I will limit my stumping to Jeff Rosenstock's WORRY, which I should emphasize will definitely not be of any interest to those w/ no patience for pop-punk and/or rock music generally. It inspired me, for better or (likely) worse, to try and make music for the first time in a decade. You can read lots of words about it in lots of places but you're better off just downloading it (donation/PWYC) from his label.

worry is gonna be real high on my albums ballot. it's at least as good as or better than btmi!'s vacation which is his other great record.

the mini punk rock opera on side two of worry is prob my favorite thing that i heard last year

yeah I stitched "Blast Damage Days" onwards into a single mp3 and I listen to it once a day at minimum

That second half is so good. It's easy to click on "To Be A Ghost..." and end up listening to the whole rest of the album.

jmm, Wednesday, 11 January 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

he played a surprise acoustic set here in TO between Christmas and NYE and it totally made my holidays, "To Be a Ghost" was probably the highlight

what boxedjoy said but some of the songs on the new one are a real fucking punch in the guts

Do you love pop?

Do you love CRAZY pop?

Do you want something with a ZILLION watts of energy and insanely proficient composition/playing skill?

Are you easily bored or unimpressed?

Neil Cicierega and Joanna Wang (Spotify) would like to help.

Their albums Spirit Phone and House Of Bullies are unrelenting rides of thrill, and the linked singles are highlights.

So, that's a psychedelic metal monster AND a brace of melodic marvels! Whatever will he recommend next?

voted. first time in history that i found the tracks ballot a lot easier to do than the albums one. was really clutching at straws about albums. maybe i'm popist after all..

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Friday, 13 January 2017 13:39 (seven years ago) link

I know both of the albums I'm going to vote for. 3 of the tracks are easy, haven't decided on the other two yet

saer, Friday, 13 January 2017 14:21 (seven years ago) link

ooh I gotta hear that Steve Roden, love his work

sleeve, Friday, 13 January 2017 15:07 (seven years ago) link

Best ambient stuff I head this year was the C. Diab album, No Perfect Wave. It's basically treated guitar, but it has that same sense of grandeur and fragility as some of Richard Skelton's stuff.

The new Biosphere album is really good, but I'm sure you already know about that. Besides that, the two Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith albums, and the Zalys cosmic drone album I mentioned upthread, this was my favourite ambient record of the year:

https://virtual1.bandcamp.com/album/uvunayatu

Omni Vu Deity is an alias for Ishq for their "4th world" project, but this isn't some corny "ethno techno" music a la Deep Forest, just some good use of percussion and well-chosen samples besides their typical brand of colourful ambient pads. Lovely stuff, IMO.

heard 'Calling In Sick' being played out at the weekend. Regret voting before I had time for this one to sink in. At least I voted 'Oh Yay' by Olatunji nice and high to make up for it

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 16 January 2017 14:55 (seven years ago) link

oh yeah Tuomas this Biosphere album is right up my alley, thanks for that. I didn't know he'd released something this year. I also like the new Lustmord that was nominated.
