yeah I don't get what people think is special about this one, esp compared to some of the monster classics/genre + period-defining tracks that placed behind it

This is a genre where rinsed isn't a factor for me.

Yeah, I hastily assembled my bracket from memory. I didn't give myself enough of a chance to re-listen to everything. I'm sure I would've voted for songs like September if I did.

Nice. Top 4 will be
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XX XX
― kornrulez6969, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:24 (seven years ago) link
One of those songs I respect immensely but never actually play. Think I even left it off the ballot.
― gospodin simmel, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:25 (seven years ago) link
I hope its XXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXX or XXXX XX XX.
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:26 (seven years ago) link
Really hope it's XXXXXXXXXXXX but I can't figure out XXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXX so I might be fine with that too.

My #1 and one of my favorite songs of all time

Only one of the other three placed higher than that one on my ballot, so fingers crossed.

"Across 110th Street" is phenomenal. That other song that placed only because of Guardians of the Galaxy, otoh ...
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:37 (seven years ago) link
And yeah, another one I have Jackie Brown to thank for early exposure. Of course, it was originally the title theme from another film (which I've never seen).
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:37 (seven years ago) link
Might actually be my favorite blaxploitation track but I don't love the genre actually. Missed my ballot. Now, let's end the Curtis and Riot beatification and do this thing justice!

ooh child. it's even in the youtube link.

Ah. For me, its cinematic association remains Boyz N the Hood.
I was rooting for "Superstition" over the other two that are left, but this is a top 5 I take no issue over.

I'm getting kind of triggered by the Guardians of the Galaxy comment. Was it a joke? Hated the way the movie used it.
― gospodin simmel, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:40 (seven years ago) link
Superstition is great too, obviously
Half a joke, half not.
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:41 (seven years ago) link
I think it's also in Crooklyn?
90s films loved this song lol
― Οὖτις, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:41 (seven years ago) link
I want to say I'm cool with the idea of Marvel turning the kids on to some good music, thus perhaps even justifying their continued existence for me, but I get the feeling that the soundtrack of that film was used for LOLZ.
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:43 (seven years ago) link
Superstition is the only truly great funk song not by James Brown imo. It's legit immortal. Everyone tried to ruin it by overuse but it just can't be done. That last dig of the horns at the end is sublime.

One day I'll learn to love Stevie Wonder...
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:44 (seven years ago) link
There's an cross-Atlantic divide here, to be sure. "Band Of Gold" was a 1970 UK #1 and is considered an all-time classic over here, whereas I've literally never heard of Five Stairsteps (sounds great on first listen, though). Why is "O-o-h Child" so well known? It's had 37 million plays on Spotify?!
― mike t-diva, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:45 (seven years ago) link
disappointed that ArchCarrier's youtube link isn't the Sesame Street performance

Movie soundtracks, apparently!
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:45 (seven years ago) link
I love Marvel but sort of hated that movie for the way it used music. Especially my reverence for O-o-h Child was insulted.
― gospodin simmel, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:45 (seven years ago) link
You should read through the Stevie poll threads from way back. That was the time and place where I started loving him.
― ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:46 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, definitely a few of these placements had me assuming a UK bloc influence.
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:46 (seven years ago) link
Also, if you don't love Stevie Wonder, you're doing something wrong.
Why is "O-o-h Child" so well known? It's had 37 million plays on Spotify?!
this is the aforementioned Guardians of the Galaxy effect
― human music...I like it! (voodoo chili), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:47 (seven years ago) link
It was a big hit here (#8), and I suspect there's something very comforting about the song that makes people my age remember it nostalgically.
