Ah that Ghetts track is awesome! Just heard it for the first time this weekend via the Gorgon City remix. I think I prefer the original one.

the pro-calvin sentiments on this thread are upsetting
eheh, yeah, although I didn't really know him before this thread (as I said, I'm disconnected from the mainstream ! I'm even surprised to find out it's a brit making these rnb songs...), I sense there might be something VERY not cool in enjoying stuff by him...but what can I say, these 3 tracks ARE good !
― AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 08:22 (seven years ago) link
Might as well also give my apology: As I said before I haven't liked anything by Calvin Harris prior to these singles. I'm not mindblown about them but him suddenly doing this breezy g-funk found out of nowhere is a nice surprise and I really like that sound it still hasn't beaten to death in my ears (had he even hinted at it before? I don't remember any of his previous singles sounding like this)
I'll have to admit he's really good at using his guest spots in every single I've heard of him tho even the annoying ones.
― dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 13:36 (seven years ago) link
he has some ok filter house tunes, and 'we found love' is one of the best songs ever. he'll probably go to heaven.

definitely bemusedly looking forward to 'funk wav bounces' after harris' pre-summer hat trick

You guys are also giving Calvin Harris much more hate than what he deserves. It's not like he's killing puppies, he just makes crappy music and there's much more worse offenders like say, her ex-gf.

Excuse moi but I just heard despacito for the first time today and had to google it to see if it wasn't a straight up cover of el perdon by nicky jam?????? Which cannot be a particularly obscure song since I found it on one of Spotify's top charts playlist a year or two ago.

Srsly listen to it and tell me

― musically, Sunday, 4 June 2017 23:14 (seven years ago) link
Is Despacito one of the first reggaeton songs you've heard?
El perdon was also a very popular reggaeton song last year featuring Enrique Iglesias (400M plays in spotify). It doesn't sound like despacito at all, at least for me... it's more that mostly all reggaeton sounds similar because it's very limited in what it can do with its beat and producers are very lazy to do something creative with it.
Listen to the top songs by Maluma or Zion & Lennox or J Balvin and you'll probably think they also sound like Despacito.
― dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 5 June 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link
That's kind of my problem with reggaeton. Does wonders for a latin party but it's generic to the point where every new reggaeton hit replaced the last one.
― dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 5 June 2017 15:36 (seven years ago) link
first time i heard "el perdon" i thought it was a remix of enrique's "bailando" b/c some of its lines sound so similar in melody and cadence
― dyl, Monday, 5 June 2017 16:45 (seven years ago) link
I'm no reggaeton expert but I listen to whatever makes it to the chart roundup playlists/global streaming charts/etc, I've never thought that two songs sounded so damn alike until these two though
now that I'm typing this I remember I was in Miami a few weeks ago and a song came on the radio at the restaurant and everyone was jamming to it and I thought "this song sounds a hell of a lot like el perdon" and figured it was some remix or something, obvs it must have been despacito and I had no clue

re: Reggaeton / Despacito - last time reggaeton made a serious chart impact here int he UK AFAICR was in 2005 with 'Gasolina', which I always liked. I prefer the tough, driving sound of that track over the kind I hear on Despacito, which sounds like a track designed by committee to appeal to US pop audiences
