i'm mostly interested in lil peep as a sex symbol but some of his music is pretty cool
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 November 2016 19:33 (seven years ago) link
hellboy tape leans a little acoustic guitar for me. it sounds to me like what post malone thinks he is, like dirty skeezed out druggie post-keef teen zeitgest music except post malone is a rich kid playing dress up. (i guess i can't pretend to know peep's background so maybe more to the point is that he sells the persona better regardless.)
some of the pre-hellboy stuff on youtube that is a little more grounded in rap production sounded a bit more right to my ears

dunno where you get "grunge," that stuff was all about chromatic harmonies iirc, which you won't find here

― based grandpa (noz), Sunday, 6 November 2016 21:03 (seven years ago) link
one of the main things that set grunge apart was it leaned toward modes it was imo copping from old zeppelin records but whether that's the case or not, their dudes tended to favor scales & harmonies outside the trad hard rock blues & minor blues that had informed most-but-not-all of the heavy music prior to grunge. melodies and harmonies go hand in hand, the modes yr favoring are gonna suggest sympathetic harmonies. alice in chains to me is the classic example of the "grunge harmony" but nirvana, stp, soundgarden lean hard on phrygian & aeolian modes and their vocal harmonies reflect that in a way that's super-important to how the genre sounds imo.
"the way I see things," the track I mentioned as sounding like best coast, does not sound like any of that, but does sound like best coast.
― though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Sunday, 6 November 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link
I hear the best coast comparison in the ~atmospheric gauzy production sound don't get me wrong but that feels like an incidental product of the scene he's coming out of
He's different than bones because he's singing & has a more interesting sense for melody and is not rapping in the 3000th iteration of lord infamous flows. His music is also just a lot less dry--more (melo)dramatic, romantic
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2016 22:16 (seven years ago) link
Also yes I understand that grunge relied on different melodic tools and I'm arguing to you that this is something Lil Peep is also coming to, almost seemingly by accident. Most of the songs on hellboy remind me more immediately of Alice In Chains melodically than any recent indie
And I'm speaking of his vocal melodies here not the instrumentation per se tho I do think there are some beats which could fit this aesthetically
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Sunday, 6 November 2016 22:22 (seven years ago) link
well, I give any musician full credit for arriving at whatever musical destination he/she arrives at, so I think this guy gets to be credited with making something new out of the stuff that informs his own work, we just differ on what that stuff is. I just hear very very little of what you're ref'ing and a lot more 'verbed guitar/millennial "whoop" you'll forgive me/anthemic indie than I do the aggressively 'we are not blues-based or major key' gestures of the grunge bros. this guy sounds like the mainstream lil b to me. you probably hate lil b, I'm agnostic I just like to think about rap and casually keep track of what's going on, but his whole vibe, based on what I've checked out since this morning, feels very mainstream indie to me.
just based on my own experiences, I think a lot of rap dudes listen to a lot more indie rock than people generally suspect (cf. "the recipe")

― though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 7 November 2016 00:05 (seven years ago) link
How have I been shown my claims don't work? Saying he uses melodies that remind me mainly of 90s grunge hasn't been "disproven" because you said you listened to one song and thought it reminded you of beach house.
Dropping a bunch of musical terms that btw I am actually familiar with--I studied jazz and am very familiar w the Dorian and phyrgian modes & what they mean harmonically is not some decisive death blow to an argument about an artist you've given a cursory skim. I haven't addressed your specific claims mainly bc you kept talking about "harmonies" when I was talking about a vocalist's *melodic* sensibilities? One who doesn't often harmonize
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 November 2016 00:43 (seven years ago) link
Being that he is basing his music around loops like most rap artists of course the songs don't have the underlying harmonic structure of grunge but then that was never a claim I made

Saying he uses melodies that remind me mainly of 90s grunge
in what way do they remind you of 90s grunge? This should be easy, as 90s grunge had several really distinctive musical qualities that set it apart from the hard rock of the day. I don't hear any of these in the stuff you linked; I do hear, and showed you in easy to understand terms, Beach House and mainstream indie. you don't like the idea of boosting something that reminds you of stuff you'd rather not be culturally aligned with, so you say it doesn't sound like that stuff, but it kinda does. sorry! a lot of the metal I like reminds me of Paganini, even though I do not like Paganini. Those are the breaks!
attempting to argue this on a legit musical basis w/deej w/o ad-homs tho obv we all know how that'll end but w/e
― though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 7 November 2016 01:26 (seven years ago) link
(also for the record actually discussing what's going on is not "dropping musical terms." I know you can't help but think of actual musical discussion that way, but that's on you, not on people who like to talk about music.)

The melodies
He uses
Are often not blues-based
Sounds to me like he does make frequent use chromatic intervals but I haven't rigorously reviewed his work from a musicological perspective so I'm not going to lean on a musicological argument--besides, you asking me to do so is clearly a trap along the lines of when ppl thought I was trying to say keef was being "complex" and therefore good by taking an unorthodox rhythmic approach
All I can say is that the melodic choices he makes remind me of the gloomy depressed trapped feel of stuff like Alice In Chains & similar 90s grunge stars that later went on to influence stuff like staind and puddle of mudd or what have you.
I do think it's funny that an indie rock artist is trying to convince me of the vast influence of indie in the year of our lord 2016 when about 8 people still listen or talk about indie rock
And while I'm not as familiar with his influences in this area, I do know he's sampled multiple emo records, which suggests to me his influences are probably more along those lines than traditional indie as such
How in all these threads where three people (inevitably one of them is always Joan Crawford of the band best coast) pile on me abt the music I like in their most condescending shitthead tones always throw up their hands and accuse me of ad hominem attacks part way through

This isn't abt "cultural positioning" I just think you don't actually get what this is or where it's influences are coming from, you think this sounds like "indie" and I think indie rock is probably the ninth most popular form of music having an influence on a nineteen year old kid listening to popular music in 2016 & while there might be some textural or surface level commonalities w the genre it's really not a primary touchpoint for this nor does it really reflect his sensibility or approach--this is very sincere music & he writes lyrical w a brush that feels much more like rap meets emo than something intended to appeal to ppl reading gorilla vs bear or whatever. I do agree to some extent about the blink 182 thing
