"Calling In Sick" is soooooo massive, way too low here

that comet control song sure is long

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:08 (seven years ago) link

Probably the only soca anthem that really grabbed me this year.

it's fucking brilliant, probably my favourite too, but i don't know why nobody picked up on "Fraid Jab" which is barely behind it imo

so many Kings

xxpost, wait until 'The Hustle' shows up.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 23 January 2017 21:12 (seven years ago) link

that King Bubba track totally rules and it is pleasing to see a big ol' ugly baldy in the mix.

calzino, Monday, 23 January 2017 21:13 (seven years ago) link

Voted for Calling in Sick after discovering it on the Spotify playlist. Rum is me only medicine!

"The Hustle" is amazing and I will be sad if my non-voting costs it a placement

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:15 (seven years ago) link

Crossing my fingers that that lapsley/dj koze remix shows up but I think I might be out of luck

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:16 (seven years ago) link

heard lots of soca this year with some firm faves from Hypasounds, Fay-Ann Lyons, Kerwin Du Bois and of course Olatunji who also had the track 'Big Business' which was brilliant. feel like soca is on the tip of breaking into the global mainstream any point.

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:17 (seven years ago) link

haha King Bubba FM looks like the Judge Dread of soca

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:19 (seven years ago) link

meanwhile I just want to give a little shout out to breastcrawl, ShariVari, rob and especially longneck for their work on the various soca, dancehall and afrobeats threads. You are doing some absolutely Stirling work and informing my music listening more than p much anything right now

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:23 (seven years ago) link

Only voted for new-this-year KING songs, but would be happy if each placed.

Crossing my fingers that that lapsley/dj koze remix shows up but I think I might be out of luck

I think that'll show up.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:25 (seven years ago) link

I've liked my share of post-BEAUCOUP Underworld, but Tuomas otm about their newest stuff

ILXorcist 2: The Heretic (Eric H.), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:26 (seven years ago) link

Awesome! I'm not familiar with half of these so we're on to a good start.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:27 (seven years ago) link

I did roll my eyes at some of the Tuomas posts but yeah that track did sound like the fall and it was totally wack

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:29 (seven years ago) link

that Lapsley remix is pure ilm fodder. I'd place a reasonable amount of dosh on it getting in the top 12

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Monday, 23 January 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link

Yeah "I Exhale" is like a bad version of "Hit The North". I don't get the big deal about the new album in general. They started to bore me after "A Hundred Days Off" although I liked some of the Hyde/Eno stuff.

The Olatunji track is the best discovery of the day

Chairlift: Like every Chairlift song I've ever heard, completely unmemorable.

Christine: Heard this on Fluxblog, loved it, but didn't remember that it was called "Tilted" or I would have voted for it. I spent much of 2016 telling people that things were "Actually Good" in a Matt Yglesias voice.

Weeknd: I still kind of hate everything this guy did after his first mixtape, and his constructed identity is so repellent. But this is way better than his MJ "Last Dance With Mary Jane" (but about coke) song from last year, or at least the verse is.

Chance: Like this guy but this was completely unmemorable.

Cellars: I like this, but only because I like the Genesis guitar bite.

Miguel and Kacey Musgraves: Ooh, this really works as a duet, and the Marc Ribot guitar/bass bits add a lot too.

Abra: Nice house-y feel but devoid of hooks, so no thanks.

Underworld: I haven't thought of these guys for years but I liked both of these. I'm particularly partial to the skronky, noisy bits in "I Exhale", which are a bit more novel than their normal chilly Luomo-ism sound. Nobody's listening to Underworld for the lyrics; maybe they could just sample an Adam Curtis voiceover (or a Pet Shop Boys a cappella) to save money.

Jeremih: I loved this song in 2015 and didn't vote for it this year on principle. But on reflection the YT track sounds awful---so distorted (?)---and it isn't as charming as I remember.

King Bubba FM: don't know anything about soca but this is good. I wish it hit a bit harder, somehow. (Was "Differentology" soca too?)

Thanx, dog latin. Hopefully some afropop will place this year for a change, Tekno's "Pana" at the very least.

have to weirdly admit that i've never heard chance before this and...this guy is goon cru approved, right? because "all night" isn't much

k3vin k., Monday, 23 January 2017 23:18 (seven years ago) link

I like a bunch of the stuff that's already placed. Love that case/lang/veirs' track a lot. I voted for it. But Song to Judee was also really good, gotta love a song about Judee Sill! Well, actually I liked the whole album, it's definitely my kind of thing.

I'm actually surprised the Comet Control track placed and many people like it! I was gonna nom. it but imago already had. Yeah, it's not that representative of the album it's on, their other tracks are a lot less epic.

I figured Calling In Sick would have placed higher, tbh. Seems like a song all of ILM can enjoy.

omg lol no please stop this argh.

And thanks, dog latin. ILM is one of the few places where I still discover new music so it's good to be able to contribute.

As for a harder Calling In Sick, DJ Puffy has a nice roadmix that might work for you, structrural ambiguity:

kind of a weird chance track to place. never even considered voting for it. how have you avoided him for the last couple of years? Other tracks will place here that should give you a better sample.

pop music moves so fast, those 2011 tracks seem alien now

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 00:03 (seven years ago) link

Let's see:

77 CHAIRLIFT "Moth to the Flame"
This is ok if a bit inoffensive... listened to it a couple of times last year and kept forgetting about it.

76 CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS "Tilted"
I like this a lot but Shura did this sort of sound for me better this year.

74 (tie) THE WEEKND FT DAFT PUNK "Starboy"
I like 'I Feel it Coming' much better but both songs seem to me solidified by the Daft Punk guest spot not by the Weeknd.

74 (tie) CHANCE THE RAPPER "All Night"
This one was one of my most played songs this summer. Love that sort of video game beat

73 UNDERWORLD "Nylon Strung"
Had no idea Underworld had released anything this year but this is one of the best songs I've heard from them.

71 (tie) CASE/LANG/VEIRS "Atomic Number"
Thought I'd love this as I like them as solo artists but I'm not much of a fan of how their voices sounds together. I guess it's a grower but didn't like this on first listen.

71 (tie) OLATUNJI "Oh Yay"
I might like this if I heard it with warmer weather but right now the weather is dry and cold and miserable and I'm not in the right mood for it. Love having this sort of wild card on the ranking tho, so kudos for whoever voted for it.

70 CELLARS "Nighttime Girl"
I really like this, first time listening... Was about to comment that this sound very influenced by Ariel Pink and it turns out he is the producer behind it. I'm starting to get fed up with the 80's pastiche but I've always been a fan of AP's atmospheric approach.

69 COMET CONTROL "Artificial Light"
I'm not in the mood for this one right now as it appears to be a 10 min slowcore thing but I'll listen to it later.

68 MIGUEL FT KASEY MUSGRAVES "Waves (Remix)"
Oh wow I didn't know this one and it's amazing!!! That country guitar and steel guitar additions + Kasey puts the original version to shame. Had I known this one before I'd added to my ballot.

67 ABRA "Crybaby"
I'm sure I'd loved this a couple of years ago butI guess at this point I'm not feeling very interested in hearing anymore of this sort of lo-fi r&b unless it breaks some rules or goes somewhere unexpected.

66 BRANDY CLARK "Girl Next Door"
Sorry not feeling this one but I do loved 'Daughter' off this record.

65 UNDERWORLD "I Exhale"
This kind of reminds me of The Fall, well rather it reminds me of the Von Sudenfed project with Mark E Smith and Mouse on Mars... it takes time to build muscle but its nice once it gets going but still this didn't grab me as much Nylon Strung which deserved to be higher than this one imho.

64 JEREMIH "Oui"
The production sounds ok but there's better songs on the record. Also listening to this guy makes me want to listen to Miguel or Frank Ocean instead. I don't know what it is exactly but something about his voice grates me.

63 + 62 KING "Native Land" + "Hey (Extended Mix)"
I love these... every song I've heard of them feels so sensual and effortless. Hey has been on constant repeat throughout several playlists since its original release in 2011. RIYL The Internet and Badu.

61 KING BUBBA FM "Calling In Sick"
Same as Olatunji... can't really listen to this one right now.

The Runtown remix of Oh Yay was on the ilx summer playlist. Heard it over and over all summer. People should check out that version as well. Also, how did Runtown's Bend Down Pause not get nominated?
