The stuff he's done since Sensuous hasn't sounded notably different but I wouldn't surprised if he had something up his sleeve for this one. There must be some reason why he's putting out a new album after this long.
The good news is that the three songs he wrote for Metafive - "Don't Move", "Split Spirit", and "Chemical", are all incredible. He's definitely still on his game.
― frogbs, Thursday, 27 April 2017 20:05 (seven years ago) link
I really wouldn't mind if it sounded like a continuation of Point & Sensuous, but I feel the same way. The album art is also drastically different.

he hasn't been doing stuff under his own name (excepting that weird NHK DESIGN AH thing a couple years back) but he's definitely been busy in the music scene. i really like the salyu x salyu stuff i've heard.
― increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Friday, 28 April 2017 17:02 (seven years ago) link
there's also Constellations of Music, which is basically CM5 but does contain a few original tracks on it (including two by salyu x salyu, one of which is a great cover of "Hammond Song"), plus a song that he did with The Bird and the Bee which sorta fell through the cracks. worth checking out I suppose.
still think "Split Spirit" is my favorite thing he's done in the last decade

― ufo, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link
as much as I like the stuff he's done since Point I do think it comes off sometimes like a collection of parts. those same parts are in this track of course - it really does seem like it uses "Fit Song" as sort of a launch point - but this definitely feels like a completed song. I've listened to it four times now and it's really growing on me.
― frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:34 (seven years ago) link
It's much more grounded in the song than an exercise, which "Fit Song" feels like. Think his time with MetaFive helped him out.
― afriendlypioneer, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:36 (seven years ago) link
yeah there's a real song with a climax to it, more than just a nice intricate groove bit like a lot of Point and Sensuous was.
it feels closer to the salyu x salyu album than either of those actually
― ufo, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:47 (seven years ago) link
maybe I'm just wildly speculating but I'm guessing his recent divorce is gonna factor into the sound here
― frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 16:39 (seven years ago) link
Is anyone getting a faint trace of Hosono from this or am I projecting?
― MaresNest, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:31 (seven years ago) link
i have been listening to Miharu Koshi's "Parallelism" a lot these days and imo Cornelius's Fantasma-and-posts works are super influenced by that stuff. baroque robotic pop with lots of cool percussion, things zipping by, drum-and-bass influences, etc.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 18:39 (seven years ago) link
that album was produced by Hosono in 1984 and i highly recommend for fans of Cornelius. "Toubousha" sounds a lot like "Clash".
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 18:42 (seven years ago) link
it does sound like something on Medicine Compilation. now I hear it.

I just picked it up. I think all 3 NHK records are kind of the same but they're all really tasty - lots of great moments on this one.
Not sure what to think of Ripple Waves yet - I kinda wish the new stuff had been sectioned off into an EP or something, cuz that's all pretty good. I don't have much use for Cornelius remixes...he's one of those musicians that always seems to get it right the first time.
― frogbs, Thursday, 25 October 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link
What's your take on the third one? I've got 1 & 2. 2 is fantastic. Is 3 worth tracking down?
― afriendlypioneer, Monday, 1 April 2019 14:10 (five years ago) link
Yeah. It's more like 2 than 1 - each track is sort of its own thing. The one with Leo Imai is really nice. I think Takahashi makes an appearance too. There is a bit of repetition here (one track is a little jam off "Helix/Spiral" and I think one is repeated from the other volumes) but it's worth getting if you liked the other two. As always the sound design is impeccable. These sort of small, somewhat gimmicky compositions are really up his alley.
― frogbs, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 02:57 (five years ago) link
new one is really nice. in retrospect Mellow Waves feels like a run up to this. its actually kind of funky in spots but overall quite sad. the death of 2 YMO members I think weighs heavy on this. speaking of which it's a bit odd that he decided to re-record "Environmental" since it was just on the Metafive album from last year. I guess it's a much better fit here. anyways the long track "Dream in the Mist" is a real showstopper, could listen to an entire album like that
