I want to say I'm cool with the idea of Marvel turning the kids on to some good music, thus perhaps even justifying their continued existence for me, but I get the feeling that the soundtrack of that film was used for LOLZ.

Superstition is the only truly great funk song not by James Brown imo. It's legit immortal. Everyone tried to ruin it by overuse but it just can't be done. That last dig of the horns at the end is sublime.

There's an cross-Atlantic divide here, to be sure. "Band Of Gold" was a 1970 UK #1 and is considered an all-time classic over here, whereas I've literally never heard of Five Stairsteps (sounds great on first listen, though). Why is "O-o-h Child" so well known? It's had 37 million plays on Spotify?!

Not old and not a fan of the film(s) so here's the third explanation for O-O-H Child: it's fucking beautiful! Not the ooh child part but all those somedays are out of this world.

I like Curtis Mayfield, but I guess I'm anchored to the charts for most of the decade. "Move On Up" didn't even chart...I missed whenever it became famous.

I think there are better Soul albums than Curtis but few better Soul songs than "Move On Up."

Not surprised it didn't chart, unless there's a single edit that I've (thankfully) never heard.

Curtis... is not that good? Riot is but as an album, this is too high for Family Affair alone.

Just reading up on it and was released as a single. It charted in the U.K.

(Please don't think I'm saying Must Chart to Be Great. I'm not--just that songs usually Must Chart to Be Famous, and, by extension, to win polls like this one. So I'm just saying that its fame completely by-passed me.)
