really don't get this one at all, i hate the deliberately awkward pc music syncopation

ufo, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 13:57 (seven years ago) link

i don't mind super natural
even if it's probably the worst thing either two have done in the past couple of years

nxd, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 13:58 (seven years ago) link

this is a fantastic track

Lennon, Elvis, Hendrix etc (dog latin), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:00 (seven years ago) link

Yes!! This was #22 on my ballot. Danny L Harle's latest stuff feels to me like a shrewd sidestep away from PC music by its best producer. I can't not enjoy something this cute and over the top.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:01 (seven years ago) link

love zapp & squealing talk box goodness and have always had an odd affection for bruno mars (short&sweet? his grin? zoot suit?) but this only even tries to be p standard

ogmor, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:02 (seven years ago) link

Yesterday was a war of attrition. Today is already putting that into perspective with two records which are two career ending tackles on inner peace

saer, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:12 (seven years ago) link

That last one is literally an advert for anxiety

saer, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:13 (seven years ago) link

Ever since the first records I've found Grouper doesn't put enough echo on the songs. They're supposed to be hard to reach, that's part of the attraction. It's a formal move toward an only semi-lucid mimesis.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:13 (seven years ago) link

I didn't end up voting for Super Natural but it was one my best discoveries going through the nominations playlist.

I'm happy to standup for 24K Magic. It ended up growing on me a lot after initially being underwhelmed by it. The album was one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. There are actually better songs on the album. I was expecting Versace On The Floor to place over the title track. It's the best thing he's done.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:22 (seven years ago) link

"24k magic" is way more shiny assemblage than song so i'm also sorta wondering what it's doing here (iirc the thread was less a total endorsement than several people wondering if it sounded sufficiently like chromeo)

gr8080, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:25 (seven years ago) link

man I gotta remember next year that it doesn't take many votes to crack this thing, the emo goons should assemble

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:27 (seven years ago) link

That might be the first track in the countdown not on Spotify? (I've been hastily compiling a playlist for the commute...)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link

(and it's pretty good too)

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link

"super natural" is a migraine ironed out into song form, i'll probably never know how i actually feel about it

For a long time I thought Bruno Mars was some Dutch trance DJ, because his name sounds like that.

lol

flopson, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:30 (seven years ago) link

feel like emo goons could show up strong in albums this year, harder to build consensus for tracks in rock subgenres than pop

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:30 (seven years ago) link

I'm still hoping (probably in vain) for some emo to creep into the tracks poll.

tangenttangent, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:33 (seven years ago) link

I didn't vote for the Harle/Jepsen but I do like it. All your emo dreams will be crushed by this cruel world btw

YAYYYY FAMMIN, my #2

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:35 (seven years ago) link

Really happy this made it in.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:36 (seven years ago) link

had never heard of famm'in before but holy shit that's really incredible, i was rapt

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:38 (seven years ago) link

This sounds pretty dope, and uncategorizable (to my Western old geezer ears, at least), which is always a bonus.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:38 (seven years ago) link

there's SO MUCH going on while the song swans gracefully around

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:38 (seven years ago) link

this is my fav find so far

nxd, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:41 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, I like it that you can't really tell what's gonna happen next, yet it all still sounds coherent and not like a dog's dinner.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:41 (seven years ago) link

Ok, wow at those synth bamboo flutes, such '90s flashbacks!

Tuomas, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:42 (seven years ago) link

OK wow that is great

I am enjoying "Circle."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:43 (seven years ago) link

They're a supergroup (FEMM & FAKY & Yup'in = FAMM'IN), but tbh I love this way way more than I like the separate artists.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link

thrilled to see this make it, i voted for it but really wasn't expecting it to show up

ufo, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:49 (seven years ago) link

i love "circle" and completely forgot about it on my ballot. palace built inside of a glacier.

gr8080, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:53 (seven years ago) link

Thanks to the five of you who made it possible for us to hear this! (Esp Emily with her #2 vote).

(I mean, I did get 200+ tracks into the 1000+ track Spotify shortlist after Xmas but I never reached this).

xp

this is not how I woke up but it's how I look now

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 14:59 (seven years ago) link

v glad that Riton track made it, felt it was kind of ubiquitous over the summer and never unwelcome though it was just a distant memory for me by year end

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:00 (seven years ago) link

I am into this one too! New to me but as I've said elsewhere 2016 was not a very music-filled year for me.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:03 (seven years ago) link

this is not how I woke up but it's how I look now

^^^ Also I genuinely love this lyric.

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:04 (seven years ago) link

speechless @ 'circle'. no d∆wn can test this

r|t|c, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:07 (seven years ago) link

i couldn't get my shit together this year to vote for various reasons, but if i had, that famm'in song woulda made my top 5 easy

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:08 (seven years ago) link

riton was sub-redlight and the preditah rmx https://youtu.be/lteJcEf_1x0 by far preferred but yeah, all just seems a v long time ago

r|t|c, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:12 (seven years ago) link

Wow, 'Circle' is great!

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link

yeah "Circle" is totally doing my head in right now

and this was on Avex?? shouldn't have missed it

frogbs, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:19 (seven years ago) link

Enjoyed "Circle" too, but it just compelled me to put on Kenji Kawai's Ghost in the Shell soundtrack.

Free Melania (Sanpaku), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

whoa this famm'in track is doooooooooooope

why do you think so brad?? she's always struck me as the kind of artist I should love more than I do and I'm never sure whether it's because I just don't give her albums enough tries or not
