I want to say I'm cool with the idea of Marvel turning the kids on to some good music, thus perhaps even justifying their continued existence for me, but I get the feeling that the soundtrack of that film was used for LOLZ.

Superstition is the only truly great funk song not by James Brown imo. It's legit immortal. Everyone tried to ruin it by overuse but it just can't be done. That last dig of the horns at the end is sublime.

One day I'll learn to love Stevie Wonder...
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:44 (seven years ago) link
There's an cross-Atlantic divide here, to be sure. "Band Of Gold" was a 1970 UK #1 and is considered an all-time classic over here, whereas I've literally never heard of Five Stairsteps (sounds great on first listen, though). Why is "O-o-h Child" so well known? It's had 37 million plays on Spotify?!

disappointed that ArchCarrier's youtube link isn't the Sesame Street performance

Movie soundtracks, apparently!

I love Marvel but sort of hated that movie for the way it used music. Especially my reverence for O-o-h Child was insulted.
― gospodin simmel, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:45 (seven years ago) link
You should read through the Stevie poll threads from way back. That was the time and place where I started loving him.
― ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:46 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, definitely a few of these placements had me assuming a UK bloc influence.

Also, if you don't love Stevie Wonder, you're doing something wrong.
Why is "O-o-h Child" so well known? It's had 37 million plays on Spotify?!
this is the aforementioned Guardians of the Galaxy effect

It was a big hit here (#8), and I suspect there's something very comforting about the song that makes people my age remember it nostalgically.

the funny thing is, those are both great songs lol

I agree! Too many great tracks in the list to pick real joke songs.

"Lady Marmalade" wrecked for me by Christina, et al thanks to my working in a record store at the height of Moulin Rouge.
The Simpsons ruined/immortalized "Ben" for me.

Not old and not a fan of the film(s) so here's the third explanation for O-O-H Child: it's fucking beautiful! Not the ooh child part but all those somedays are out of this world.
― gospodin simmel, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:52 (seven years ago) link
I like Curtis Mayfield, but I guess I'm anchored to the charts for most of the decade. "Move On Up" didn't even chart...I missed whenever it became famous.
― clemenza, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:53 (seven years ago) link
I think there are better Soul albums than Curtis but few better Soul songs than "Move On Up."
Not surprised it didn't chart, unless there's a single edit that I've (thankfully) never heard.
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:54 (seven years ago) link
Curtis... is not that good? Riot is but as an album, this is too high for Family Affair alone.

Just reading up on it and was released as a single. It charted in the U.K.
(Please don't think I'm saying Must Chart to Be Great. I'm not--just that songs usually Must Chart to Be Famous, and, by extension, to win polls like this one. So I'm just saying that its fame completely by-passed me.)

Thanks ArchCarrier for this!

Thanks Arch! This may be my fave poll to date, at least in terms of the sheer range of material that I could vote for/listen to/discover.
I vote 60s next, but only because the 80s is too huge of a listening project for me atm.

I knew Move On Up was going to take this poll as soon as it became apparent early on that the majority of voters were UK based. It's a great great song to be sure but it doesn't get nearly as much love in North America. This was true at the time of its release as well. The Jam cover may also have helped (see also "Stoned Out of My Mind") to cement its mythic status in the UK.
― Ρεμπετολογια, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link
80s R&B is a v grim wasteland imo. There's good stuff but the charts are fucking dire.
― Οὖτις, Friday, 14 April 2017 20:59 (seven years ago) link
Another potential stumbling point for an 80s poll: how would you narrow it down to only certain Prince and MJ tracks?
― some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 14 April 2017 21:01 (seven years ago) link
fwiw, 'Move On Up' only slipped into first place at the very end. 'Family Affair' was #1 for most of the time. The difference in points is also very small.
― ArchCarrier, Friday, 14 April 2017 21:01 (seven years ago) link
My hot take is that I prefer the Destination disco version of "Move On Up."
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 14 April 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link
80s would be interesting I think - classic Stax/Motown/etc face-off will be fun too but idk if there will be many surprises. I feel the continuity between 70s soul/funk/disco and what came after is less mined-out; maybe that's just my own ignorance though.
