it’s almost always some asshole making a joke out of sexual assault

jesse basically admits to it without actually addressing it

Felt like some of the powers that be were dragging their feet about permanently writing these guys off, but those new allegations should be the nail in the coffin. Truly horrific.
There was some other Warped Tour band a few years back accused of some similar grooming, right? Can't remember which one they were, but it makes me wonder if this is a trend that's particularly common in this scene. Seems like a toxic confluence of technology/fan access + song subject matter perfect for drawing/earning the trust and sympathies of vulnerable young fans. It recasts the band's entire discography in a sinister light, knowing that their albums were effectively a trap used to lure victims.

Great piece. Also this one from 2015 hints at how vast the scope of the problem is: https://medium.com/cuepoint/warped-behavior-sexual-violence-on-tour-8ad218d50bc9
Gotta imagine there's a reckoning coming. How many dozens of bands must have known this stuff went on and turned a blind eye to it?

i was once at a green day show when i was about 15, i was getting a ride home from these friends of a friend's older brother and they were huge nerds who wanted to stay and meet the band afterwards, which i wasn't really interested in but they were my ride home. tre cool (who would've been late 20s at the time) spent the whole time trying to convince a 15/16 year old girl to get on the tour bus with him, and pulled his cock out at some stage with some really flimsy pretext.

When I was in university taking a shuttle bus between campuses, I randomly overheard a girl (roughly my age at the time so I'd say 18-20) talking about how she'd had sex with someone from GD after a show. That's pretty second-hand, obviously, but it's always stayed with me.

Have other band members responded yet?

If anyone ever wants to write a piece about #MeToo and artist fandom, which someone probably should, they'd do well to start with the wildly divergent (and still-unraveling) reactions on the Brand New subreddit.

can't bring myself to read that tbh. used to be a part of the brand new online fan community as a teenager and those people are nuts
sort of hate myself for loving this record as much as I do. but maybe that's what brand new's music is about, and why it speaks to me so much -- so much of it deals in guilt, self-loathing...it feels very earned.
