i can't remember if i voted for pass dat or oui last year

marcos, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:09 (seven years ago) link

oui is nice, but the track with Jeremih I liked the most this year was enemiez

Dan S, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:11 (seven years ago) link

Wow, this second Underworld tune is awful! Never been a big fan of their vocals, but at least they used to have banging techno beats and cool, evocative synth loops underneath them... But this is just horrible mumblecore indie rock, not much better than The Fall.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:13 (seven years ago) link

"enemiez" was brilliant, "body" with dreezy was my jeremih fix of 2k16

I like "Oui," I wanted to make a terrible joke.

Are people voting for underworld out of eager anticipation of the trainspotting sequel?

danzig, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:18 (seven years ago) link

Tuomas owning this thread. Kudos

The people who liked the Underworld album REALLY liked it: Underworld - Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future (Coming March 18, 2016)

As someone who kinda hates the Fall, I'm into the Tuomas trolling upthread (even though I like the Underworld track).

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 23 January 2017 19:21 (seven years ago) link

me too

marcos, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:22 (seven years ago) link

Watershed moment: the Fall haters are coming out of their gritty, miserable holes. Thank you Tuomas, I'm taking note here.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:24 (seven years ago) link

Think a lot of Underworld naysayers might actually like 'Santiago Cuatro' from the album if nothing else.

I like the album generally but not 'If Rah' much at all.

nashwan, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:29 (seven years ago) link

The first Underworld track I ever heard was this one (the compilation I had labelled it as Underworld, not Lemon Interupt), when I was 14... I really, really liked the tune, it was so evocative and deep and mysterious (and being a geek I obviously dug the Akira sample at the end), and I thought they were some kind of experimental trance/ambient house act. Bought Dubnobass... and was disappointed to discover they had silly nasal singing on every tune, even the version of "Dirty". So my history with Underworld has literally been all downhill from that first counter, and that tune upthread is pretty much the nadir.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:30 (seven years ago) link

And yeah, I get it, my conception of them was misguided, they were always a rock band disguising as a techno act, but it's so sad, they had so much potential in them, if they'd just proceeded to the direction pointed out by the original "Dirty".

Let a hundred flowers bloom

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:33 (seven years ago) link

i love a good amount of underworld but not much from this one

marcos, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:35 (seven years ago) link

it's so sad, they had so much potential in them, if they'd just proceeded to the direction pointed out by the original "Dirty".

they could have had a successful and critically acclaimed career, it's true....

nomar, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:36 (seven years ago) link

The original 'Dirty' with its prominent rock guitar twangs.

nashwan, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:37 (seven years ago) link

Are there only three more tracks today?

nashwan, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:37 (seven years ago) link

Huh?

(xpost)

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:38 (seven years ago) link

lol, I don't even like Underworld but "so much squandered potential caused by not pandering exactly to my tastes" is an incredibly perplexing sentiment.

emil.y, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:38 (seven years ago) link

someone please film Tuomas listening to Underneath the Radar

left hand hierarchy (imago), Monday, 23 January 2017 19:41 (seven years ago) link

Well they could've been a great techno act! Instead of becoming a critically acclaimed crossover-whatever act for people who might not even like techno. Of course potential squandered to the left can be acclaim gained on the right, but I'm only speaking from my point of view, as a rock-hating tehno lover. They lost us while they claimed you.

(xpost to Emily)

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:42 (seven years ago) link

the direction they went in was so much better, "Dirty Epic" >>>> "Dirty"

frogbs, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:43 (seven years ago) link

I bet you like rock music though?

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:44 (seven years ago) link

underworld were great in the '90s but my interest in them in 2016 was nil, and these tracks don't change that; i hope newer house and techno artists will get a look in, too

gr8080, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:46 (seven years ago) link

imo this is like the tenth best song on the album, still great

left hand hierarchy (imago), Monday, 23 January 2017 19:46 (seven years ago) link

Thought that was the best 'new' track on the album - nothing quite superior to the previously known songs though.

nashwan, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:47 (seven years ago) link

Yay! That was my #5! I'm not as huge a fan of the album as some others here (mostly because of the odd mixing), but that's one helluva jam, great way to end an album. Their best tune, IMO.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:48 (seven years ago) link

wonderful song, very moving final track

lex pretend, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:49 (seven years ago) link

lots of closing tracks so far in this poll, sign of the times maybe

"Native Land"is the most beautiful song I heard last year.

They didn't claim me, as you might have gathered if you'd actually read my post. FFS. (Also dude, I don't know if you've noticed but I frickin love electronic music, sorry that I've ~tainted~ myself in your eyes by also liking things with *gasp* guitars but prob NAGL to condescend to me on this issue.)

emil.y, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:53 (seven years ago) link

The combination of that incredible vocal and those beautiful synths are perfection. Probably my favourite KING song after Hey (Extended Mix).

Kitchen Person, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

back to crowd sizes again lol

marcos, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

woops wrong thread sorry to muck up this one

marcos, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

"native land" is a lovely outro

ciderpress, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:57 (seven years ago) link

I'm not sure how many unifying techno records there were from last year but I'd stick a fiver on Avalon Emerson or Willow appearing.

Matt DC, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:57 (seven years ago) link

Im sorry, Emily, I know you love electronic music... That "you" was supposed to mean "you all" in plural, not you personally. (Why doesn't English have different words for singular and plural second person, it can get confusing?)

Tuomas, Monday, 23 January 2017 19:58 (seven years ago) link

youse is plural of you fyi

left hand hierarchy (imago), Monday, 23 January 2017 19:58 (seven years ago) link

This KING song is just making me wish I was listening to Sade or Les Nubiens instead.

(The caption: “fine dining.”) (DJP), Monday, 23 January 2017 19:59 (seven years ago) link

I wasn't aware of KING until 'The Greatest' placed in last year's poll so the whole album was new to me - 'Native Land' isn't my favourite but still happy to see it here.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 23 January 2017 20:00 (seven years ago) link

oh hey cool this thing is happening. i voted for 'atomic number' (all songs about atomic weapons are great) + 'girl next door'
