I can live with #40.

We're in my favorite stretch of the rollout now, starting at 41. "Tears" was my number 5.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 14:09 (seven years ago) link

Aww, Smokey seems finished. Unless Quiet Storm shows up. Hard to see how it could top Tears of a Clown, though. That is one of the alltime great songs.

xp - I voted for "Children of the Night" as my Stylistics epic; very glad "People" made it even without my help.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 14:31 (seven years ago) link

I had "Wake Up Everybody" really high up on my ballot, but didn't know how popular it was and was not expecting it to place at this point.

One of my discoveries from the nomination process; the intro sounds far ahead of its time.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 15:13 (seven years ago) link

I don't quite get Shuggie Otis. Nice song and all, but for it to finish ahead of the likes of Tears of a Clown and dozens of others just feels wrong.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 14 April 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, especially when compared to the Brothers Johnson version. I prefer that one.

I strongly prefer Shuggie's original over the Brothers Johnson cover - it's a long-time favourite, and was my #10.

My #1. How did EVERYONE not vote for this?!

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 16:14 (seven years ago) link

Did anything run the table on ballots?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 14 April 2017 16:16 (seven years ago) link

Can't stand the rain and Didn't I Blow Your Mind have the lead in number of ballots placed with 8. Which is nuts

(xposts) My guess is that that just wouldn't happen, even though 19 voters is a relatively small number, and even if all 19 submitted 100 songs (doubtful). I bet the odds are extremely long. (Best bets: "Family Affair," "Let's Stay Together.")

clemenza, Friday, 14 April 2017 16:25 (seven years ago) link

didn't vote for either of those so i guess not

human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 April 2017 16:25 (seven years ago) link

i was limited by my own artist restrictions

human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 April 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

Which would be another thing preventing that, anyone who followed a one-artist/one-song rule (which I usually do but didn't here).

clemenza, Friday, 14 April 2017 16:27 (seven years ago) link

What does "run the table" mean? Is it some statistical thing?

ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 16:29 (seven years ago) link

(on "Didn't I...")

I mean, everyone else's entry point into the genre was seeing Jackie Brown as a teenager, right?

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 16:30 (seven years ago) link

One song on 19/19 ballots.

gambling metaphor

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 April 2017 16:31 (seven years ago) link

(xpost) Emphatic no!

clemenza, Friday, 14 April 2017 16:31 (seven years ago) link

OK, I see.

xp - I don't remember the Delphonics in Jackie Brown, but I instantly fell in love with "Across 110th Street" the moment I saw the first trailer.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 16:32 (seven years ago) link

what a great run of selections in the top 50.

that's not my post, Friday, 14 April 2017 16:33 (seven years ago) link

yes, every song in the top 50 has been a 10/10 classic

human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 April 2017 16:34 (seven years ago) link

"Across 100th Street" in that same film was another discovery/motivation for checking out more of this stuff (other than the Motown stuff I already knew, that is--and even then, I always associated Motown with the 60s).

"Didn't I" was Pam Grier/Robert Forster's un/official love theme! It is played like three times in the movie!

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 16:34 (seven years ago) link

I haven't seen Jackie Brown since it came out...

Crazy talk!

What's not to understand about a 10-year-old MJ delivering a vocal with twice the power of most grown ass men, or the greatest bassline in the history of pop music?

Anyway, I didn't vote for it because it came out in 1969.
