"24 Albums That Made Albums Matter"
Gucci Mane, Everybody Looking
feel like fader ran out of rap records here
also "year of the album" narratives officially exhausting

The average age of the band members in that list much be creeping towards Mojo level. Does the Kerrrang! reader base just not have any cool young bands any more?― Matt DC,
― Matt DC,
I imagine most of those bands we've not heard of are young emo bands

Car Bomb even better but not on the list, alas

thrilled to sift through that kerrang list
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 13:03 (seven years ago) link
but Kerrang has always been really loyal to old heritage acts
― Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 13:04 (seven years ago) link
the Kerrang list has a few good things on it, some real horrific stuff and the rest is bands I've never heard of as I havent read Kerrang in a decade bar the eoy albums issues.
― Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 13:05 (seven years ago) link
Really surprised the Maxwell album ended up being relatively underrated.

altho in fairness i think the max alb maybe does lack for some mystery quality that elicited the repeat compulsion of the one before... idgi cos whenever i listened i was riveted, senses overloaded, but after...
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 13:40 (seven years ago) link
i thought so too for a while but lately i've been coming back to it a lot in the way i feel magnetized to the first. (though i still sorta don't know why the stuart matthewman tracks are there and they sorta give me a nightmare vision of a bloozy sade record)
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 13:48 (seven years ago) link
yeah the matthewman trax are entirely it, i resent them v deeply. guess that they manage to effectively down the whole thing on their own is testament to the crystalline changeling construction of the rest, refinement to an near-imperceptible nanotech degree
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 14:07 (seven years ago) link
without them it is prob the most truly futuristic soul record ever

That Idolator top 10 is my favourite list so far. I think it's the first list to feature Shura. Also the Bruno Mars and Kristin Kontrol records really deserve their places.

― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 15:48 (seven years ago) link
the idolator list is pretty typical/predictable of nu-idolator, the mainstream pop records plus a few albums that mostly the pop blogosphere stans over

lol, i had no idea which these were and...they are two of the strongest tracks for me
i spend the first half of the album enjoying it but as background music but the second half completely reels me in and i'm usually spellbound by the end. still not determined the exact point in the album the shift occurs for me

KING have never represented their album to be a compilation + new songs (and couldn't many, many debut albums be so described?) as far as I know?

Finally, someone gives The Drones a nod. D.D Dumbo is interesting, been listening to it this past week. He kind of sounds like Sting more than Sting does. Or Eliot Sumner.

Not much crossover with my tastes, but it's actually more ILM aligned than a lot of lists.
You can see all the list in a more uniform format at http://www.albumoftheyear.org/lists.php (see recently added lists column on right)

― Van Horn Street, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:59 (seven years ago) link
got no problem with those two records. ATCQ is in my own personal top 5. but it's not close to being at the top end of all these lists. tbh it's the crushing inevitability of frank ocean and radiohead that is killing me
― Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link
Been following the Guardian countdown which was so far so predictable but I am genuinely astonished that enough of them liked that mess of a Rihanna album to vote it in at #7. Especially as Life of Paolo is probably still to come.
