you are right about the production. I think I could write a whole book about it, had I a flair for language. But, allow me to highlight (these are a couple PRODUCTION highlights [as Jim said]; I take the technical musical performances of Mick, John, Christine and Lindsey as read):
- the backing vocals. It's like some kind of psychedelic doo-wop!! Seriously, those voices that start low in the mix, and come in and go "Come .. on .. and" "Hold me!" Wow.
Like, Lindsey is all like, yeah, I've got your doo-wop right here! How do you like THESE backing vocals?
- but, the ultimate point in the song, both song-writing and production-wise, is the breakdown that occurs at about the 2:30 mark, after Linsey's brilliant solo ends .. a total breakdown, with nothing but Christine's pristine piano and Lindsey beautiful acoustic guitar. WOW!!!!!!!
(actually, an even better thing about the pure PRODUCTION of this cut, is the way that acoustic guitar sort of creeps into the mix at about the 2:00 mark --- just listen to that acoustic guitar start strumming those chords behind Lindsey's solo ... and seconds later, there comes that great breakdown with the piano/acoustic-guitar bliss)
and then of course Lindsey's great finger-picking outro solo .. and boo-yah
best band ever

Played "Trouble" from Lindsey's solo Law and Order a few weeks back and it sounded damn good....
Once was going through donations for the Record Fair and had SO many copies of Tusk I actually made a Box of Tusk! 3 bucks a pop and they all went too, so, there ya go.

I did enjoy that "Classic Albums" look at "Rumours". In fact, I've got this elaborate theory that rock 'n roll record production was at its creative zenith back aroound '76-79, until the digital age came along and spoiled everything. I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about though....

I have Bare Trees but haven't listened in a while. I remember liking it though; very mellow record. My local classic rock radio station actually played a track off it last weekend! I was randomly scanning the dial and checked them out for a bit -- they were in the midst of a "deep cuts" weekend.
Haven't heard the rest, but Mystery to Me has the totally awesome single "Hypnotized" -- definitely seek out that song if you haven't heard it, just beautiful. written by Bob Welch. And also further proof that Mick Fleetwood was a great drummer!!

i agree, but not *that* much shorter. there's really only two or three songs i would have jettisoned..

Pre-Buckingham-Nicks Fleetwood Mac: S/D
― Mitya (mitya), Friday, 17 March 2006 04:59 (eighteen years ago) link
It's a shame that the revival never took off, as I might have gotten Future Games earlier.
It's really crazy...every time I think I've heard everything worth hearing by Fleetwood Mac, it turns out that I overlooked something. Anyway, Future Games: their prog rock, Pink Floyd-y album. Long songs, heavy Kirwan influence. I kind of wish they'd had another album or two in this vein (bits of Bare Trees fit that description, but only bits). Still trying to decide whether I prefer the title track, Woman of 1000 Years or Sands of Time.
I'm kind of sad that it looks (at least now) like the Fleetwood Mac reissue program is over. I'd kill to have Then Play On, Kiln House, Bare Trees, Future Games, and Mystery To Me remastered w/bonus tracks. (Also the sound of my Future Games CD is a little muddy...wonder if that's how the vinyl was or if remastering would help. On the other hand, the muddy sound does add to the spacy vibe, so maybe it's not all bad.)
As far as the question of Pre Buckingham-Nicks S/D, the answer as far as I can tell is that pretty much everything is essential. Haven't found an album yet that I don't like, and am now working on live stuff, boots, etc. Maybe the Live In Chicago isn't so hot, but I haven't heard that since I was like 12.

I wish LB had done more outside producing
I wonder how much money you'd have to throw at him to get him to produce an album

Sheryl Crow? Yuck.
I have Future Games on vinyl and yes I recall it having a muddy sound.
― Bimble, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 01:22 (sixteen years ago) link
John, you were born too late. Had you been hanging around John Stewart in the late seventies, you could even have gotten Stevie to sing harmonies!
(however, how the fuck Dream Academy got him to produce and play on a track will remain a mystery. Anyone got stories?)
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link
i don't reckon he'd be that expensive - it doesn't seem like he's ever been in demand (or is he just not a gun for hire?)
― electricsound, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 01:24 (sixteen years ago) link
Buckingham seems like the kind of guy who, after hearing your demos, would mumble, "Mm, yeah, great, lemme think about it," then not return your phone calls for months. Meanwhile, he's adding eight million guitar overdubs and crazy harmonies.
― Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 01:26 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah I think the deal with Buckingham as producer would be you'd have to cede total control to him. not all producers are like that and most artists can't handle it because they have been raised to think that The Artist must have The Vision etc
maybe I should call Lindsay up though and see if he's got some time in June

you've heard the drogonfly single, right? recorded right after welch joined i think. so spacey. the welch/kirwan lineup is my favorite

Linsey Buckingham is label-less? That's outrageous, unless it's by choice. Was it?
