101. Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine

shocked by the lowness

human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 12 April 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link

I probably shoulda voted for it if I wanted it higher, but I thought that was a Top 20 lock with or without me,

human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 12 April 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link

If Luv n Haight can't crack the top 100, I take back my predictio of Family Affair winning this.

Based on today's results, the top 10 is even harder to figure out than yesterday.

I'm Goin' Left by Syreeta was my number six. The first song on my favourite soul album ever.

108. The Chi-Lites - Oh Girl

The ultimate TOO LOW for me, so far. Had this in my top 10.

Also surprised at the "Ain't No Sunshine" not even cracking the top 100.

102. Sly & The Family Stone - Luv N' Haight 240 points / 4 votes
103. The Dramatics - Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get 239 points / 4 votes
108. The Chi-Lites - Oh Girl 228 points / 4 votes
110. Blue Magic - Sideshow 226 points / 5 votes
111. Raydio - You Can't Change That 226 points / 4 votes
114. Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye 224 points / 4 votes
118. The Spinners - It's a Shame 221 points / 5 votes
123. Inner Life - I'm Caught Up (In a One Night Love Affair) 212 points / 4 votes
124 (TIE). Tavares - More Than a Woman 212 points / 3 votes
126. KC & the Sunshine Band - Get Down Tonight 210 points / 4 votes

These were mine and obviously too low all of them. More Than a Woman has maybe the best ad libs ever. Each variation sticks in your head as much the chorus. I'm Caught Up is about as pure an example of that unique disco euphoria I can think of. Sideshow is second rate Stylistics but that's still better than most things. Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get sounds like generic soul of the times when you don't pay attention and like the best groove ever when you do. Oh Girl is legitimately unique, like all the top Eugene Record stuff.

Think I nominated "Luv N' Haight" - what a jarring, brilliant album opener. I think there will be a lot of vote-splitting with the Riot tracks. I personally would be happy if half the top ten were from Riot, but it's very much and album-album, not just a collection of discrete tracks - and also I didn't vote.

I don't really get the appeal of Grandma's Hands, but Use Me is obviously great.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 13 April 2017 09:37 (seven years ago) link

to me the appeal is a beautiful song about his grandma set to an irresistible groove. it's like a gospel song about his love for his grandmother. idk it's a nice sentiment i think. i'm also quite dear to his performance on his live at carnegie hall record.

I love Hotline Bling probably more than most but Timmy Thomas is just regular lounge shit. Not a fan of the top 100 so far actually. Rainy Night in Georgia feels more like auldt contemporary than soul and that's an important distinction imo. Oh Girl is unique because it sort of effortlessly blurs that line. Benton's ad libs are in that jazz tradition of not fitting the vibe of the song at all and just being there for their own sake. Use Me is amazing forever.

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 13 April 2017 11:13 (seven years ago) link

Very irregular for lounge, I'd say, which is why I like it.

Two of the greatest r'n'b vocalists ever right there.

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 13 April 2017 13:42 (seven years ago) link

kind of feel we took a swerve to the yawnsome after we hit 100

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Thursday, 13 April 2017 13:48 (seven years ago) link

Just in the 80s, thus far. "The Love I Lost" is great, but I hope "Bad Luck" is still in queue.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 13 April 2017 13:58 (seven years ago) link

Superfly is obviously a classic. Hopefully there will be more Curtis to come in the higher reaches of the poll.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 13 April 2017 14:02 (seven years ago) link

xp I think I had Bad Luck place second on my ballot and considering the six votes for The Love I Lost it's a safe bet.

Kind of hate Riperton but I can't deny this one.

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 13 April 2017 14:05 (seven years ago) link

At least it wasn't my fault: I had Les Fleurs at number 4...

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 13 April 2017 14:06 (seven years ago) link

I voted for Southern Nights. Though the vox on the studio version is a little grating, the live versions are all incredible

Summer Madness is similar to the Timmy Thomas for me in that I love the later pop take on it too much to hear it on it's own.
