I like a bunch of the stuff that's already placed. Love that case/lang/veirs' track a lot. I voted for it. But Song to Judee was also really good, gotta love a song about Judee Sill! Well, actually I liked the whole album, it's definitely my kind of thing.
I'm actually surprised the Comet Control track placed and many people like it! I was gonna nom. it but imago already had. Yeah, it's not that representative of the album it's on, their other tracks are a lot less epic.
I figured Calling In Sick would have placed higher, tbh. Seems like a song all of ILM can enjoy.

omg lol no please stop this argh.
And thanks, dog latin. ILM is one of the few places where I still discover new music so it's good to be able to contribute.
As for a harder Calling In Sick, DJ Puffy has a nice roadmix that might work for you, structrural ambiguity:

kind of a weird chance track to place. never even considered voting for it. how have you avoided him for the last couple of years? Other tracks will place here that should give you a better sample.

Let's see:
77 CHAIRLIFT "Moth to the Flame"This is ok if a bit inoffensive... listened to it a couple of times last year and kept forgetting about it.
76 CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS "Tilted"I like this a lot but Shura did this sort of sound for me better this year.
74 (tie) THE WEEKND FT DAFT PUNK "Starboy"I like 'I Feel it Coming' much better but both songs seem to me solidified by the Daft Punk guest spot not by the Weeknd.
74 (tie) CHANCE THE RAPPER "All Night"This one was one of my most played songs this summer. Love that sort of video game beat
73 UNDERWORLD "Nylon Strung"Had no idea Underworld had released anything this year but this is one of the best songs I've heard from them.
71 (tie) CASE/LANG/VEIRS "Atomic Number"Thought I'd love this as I like them as solo artists but I'm not much of a fan of how their voices sounds together. I guess it's a grower but didn't like this on first listen.
71 (tie) OLATUNJI "Oh Yay"I might like this if I heard it with warmer weather but right now the weather is dry and cold and miserable and I'm not in the right mood for it. Love having this sort of wild card on the ranking tho, so kudos for whoever voted for it.
70 CELLARS "Nighttime Girl"I really like this, first time listening... Was about to comment that this sound very influenced by Ariel Pink and it turns out he is the producer behind it. I'm starting to get fed up with the 80's pastiche but I've always been a fan of AP's atmospheric approach.
69 COMET CONTROL "Artificial Light"I'm not in the mood for this one right now as it appears to be a 10 min slowcore thing but I'll listen to it later.
68 MIGUEL FT KASEY MUSGRAVES "Waves (Remix)"Oh wow I didn't know this one and it's amazing!!! That country guitar and steel guitar additions + Kasey puts the original version to shame. Had I known this one before I'd added to my ballot.
67 ABRA "Crybaby"I'm sure I'd loved this a couple of years ago butI guess at this point I'm not feeling very interested in hearing anymore of this sort of lo-fi r&b unless it breaks some rules or goes somewhere unexpected.
66 BRANDY CLARK "Girl Next Door"Sorry not feeling this one but I do loved 'Daughter' off this record.
65 UNDERWORLD "I Exhale"This kind of reminds me of The Fall, well rather it reminds me of the Von Sudenfed project with Mark E Smith and Mouse on Mars... it takes time to build muscle but its nice once it gets going but still this didn't grab me as much Nylon Strung which deserved to be higher than this one imho.
64 JEREMIH "Oui"The production sounds ok but there's better songs on the record. Also listening to this guy makes me want to listen to Miguel or Frank Ocean instead. I don't know what it is exactly but something about his voice grates me.
63 + 62 KING "Native Land" + "Hey (Extended Mix)"I love these... every song I've heard of them feels so sensual and effortless. Hey has been on constant repeat throughout several playlists since its original release in 2011. RIYL The Internet and Badu.
61 KING BUBBA FM "Calling In Sick"Same as Olatunji... can't really listen to this one right now.

I was ready to dismiss the Comet Control song as an enjoyable genre exercise but I didn't expect it to sound so much like Low in space - there's an emotional pull there that often isn't with this stuff even if it's pushing a load of totally obvious buttons.
Never heard Calling In Sick before but it's incredible. I immediately sent it to Mrs DC whose response was "I'm putting the stereo on to enjoy this incredible art before breakfast".
The beat on the Abra song is a jam but her voice is still like soggy cardboard so nah.
There is nothing to this Cellars track at all but that also means there's nothing that might alienate the average Popjustice reader so I assume it found an appropriate audience.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 08:54 (seven years ago) link
Abra sounded better when I saw her live than she usually does on record.

This was another tune/artist I knew nothing about before encountering it on the nominations list, but it was so great on the first listen I had to vote for it.
I wonder if "Koffi Anan" is some kind of wordplay on Kofi Annan that foreigners don't get, because the lyrics refer to it as a dance routine and not the person?

When I asked her about the title she said it was just a positive Ghanaian reference that popped into her head (the song/dance was inspired by Ghanaian alkayida dance moves) and didn't have any other meaning - the song was a freestyle that wasn't really intended to be as huge a hit as it was (her second album Mama Africa is excellent but it's definitely more carefully structured and thought-out, and she's a singer who doesn't ever really rap like she does here usually)
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:52 (seven years ago) link
Catching up on yesterday...the Brandy Clark song has a really cool tense postpunk/balearic thing in the verses, which works really well in the country context. Just wish the chorus was a little less...downhome. It coulda been the country Aerial. Still largely in favour
― left hand hierarchy (imago), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:53 (seven years ago) link
most bizarre take on "Girl Next Door": hard rock Meredith Brooks or balearic postpunk Aerial
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:54 (seven years ago) link
oh that yemi alade album is fantastic through and through. I voted 'Ferrari' in the tracks poll and while I'm sure it's not even the best song on there, it was still such a prominent song for me this year.
― Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:56 (seven years ago) link
I guess it needs a big country chorus to still be country, colours don't run &c &c

I didn't mean that it sounds like "Bitch", just that the persona and the message in those two songs is pretty much the same. And just to be clear, I like the lyrics of both.
