think my fav soca track of last year was gbm nutron and fay-ann-lyons' "scene"

I was ready to dismiss the Comet Control song as an enjoyable genre exercise but I didn't expect it to sound so much like Low in space - there's an emotional pull there that often isn't with this stuff even if it's pushing a load of totally obvious buttons.
Never heard Calling In Sick before but it's incredible. I immediately sent it to Mrs DC whose response was "I'm putting the stereo on to enjoy this incredible art before breakfast".
The beat on the Abra song is a jam but her voice is still like soggy cardboard so nah.
There is nothing to this Cellars track at all but that also means there's nothing that might alienate the average Popjustice reader so I assume it found an appropriate audience.

Abra sounded better when I saw her live than she usually does on record.

This surprises me. I thought Kaputt was the hands down winner in albums

I mean, for #1 votes...
And I just looked it up, and Kaputt got 12 of them

I want to say that Calling in Sick is overrated, because it's not as good as Oh Yay. But on the other hand, I've heard it over and over and over both yesterday and today, so...

Let me see you do the Koffi Anan.
morning!i like how this years rollout seems to slowly moving through different ilm threads

This was another tune/artist I knew nothing about before encountering it on the nominations list, but it was so great on the first listen I had to vote for it.
I wonder if "Koffi Anan" is some kind of wordplay on Kofi Annan that foreigners don't get, because the lyrics refer to it as a dance routine and not the person?

Ooooh that's good. Love that minimal bloop.

I love the weary derision in her voice when she says "he come to my house with a bag of money and he say that he take me to Paris or Australia or somewhere".
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:48 (seven years ago) link
Awesome! Would have voted for it if I'd followed the afropop thread closely enough.
Hope to see some K-pop on there also, probably not any bollywood :(

i'd be surprised to see kpop this year despite some real gems being nominatedhad a couple of my longlist that got culled

When I asked her about the title she said it was just a positive Ghanaian reference that popped into her head (the song/dance was inspired by Ghanaian alkayida dance moves) and didn't have any other meaning - the song was a freestyle that wasn't really intended to be as huge a hit as it was (her second album Mama Africa is excellent but it's definitely more carefully structured and thought-out, and she's a singer who doesn't ever really rap like she does here usually)
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:52 (seven years ago) link
Catching up on yesterday...the Brandy Clark song has a really cool tense postpunk/balearic thing in the verses, which works really well in the country context. Just wish the chorus was a little less...downhome. It coulda been the country Aerial. Still largely in favour
― left hand hierarchy (imago), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:53 (seven years ago) link
most bizarre take on "Girl Next Door": hard rock Meredith Brooks or balearic postpunk Aerial
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:54 (seven years ago) link
oh that yemi alade album is fantastic through and through. I voted 'Ferrari' in the tracks poll and while I'm sure it's not even the best song on there, it was still such a prominent song for me this year.
― Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:56 (seven years ago) link
I guess it needs a big country chorus to still be country, colours don't run &c &c
― left hand hierarchy (imago), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:57 (seven years ago) link
Just watched a couple of other Yemi Alade videos, she's great.
― emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 12:58 (seven years ago) link
I didn't mean that it sounds like "Bitch", just that the persona and the message in those two songs is pretty much the same. And just to be clear, I like the lyrics of both.

'Koffi Annan' a very late cut from my ballot as I knew it had a good chance of placing.

Ghana has the best song/dance names. Alkayida. Lapaz Toyota.

Always amazed that Bruno Mars is a person that ILM takes seriously. This is mostly because he has the worst look of any major pop star that isn't Robin Thicke.

For a long time I thought Bruno Mars was some Dutch trance DJ, because his name sounds like that. Not sure if he'd be any better of worse if it was true.

Anyway, I guess there are worse building blocks to make pastichey pop hits from than '80s post-disco/boogie. And this one at least doesn't sound like such a blatant Kool & the Gang copy as "Uptown Funk".
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 13:17 (seven years ago) link
u only have to listen to like 10 seconds of snoop dogg 'signs' or whatever again to see this bruno for the thin gruel it is

Uptown Funk is the best office party track ever. 24 k magic is a bad copy. Which is still ok.

I looove original '80s boogie, even more than '70s disco, so I've nothing in theory against someone doing it in 2016. But this sounds a bit too clean & polished, seamless, committee-designed. I can see it working on a drunken disco night in my working class neighbourhood, but wouldn't probably listen to it just for fun on the headphones.
