Voted for the first time in a year or two! It was a good year for metal and I *still* feel like I missed so much, looking at that nominations list.

I had heard both Krallice releases but hadn't given them enough time. Loum is pretty great, esp, and I just bought it. The Thantifaxath surprises me: pretty eclectic with some dazzlingly intense passages.

I've been listening to In Contact by Caligula's Horse a lot. They blend prog-metal with some mildly djenty elements to uncommonly good effect, and pull off a few gambits that really shouldn't work, most notably a three minute spoken-word-only track (!) and a fifteen-minute closer. Their make-or-break clean vocals sound great to me - there's even a moment in "Dream the Dead" (one of the best openers of the year) that evokes my beloved Anneke-era The Gathering.

I'm taking the time to discover more stuff, there's almost a whole month left.

I voted a week or so ago.

pollrunners have to vote early as seandalai prefers it that way. but like anybody else we can change our ballot if we hear something new we want to include.
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 7 January 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link
I'll try to submit a ballot by week's end

Did anyone give these a listen?
I hope you all give the Solstafir, Sannhet and Au Champ des Morts albums a listen― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus),

Also what did you all think of the Electric Wizard album? It seems that those who didn't like the last few loved this one.
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 9 January 2018 13:47 (six years ago) link
oh and I hope Agalloch fans checked out the excellent Pillorian album. I wonder when the other ex members of Agalloch will get an album out

the Solstafir record is pretty solid
― Simon H., Tuesday, 9 January 2018 13:50 (six years ago) link
Au champ des morts is excellent indeed!
― Siegbran, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 14:15 (six years ago) link
Sannhet is great, although I'm not sure if I would call it metal.
― ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 14:32 (six years ago) link
they will always be Gannnet to me

seandalai how many ballots do we have so far?
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 11 January 2018 16:58 (six years ago) link
On a less false note, I need to also stump for Lich King's insanely fun the Omniclasm, the rare metal album that a) has a non-corny sense of humor and b) still manages to rock the fuck out. Even the sequencing is witty, pairing "Cut the Shit", a rant against scene police and self-serious political bands, with "Our Time to Riot"...a sincere political song about destroying the American government. Also: a song about how awful parenting is ("Preschool Cesspool"), and (along with Kreator) one of the year's two explicitly pro-LGBT thrash songs ("Offense").
― Simon H., Thursday, 11 January 2018 18:58 (six years ago) link
I know this hasn't actually been discussed among the pollrunners yet but I'm wondering if it might be wise to extend the voting period for one more week, since the main trax/albums rollout won't actually wrap up until (I believe) February 2nd, and I'm a little concerned there may not leave be lot of spare air for \metal/ while that's going on
― Simon H., Friday, 12 January 2018 13:35 (six years ago) link
To be honest? I'd prob move it back to Sunday, to give people the weekend to focus on their metal ballots, but I doubt much more would be needed. That way you benefit from the momentum coming off the albums poll
I think this is the first time that metal poll happens after the big poll...? Usually metal poll acts an okay hype vehicle for like the top 2 or 3 to make it onto the albums poll, but I don't really kniw what the effect will be now that we're reversing the order. Shoukd be interesting...
― the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 12 January 2018 18:16 (six years ago) link
Yeah this is a first try at doing it in this order AFAIK
― Simon H., Friday, 12 January 2018 18:18 (six years ago) link
the longer we open the poll the more people put things off and wait til the last hour to vote
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 12 January 2018 18:37 (six years ago) link
and then ask for another 24 hours..
we only have 6 ballots so far btw, hoping to see more campaigning for albums to encourage others.
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 12 January 2018 20:33 (six years ago) link
I will definitely be voting. Be patient.
I likely won't wait until the last minute either since I am very happy with my Top 60 and placing. I had to get some lists together for earlier deadlines and don't anticipate changing much when I vote here.

For those who are interested, I created a Spotify list of my favorite tracks from my favorite albums of 2017. The metal-to-non-metal ratio is about 4-to-1 so if you put it on random and let 'er rip, it won't all be the devil's music. But most of it is.

I totally forgot to nominate Emyn Muil - Elenion Ancalima but it is total Summoning worship that will be high on my ballot, easily better than the actual new Summoning record.
Délétère - Per Aspera Ad Pestilentiam : excellent Canadian BM, excellent mix of the usual fast/furious and catchy rockin' stuff.
Goatpenis is absolutely kickass. Ungfell - Tôtbringære if you like Peste Noire. Slagmaur if you like Ceremony-era Samael. Colotyphus if you like Drudkh. Contaminated if you'd have liked Entombed to be doomier. Lingua Ignota if you like Diamanda Galas.

Goatpenis

billy woods' album Known Unknowns is fantastic and well worth a listen.
Also the Buddy track Find Me was great: https://youtu.be/NWTNbDkalAQ
Other tracks I am campaigning for:Blanck Mass - PleaseFour Tet - Two Thousand and Seventeen

^ ^ ^ Goddamnit wrong thread. NO metal in any of that.
― octobeard, Tuesday, 16 January 2018 07:37 (six years ago) link
I don't know how much appeal it will have, since I'm still kind of puzzled by it still after all these months, but I think Locust Leaves - A Subtler Kind of Light is worthy of consideration. Manages to incorporate tech-death, black metal, progressive metal and ambient within 35 minutes, featuring Ayloss from Spectral Lore on lead guitar. If that helps.
And if you anyone ever liked the idea of Peste Noire but found them too problematic, then Ungfell - Tôtbringære is for you.

This is a total false pick but the Sundays & Cybele album Chaos & Systems is totally tremendous J-psych. The last track here, "Paradise Come" brings to mind a more paisley Acid Mothers Temple:

Saints alive, "Yarinareth, Yarinareth, Yarinareth" is such a motherfucker.
There's always one song on every new JG album that's just reaches and grabs me and convinces me that it's best thing guy has ever done, and this time YYY is absolutely the winner

YYY isn't my favourite track on the album (it's...third?) but the way it dissolves at the end is some insane audio magic

Not voting but just wanted to pop in and thank Siegbran for bringing Lingua Ignota to my attention a little while ago. Loved that record so much I wrote it in for the main poll.

you are allowed to vote for just one album
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 20 January 2018 20:34 (six years ago) link
talking about the big poll, I wonder what/if any metal will make the 77? I seem to remember a previous metal poll winner not making the 77 yet lower down albums did.
Will a lack of metal poll being up first hurt chances of enough consensus to make main poll?
