just sweet, funny, welcoming, generous, never a bad word about anybody

Xp yup.

My love of Dolly presupposes her awesomeness as a human , so don’t nobody come in here and post any shit about her, y’hear now?

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Thursday, 16 November 2017 00:22 (six years ago) link

Yeah I didn't even want to bring up Dolly in case someone comes in and messes with my perception of the world.

JoeStork, Thursday, 16 November 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

Dolly is a sweetheart. One of my friends worked on the lighting for the musical version of 9 To 5 (she was around for the last few weeks as a musical consultant) and when they finished the dress rehearsal she brought out brownies she had baked for the cast and crew.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 16 November 2017 00:29 (six years ago) link

Re: Feldman, there seemed sufficient reason to reserve judgment on that one - Marcus appeared to be suffering some sort of psychotic break or something like it

Plenty of predators have been brought to light in classical music though. See Ian Pace’s blog

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 16 November 2017 00:30 (six years ago) link

Isn’t Dolly constantly donating to charities? I know that only this year he gave money to almost 1000 families who lost their homes in the Tennesse fires.

Although then this bit came out after:

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 00:39 (six years ago) link

Although it doesn’t appear that Dolly was involved?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 00:43 (six years ago) link

Ariel Pink

I basically think he's alright.

PaulTMA, Thursday, 16 November 2017 00:59 (six years ago) link

Not that I think everyone else mentioned itt is a monster deviant who belongs in a cage, but Dolly Parton is the first one I feel comfortable signing off on sans reservations.

Home of the Ill-Considered Gravy Spigot (Old Lunch), Thursday, 16 November 2017 01:04 (six years ago) link

I read that the Grateful Dead arranged for their roadies/crew members to be paid as much per show as the band members.

(At least, that was the case in the '70s...dunno if that extended into the '80s or '90s.)

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 16 November 2017 01:08 (six years ago) link

xpost Like many of her awesome and down-to-earth biographical details are stuff she downplays or keeps private (like the guy she's been married to for basically her entire adult life and her younger siblings who they raised together).

Home of the Ill-Considered Gravy Spigot (Old Lunch), Thursday, 16 November 2017 01:09 (six years ago) link

I feel like it’s harder to pinpoint the artists who are generally awesome people to the terrible ones. It’s hard to hide when you are awful, whereas genuinely decent people do good without expecting it to be a PR stunt and might actually be very private about it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 16 November 2017 01:21 (six years ago) link

haha yeah it helps if you actually know them!

brimstead, Thursday, 16 November 2017 01:59 (six years ago) link

Ray Manzarek gets a lot of anecdotal love.

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Thursday, 16 November 2017 02:04 (six years ago) link

I mean if you bring up Dolly Parton why not bring up Emmylou Harris or Bonnie Raitt or Shelby Lynne etc

ur-oik (rip van wanko), Thursday, 16 November 2017 02:12 (six years ago) link

van morrison seems like a top bloke

brimstead, Thursday, 16 November 2017 02:12 (six years ago) link

I read that the Grateful Dead arranged for their roadies/crew members to be paid as much per show as the band members.

it is also my understanding that they offered health insurance to their roadies, which is so far beyond “good” i don’t even know what the word for it is.

Such a sunny happy-go-lucky fellow.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 09:05 (six years ago) link

yeah lol, on a list of assholes, Van Morrison would be the first to come to my mind to add.

Ludo, Thursday, 16 November 2017 11:58 (six years ago) link

Fairly low-level everyday none of the wider public's business assholism tho, or the other kind?

fake pato is kind of racist, dude (darraghmac), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:10 (six years ago) link

The former.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:36 (six years ago) link

I don't even know if he's an asshole so much as a stereotypical red-faced red-haired did-you-spill-my-pint Ulsterman.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:40 (six years ago) link

whatever happened with bunita marcus? that's the first I saw of that; there seems to be little follow up on her mental state, etc after what sounds like a fairly public, sinead o'connor-esque meltdown.

akm, Thursday, 16 November 2017 13:49 (six years ago) link

Van is ridiculously unpleasant by all accounts. nothing major I guess but a weird inclusion

gospodin simmel, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

I want to believe that Brian Wilson is a good nom for this thread. I'm reading his memoir, I am Brian Wilson (with Ben Greenman), and he comes off as such a tender soul. I do know that he had some aggressive acting-out issues (supposedly he greeted Elvis Presley with a flurry of karate chops), but to me they seem less the mark of an a-hole than of a man unable to regulate the rage left in him by his abusive father. I realize these aren't mutually exclusive characteristics, but in him I definitely sense it to be a case of the latter.

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:01 (six years ago) link

Shirley Collins is definitely a good person.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:19 (six years ago) link

anyone mentioning Ariel Pink should probably check the Ariel Pink thread :/

frogbs, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:23 (six years ago) link

wonder what weyes blood sees in him. guess they're two california weirdos with an interest in retromodern folk, just that one's one of the great artists of our day and the other is a kind of creepy nutcase idk

imago, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:26 (six years ago) link

I'm pretty convinced Hamilton Leithauser is a Very Nice Person.

Josh (phantompenguin), Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:42 (six years ago) link

Lol I was kidding re: Van Morrison

brimstead, Thursday, 16 November 2017 15:42 (six years ago) link

Kirk from Metallica seems like a good guy. Barney from Napalm Death seems like a nice dude, considering.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 November 2017 16:32 (six years ago) link

as far as loveable old dudes in rock go, van morrison is right up there with ginger baker

plp will eat itself (NickB), Thursday, 16 November 2017 16:37 (six years ago) link

Van's not violent as far as I'm aware.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 November 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

yeah i've not really heard much about Van being violent/racist/homophobe/women hating etc.... just being a majorly grumpy fuck in a neil young fashion.
but someone please feel free to enlighten/sadden me?

i've read all the trashiest BBs biographies and offhand i can't really remember anything that cast brian in a bad light. carl seemed like a nice guy too.

that's so fucking unfair to Lars to compare him with that fucking white nationalist junkie

Brian Wilson used to sneak in the blonde in his coke shack behind Marilyn's back and then wrote The Night Is So Young about her!

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:39 (six years ago) link

not to mention perving on Marilyn's sister

Οὖτις, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:41 (six years ago) link

I mean, he does seem like a genuinely nice (if mentally unbalanced) guy but his sexual escapades in the 70s weren't exactly pretty

Οὖτις, Thursday, 16 November 2017 20:41 (six years ago) link

I love her music but not some of her freak-folk US acolytes from the 00's, but she seems so sound.
