jesus christ don’t nominate the whole kendrick album

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

LUST is, like, one of the best songs of 2017. I couldn't not nominate it. sorry

Cardi Acs (imago), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

it’s ok i guess, it’s your vote-splitting funeral

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:24 (six years ago) link

Kendrick has survived vote splitting every year. I'd be surprised if anything besides DNA and HUMBLE crack the top 77.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:24 (six years ago) link

HUMBLE hasn't been nominated yet - it's p clearly one of the album's weaker tracks!

Cardi Acs (imago), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:28 (six years ago) link

Huh, you're right. Well, it wouldn't be ILM if we didn't buck trends.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:29 (six years ago) link

I think it's the strongest track on the album, though, but what do I know

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:29 (six years ago) link

Humble for me is indeed the weakest track on the record tbh

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:33 (six years ago) link

I've been so isolated/insulated from what's actually popular in 2017 that I'm going to have no idea what the top 77 will look like until seandalai emails me the results. There's a lot of good music on the playlists, but I genuinely have no idea what things a consensus will form around. 2017 is/was fucking weird.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:34 (six years ago) link

Same. There's no Realiti (demo) type consensus this year iirc. Doesn't bode well, as it could probably lead to Bodak Yellow running away with it (and I like Cardi B, that song though, not so much).

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:36 (six years ago) link

This is the year of Hailing Drums

Cardi Acs (imago), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:40 (six years ago) link

my sense of ILX's take on Bodak is that it's a good song, not a great one with occasional spikes on either side of the scale. i'd be shocked if it got into the top ten and equally shocked if it wasn't in the top 25.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:41 (six years ago) link

I trust ILM knows it's the year of Bicep's 'Glue'

xxp lol

'Sorority Noise - You’re not As ___ As You Think'

Cecile McLorin Salvant - Dreams and Daggers
Gabriel Garzòn-Montano - Jardin

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:52 (six years ago) link

Prince - Purple Rain Deluxe

Traditionally, this would be ineligible, because it's a reissue of an album previously released (regardless of bonuses). Comps and retrospectives and collections as stand-alones are basically the only way old material is allowed—in albums, at least...previously unreleased tracks are fair game, regardless of when recorded.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 December 2017 23:56 (six years ago) link

So can I nominate the previously commercially unreleased parts of Purple Rain as a new album? I don't really care too much one way or the other tbh but there's a full album worth of material there!

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 25 December 2017 00:04 (six years ago) link

Sorry you're in this pickle, but if these tracks had all come out compiled in something like a "Vault" box set or whatever, the whole thing would be eligible, but albums are reissued with bonuses by the dozens of dozens every year and those have always been dq'ed. Nominate whatever individual tracks you want, though, provided they've never been commercially released before 2017.

Allowing music recorded in the 80s... why bother dqing anything if you're going to do that? Really can't find enough quality music recorded in 16/17?

Bodak yellow will be #1

The Swan and The Lake - Clouds

Just came here to nominate this! I've been listening to it all day in between turkey.

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 00:52 (six years ago) link

yes, it’s a good one. There was brief talk on the balearic thread and I believe people were a little cool on it, but I find myself drawn back to it more than their previous LP, which I found brutally sad at times

lol at the suggestion that I haven't found enough "quality music recorded in 2017," I have a playlist for you

it just seems weird to include old stuff at the expense of actual new stuff, and also I have no idea why previously unreleased bonus tracks would be dqed if you're gonna let collections of prev unreleased old stuff in.. but it's fine I'm down with the unorthodoxy

This is sailing above my wee head but BOdak Yellow just seems like a song that would be on a wide swath of ballots and blah blah lurkers pfork i don't know what I'm talking about per usual

Waiting til the last minute to nominate btw, gotta conserve those noms

brimstead, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 02:16 (six years ago) link

xp, if i had been able to nominate the album, which was the original intent, i likely woulda just let it pass because it's the whole of the album that moved me more than anything else. But those two individual tracks (and those Blasts from the Past albums ; thanks forever Captaine Jay Vee!) were as close to a kaddish for prince as i got this year. they elevated me and my life and i think that's worth a nod in a silly internet talent show. besides which as you point out, i am also conserving silly internet talent show nom nom noms but i don't think the prince contingent was gonna show on those picks in any case so better to play cards early.

Bodak Yellow is fine

crüt, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 03:25 (six years ago) link

the "Cardi B / you know where I'm at / you know where I be" part vaguely reminds me of "Gorilla Pimp" lol

crüt, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link

I have no idea why previously unreleased bonus tracks would be dqed if you're gonna let collections of prev unreleased old stuff in..

Using Purple Rain as an example, it was an album released in 1984, therefore it is ineligible for a 2017 poll in any iteration. "We Can Fuck," a bonus track on the latest reissue, was recorded in 1984, but never heard by anybody nor commercially released, so it is an eligible track. Compilation albums like the Numero Group volumes or whatever, despite consisting of old material, are new creations and are therefore eligible in the albums category, but since most/all of the tracks that comprise them are previously commercially released—even if they were small 7" runs of 200—would be ineligible for the tracks poll if they came out in, say, 1971.

Hopefully that's not too confusing/convoluted.
