. Think most here have five completely different fave albums on any given day.

Jorge Ben - Fôrça bruta
Depeche Mode - Violator
Fela Kuti - Beasts of no Nation

Nabozo, Thursday, 13 October 2016 13:52 (seven years ago) link

xp it's my least favourite record of theirs, but it's nice to see Aereogramme get a nod on here. Sleep and Release was one of my favourite albums for a long time, and would probably make into a personal top ten depending on how nostalgic I'm feeling.

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 13 October 2016 13:57 (seven years ago) link

as a tender young CIF, Palomine and Love Tara were top favorites of mine as well

I admit I never grew up.

re: Aereogramme, I could never really get into their older albums. The last one is the one where everything finally clicked. Just brilliant, beautiful, gorgeous music.

DJ Kicks - Playgroup
Spiderland - Slint
Technique - New Order
Vol. 4 - Black Sabbath
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) - Wu-Tang Clan

Neil S, Thursday, 13 October 2016 15:24 (seven years ago) link

a thing abt listmaking for me is that I can never really visualize or remember all my favorite albums at once, but I want to, since they make up a big part of who I understand myself to be, so making lists is kind of an attempt to grasp my own musical taste, and watching other peoples improvised lists in this thread reminds me of a lot of those non-cannon gems that are also in my top tier and that I really want to remember

Renaissance - Scheherazade
Chapterhouse - Whirlpool
Diamanda Galas - Divine Punishment
Peter Hammill - Chameleon In The Shadow Of The Night
Melt Banana - Cell Scape

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:10 (seven years ago) link

Renaissance are such a good band. I might go with Live at Carnegie Hall as my pick.

jmm, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link

Yeeeah, Cell Scape

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

I think that the later Melt Banana albums might be more solid but it really comes down to Cell Scape having such an exciting sequence at the start.

Art Tatum & Ben Webster - Art Tatum meets Ben Webster
Coleman Hawkins & Ben Webster - Coleman Hawkins encounters Ben Webster
Gerry Mulligan & Ben Webster - Gerry Mulligan meets Ben Webster
Ben Webster & Oscar Peterson - Ben Webster meets Oscar Peterson
Ben Webster & Johnny Hodges - The Complete 1960 jazz Cellar Session

i much prefer "The Brute" as a collaborator rather than a leader, he has such a godlike natural style he doesn't need to burdened with anything else imo

calzino, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link

Cell Scape rules

sleeve, Thursday, 13 October 2016 19:58 (seven years ago) link

Renaissance's first line up are also pretty decent.
They were initially a Yardbirds spin off but I don't think any of that line up lasted into the better known one from the 70s.
Keith Relf and his sister started looking into blending stuff together with classical and folk influences alongside Jim Mcarty the Yardbirds drummer.

I have a Sanctuary compilation 2cd that has some nice stuff on it.
