This thing is a complete mystery. Many of these artists aren't within the same solar system as metal and they didn't even include someone like Michael Bolton who actually did have some semblance of a hard rock career early on. I guess Richard Marx did write songs for Vixen.

Okay maybe not half, but DJ Sammy's "Heaven," DHT's "Listen To Your Heart" and Tupac's posthumous "Broken Wings" cover.

I had a tape copy of this one https://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Final-Countdown-The-Very-Best-Of-Soft-Metal/release/3103571, which has a bit of crossover. I don't recognise some of the songs so maybe it didn't all fit on a C90 and I cut the songs I didn't know. I'd probably vote Poison by Alice Cooper on that one if ILX existed when I was 14.
Of these I only really like the Bangles, INXS and Queen. I might like the Thin Lizzy song given that I quite like Thin Lizzy but I don't know that one.

So do lots of people and I've never been able to understand why. I loved Queen as a young kid (got a night at the opera for my 3rd birthday) but that song has always annoyed me. Always skipped it on the greatest hits album.

Rough choice but I'm going with Richard Marx. So many better 80's choices that this collection.
― yesca, Saturday, 22 July 2017 02:04 (seven years ago) link
well it was aimed at a UK audience which never had rock radio so they picked whatever they thought would appeal to casual people... but aye, there was actual rawk bands with hits they could have included. Most are maybe on the other comps I posted above

7 –Foreigner I Want To Know What Love Is 4:58
― yesca, Saturday, 22 July 2017 02:10 (seven years ago) link
My dad, who was never a rock fan, had that single on 7" when it came out. I think it was #1 here.
The one song that is surprisingly missing from those comps is Kiss - Crazy Nights, which was by far their biggest hit in the UK (until bill and ted) its on all the rock comps here now and oldies stations actually play it.
Yes, that means its much better known than the 70s stuff.*
Odd innit?
*still shite imo
― Odysseus, Saturday, 22 July 2017 02:17 (seven years ago) link
Ha yeah, that's right - 'Crazy Crazy Nights' is far more well known in the UK than 'Rock'n'Roll All Night', 'Love Gun' etc.

This comp should be called "Music."
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 22 July 2017 13:27 (seven years ago) link
Several of these songs are very important to me but I can't imagine calling any of them "soft metal."
I mean, "soft metal" is already ridicklepickle as a category. I would generally take it to mean the quieter ballads of otherwise-metal or metal-adjacent bands. "Silent Lucidity" is probably soft metal. Kiss's "Hard Luck Woman"? "Every Rose Has its Thorn" maybe. "Patience," definitely.
But those are not on the list. Of these I voted for "Broken Wings," because SOMEBODY has to rep for the best non-Sting Sting song.
― leave your emu at the door (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 22 July 2017 14:18 (seven years ago) link
Without looking it up I think it was some kind of charity supergroup a la Hear n'Aid. Their version of Stairway was nowhere near as good as Rolf Harris's if memory serves, but I could be wrong. The singer was Robin MacAuley, who started out in Grand Prix (3rd rate Magnum) and 'progressed' to the Michael Schenker Group, who were re-monickered the MacAuley-Schenker Group in celebration.
I'm sure Neil Murray played bass on it.

Loved this album way too much in high school. It is -- horribly, horribly -- "soft metal." Much like Crazy Nights, in fact, which I loved even more. Jesus. Maybe two of the most plastic sounding things in existence but at the time, with a brand new CD player, it made me feel like the guy in the Maxell ad with his hair blowing back and the lamp sliding past his chair.
