This is not a good album but "Vertigo" is ok

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Friday, 7 July 2017 16:57 (six years ago) link

This'll be a landslide for 'Vertigo' ... which I suspect is the one track that most people will know from this record.

"City of Blinding Lights" has had a new life as commencement/business seminar/death march theme song.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 7 July 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link

i also assume it'll be re-used as the title for an overly budgeted/low box office performing romantic drama starring rachel mcadams and miles teller.

Accurate, but true.

I pretty much gave up on U2 after Pop: a combination of finally being let down by my first favorite band and going to college and discovering worlds of new music. The only new U2 I heard was what was on the radio. "Beautiful Day" was fine, "Walk On" less so, "Vertigo" not very good, definitely not enough for me to bother checking out the albums they came from.

In 2008, my friend played Atomic Bomb on a beach trip and I guess it hit me the right way. I seriously love about half the songs on the album, and even "Vertigo" I'd now say is solid. I'd put it up there as my favorite after Achtung and Zooropa, which would make college me laugh out loud (and likely some of y'all). I can't explain it at all, I know that it's a very conservative, straightforward album for them compared to any of their 80s or 90s albums. I even went back to listen to All That You Can't Leave Behind and listened to the next couple in case they were just as good; nope, it's only Atomic Bomb that does it for me

Original of the Species is the presidential walk-on music we need in these troubled times

Cancel that, I mean City of Blinding Lights. Whoops

U2 suck and i did really like them at one time. i did once think "Bad" (live) was the best song ever, in front of a mirror, the whole bit. just can't drum up an passion for them anymore also The Police, who have probably fallen even further...

You mean Sting's solo career?

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 20 July 2017 02:27 (six years ago) link

I'd vote for "Fast Cars" and the "Neon Lights" cover over anything that made it on this album.
