I dislike Kate Tempest but attempting to sell her as hip-hop is pretty dumb. I know Imago has been trying to make this pile-on happen for about two years though so let him have his fun.
38. Slaves – 'Take Control'37. Soft Hair – 'Soft Hair'36. Swet Shop Boys – 'Cashmere'35. Glass Animals – 'How To Be A Human Being'34. Let’s Eat Grandma – 'I, Gemini'
I haven't heard a single note of any of these but this is probably the worst run of band and album names I've ever seen.

The brass neck of all that Skepta score inflation as well.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 24 November 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link
The music isn't very good either. Let's Eat Grandma did one fantastic song a few years ago when they were 13 but the album (including a rerecording of that song) is mostly just annoying

Drake is in the list, higher than Kate Tempest, lower than Jamie T.

Again no Kaiser Chiefs. Starting to wonder if people have, like myself, not even heard the album.

Bloc Party...decent.
What u smokin?
Okay yeah, Hymns kind of sucks, though I still have fondness for the band. But regarding worse tastes than FOPP, exhibit A - NME!
Vanishing Twin is a nice chill listen. I'd recommend Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation - Mirage too.
― Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 24 November 2016 22:34 (seven years ago) link
FOPP list is fine for the most part, just a bit conservative and some token indie choices which probably shouldn't be there, that's par for the course surely.
On the other hand I just checked out Khemmis and was not at all impressed.
Not heard the new Kate Tempest but couple of tracks from her first one were good, dunno why single her out when there's a world of landfill indie out there, and apparently prog-hair-metal too

interesting NME omissions; PJ Harvey, James Blake, Warpaint, Last Shadow Puppets.
this seems to be the year people get off the James Blake bus.
― piscesx, Friday, 25 November 2016 01:43 (seven years ago) link
That must be the first time they haven't found room for an album involving Alex Turner on their list.

I've still not listened to the PJ Harvey album and it's almost December. I guess I should.

4) Marillion - Fuck Everyone And Run (F E A R)
wait, what
― soref, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:17 (seven years ago) link
judging by their wiki page Marillion have some fairly touchy fans
In 1999, DJ Simon Mayo commented on BBC Radio 1: "Marillion ... where are they now? And who cares anyway?" Fans objecting to the comment brought the station's computer system to a standstill with thousands of emails of complaint. Mayo subsequently apologised for his comment to keyboard player Mark Kelly when he phoned the show to take part in a quiz.[74]To accompany the release of Anoraknophobia in 2001, the band issued a press release asking critics to review the album in "a manner that is both accurate and fair. So, our challenge to you is to firstly listen to the album. Then write a review without using any of the following words: "Progressive rock", "Genesis", "Fish", "heavy metal", "dinosaurs", "predictable", "concept album". Because if you do, we'll know that you haven't listened to it."[74]

Rachel Cooke, a writer for The Observer and New Statesman, has repeatedly referred negatively to the band and insulted their fans in her articles.[76][77][78][79]
can't believe that Marillion have been continuing without Fish for nearly 30 years now
― soref, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:22 (seven years ago) link
Marillion have huge fan funding support too, it's kind of amazing. I saw Heart an an outdoor concert this summer and Ann's voice is in great shape. Haven't been inspired to hear their new one though. Deap Vally is kind of fun. Pretenders was produced by Black Keys dude but you wouldn't know from hearing it. Cheap Trick album is not good. I love the Purson and Blues Pills, hope this isn't the only list to include them.

Otm
― Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:37 (seven years ago) link
First list to include Metallica. I like the first disc plus 2 songs on 2nd.
I was surprised, I thought the Iggy album was going to be forgotten. It's not terrible, but certainly not amazing, too many painfully awkward moments on it. I think it's a combination of reverence for old farts and everything Josh Homme touches.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:39 (seven years ago) link
However, if you have a chance to catch a re-run of Iggy's recent performance on Austin City Limits, do so, it's one of the best shows they've had this year.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 25 November 2016 22:47 (seven years ago) link
It's pretty mediocre, in my opinion. I'm not a fan of Iggy for the most part, but I was hoping for much more with Josh Homme involved.

ps i doubt anyones ever seen one outside of London..
1. The 1975 – 'I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It'
Worst album title since Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Sit and Think About Things or whatever the fuck it's called.

i just kind of assume they're going for the creepy stalker vibe on that one, and so i think of it as successful.

NME OTM.
