re: Johnny Foreigner, I haven't heard the music yet, but the opening track is a strong contender for my number 1 on the song titles side poll.

i don't think anyone is going to ban u for mentioning soulseek :p

btw: http://www.avclub.com/article/drive-announces-first-new-album-17-years-250800

we're right in the midst of the emo revival zeitgeist!

Mordy, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 16:54 (seven years ago) link

lol that only 'drive' is left of the bandname in the url

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 16:56 (seven years ago) link

I've been using slsk since high school so its mentioning again here is deeply appropriate

No matter what the final results are, I'll consider this a win :D

the benton falls record recommended upthread is also really good! feel like almost every current mathy emo band is or has been trying to remake it

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 17:12 (seven years ago) link

there are still mathy bands?

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:01 (seven years ago) link

*gestures vaguely* they're everywhere. most of them are real boring

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

I don't really have that much in the way of emo in my collection so I've been doing some homework, Jejune and The Appleseed Cast have stuck with me so far.

I think I need my emo cut with something else, even if it's just, like a hint of hardcore or post-rock or whatever

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

Which Appleseed Cast album?

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:09 (seven years ago) link

Mare Vitalis and Low Level Owl

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:11 (seven years ago) link

not sure which AC album im gonna vote for

Spottie, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:13 (seven years ago) link

I'll probably go for both if my ballot's looking a bit thin

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:16 (seven years ago) link

me neither though i'm leaning toward mare vitalis xpost

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:16 (seven years ago) link

the cello on this Benton Falls records reminds me that someone really should have nominated Faraquet's The View from This Tower.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:17 (seven years ago) link

oh man, the thirty ought six record

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:18 (seven years ago) link

thrilled that ppl really repped for old evil-sounding post-hardcore that i've never heard before

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:18 (seven years ago) link

there was a time in college where i would listen to anything that sounded like fugazi/hoover and i would've lost my mind over thirty ought six

yeah its a little more succinct.

Spottie, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:24 (seven years ago) link

xxp That reminds me, I love Fugazi but have never listened to Rites of Spring or Embrace, should probably get round to that... and a load of other stuff

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:25 (seven years ago) link

Mare Vitalis and Low Level Owl

Both classics. But you should also try the follow-up to LLO, Two Conversations. Overall it's weaker than both MV and LLO, but it has two of their best songs, 'Fight Song' and 'Innocent Vigilant Ordinary':

def. love 2 convos. i saw them when they were touring that release.

Spottie, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 18:58 (seven years ago) link

Will do!

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 19:07 (seven years ago) link

I saw them when only the first volume of Low Level Owl had been released, but they already sold volume 2 after the show. Great band, and nice guys too.

Yes! So cool to see people digging that record.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 19:36 (seven years ago) link

I love Low Level Owl but if we're talking *emo* Appleseed Cast albums I have to go with Mare Vitalis. LLO is where they start veering into post-rock imo (not that that's a bad thing).

Also: a great Appleseed Cast track from an album not nominated

Ha, I was going to post something about Peregrine earlier, but then I realised it wasn't nominated.
Other good songs from that album are Silas' Knife, Song 3 and the fantastic February.

After that, I lost sight of them. I think they got a new drummer around that time, which didn't help.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:20 (seven years ago) link

I could well end up voting for all three nominated Appleseed Cast records...

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:21 (seven years ago) link

their most recent album was good but didn't stick with me

xp

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:21 (seven years ago) link

same

Spottie, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:27 (seven years ago) link

Man, we should have nominated Peregrine. What a great album. I haven't heard it in years and forgot how good it is.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:27 (seven years ago) link

love that one too

Spottie, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:28 (seven years ago) link

Ooh, nice surprise, those female vocals in the second track.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:39 (seven years ago) link

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 20:43 (seven years ago) link

gonna try to listen to Chief Assassin to the Sinister without just listening to "Shang vs. Hanger" over and over

y'know in retrospect it's kinda weird to me that Xiu Xiu never got the "emo" tab that I can recall

*tag

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 21:22 (seven years ago) link

On the other hand, I never got the memo that Three Mile Pilot are considered emo. All that sci-fi artwork on the cover threw me off I guess.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link

a bit on the proggy/experimental side of emo but imo they count

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 22 February 2017 21:36 (seven years ago) link

'Inner Bishop' is my jam. So good.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 21:47 (seven years ago) link

why do i find dismemberment vox so unpleasant

Mordy, Wednesday, 22 February 2017 22:56 (seven years ago) link

even on the later albums?
