Since I'm not sure how well-known The Appleseed Cast is around here, I just want to give a shout out to their masterpiece(s), Low Level Owl. It's like the title track of SDRE's Rising Tide stretched to two hours. It has everything. For everyone. It's that good.

ok I'm gonna make my Juno pitch and then shut up about it
This is the Way it Goes and Goes and GoesI think a lot of us go through that phase when we're young and we want things that are just ours. That's why I spent a lot of my adolescence listening to british bands no one else around me gave a fuck about or had even heard of. In the same way, Juno were an obvious band for me to latch onto because even at the time (the late 90s / early aughts) it didn't seem like they were getting the shine of other bands in their orbit (most obviously the Dismemberment Plan, with whom they split a 7-inch [their half was better imo]). Anyway, TITWIGAGAG still sounds fresh and dynamic to me thousands of listens later. The way "All Your Friends are Comedians" (and of the best singles post-hardcore ever produced) shifts back and forth from 6/8 to 4/4 without a halt in intensity always amazes me. No other band (with one possible exception) ever used three guitarists with greater ingenuity and grace - listen to the overlapping melodies and tones in "The Great Salt Lake." No other band combined the dynamics of post-rock ("Leave a Clean Camp...", "January Arms") with an emo feel more convincingly. I named my first college radio show after "A Listening Ear." As a now 30-year-old miserable basement fuckboy this is still completely my shit.
Sample tracks: "All Your Friends are Comedians," "The Great Salt Lake," "The Young Influentials"
A Future Lived in Past Tense"Kitchen sink final albums" are one of my favorite kinds (see also: Young Machetes). In another thread, we were discussing how when you're young and impressionable, you're especially vulnerable to the whims of tastemakers, and I remember Pitchfork's middling review (basically slamming it for being too indulgent) causing me a lot of angst. I think this must have been one of the first albums I loved *for* its flaws and not in spite of them. The ludicrous song titles, the beyond-cryptic lyrics and even more anguished vocals, the glacially paced songs - I still love it all. The harmonic details are still completely ridiculous, now aided by Nate Mendel (SDRE, the Foos) on bass, and again what really impresses me is the fluidity of the songwriting and performances. Despite the many genres being touched on (now with an added 70s grandiosity) nothing feels artificially synthesized. This is one of those records you don't come back from after making, so I was the opposite of surprised when they split afterwards. I'm still angry that it's impossible to buy either of these albums on vinyl for less than three figures.
Sample tracks: "Covered With Hair," "Help is on the Way," "The Trail of Your Blood in the Snow"

Did no one really nominate anything by Rise Against? The Sufferer and the Witness seems like it would fit. I listened to "The Good Left Undone" a decent amount that year.
Ha, it occurred to me because "All Your Friends Are Comedians" made me think a bit of a non-mersh Rise Against (not a bad thing) in an oblique way.
― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 23:08 (seven years ago) link
so painful going thru this playlist. just got up to mark mission brand scar and was like i would love to listen to this album for the 10th time this year but i must skip it bc i have like 250 albums yet to go.
― Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 23:09 (seven years ago) link
Although I guess the Juno album came out two years before the first Rise Against album so they would be the mersh "Comedians" if my random mental associations amounted to anything.

― My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 23:11 (seven years ago) link

Hag Seed will be very close to the top of my ballot, I wanted to make sure to campaign for them...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UYUMJlLmz8
In high school, Sunny Day Real Estate was the most important band to me. Jeremy Enigk contributed guest vocals to the song "Tourmaline" from this album which is what led me to track it down. Like literally every album that will make my ballot, it's one of those records I rarely listen to these days, but it's one that still holds up.
Anyway, power trio with lead bass!! Fuck, I love this record so much.
