BRYAN FERRY is talking to Lauren Laverne now about the origins of Roxy Music.
― the pinefox, Friday, 2 February 2018 12:10 (six years ago) link
And about the role of RICHARD WILLIAMS.
She has been playing electronic music, acid house and funk.
― the pinefox, Friday, 2 February 2018 12:56 (six years ago) link
Radcliffe & Maconie started with JESUS JONES 'international bright young thing' followed by Gaz Coombes.
― the pinefox, Friday, 2 February 2018 13:15 (six years ago) link
did you enjoy the new Parliament single you said she played?
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 2 February 2018 13:41 (six years ago) link
No - but to be honest I wasn't paying much attention to it. It probably wasn't my kind of thing.
― the pinefox, Friday, 2 February 2018 13:48 (six years ago) link
but it has Scarface on it! wasn't he in Belle & Sebastian?
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 2 February 2018 13:56 (six years ago) link
I haven't heard of that person.
― the pinefox, Friday, 2 February 2018 14:02 (six years ago) link
JESUS JONES 'international bright young thing' followed by Gaz Coombes
how very apt

Maconie now playing 2nd of 2 tracks to open his programme.
Noel Gallagher, 'it's a beautiful world'.
I think this is on the playlist and gets played several times a day.
― the pinefox, Monday, 19 February 2018 13:05 (six years ago) link
Lauren Laverne played Stereolab's 'miss modular', a record that I imagine people on ILM like.
At last it's not "She Bangs Pour Moi by The Vaselines"
xpost, obv.
― Mark G, Monday, 19 February 2018 13:06 (six years ago) link
I have not heard that!
― the pinefox, Monday, 19 February 2018 13:16 (six years ago) link
aka "She fell, right under my spell" by NG
― Mark G, Monday, 19 February 2018 13:18 (six years ago) link
I think that might be called 'Holy Mountain'.
― the pinefox, Monday, 19 February 2018 13:21 (six years ago) link
mmm...
― Mark G, Monday, 19 February 2018 13:35 (six years ago) link
LLOYD COLE is on at 2:30.
― the pinefox, Monday, 19 February 2018 13:50 (six years ago) link
Radcliffe and Maconie are doing a lot of presenting separately.
It's as though they have fallen out.
― the pinefox, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:11 (six years ago) link
is that why you p and k never speak to me anymore?
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link
i quite like mark radcliffe tbh. dunno what his politics are or anything like that but he seems an okay sort from his radio programmes
― i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 15:51 (six years ago) link
i used to listen to him back when he was on radio 5
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 16:06 (six years ago) link
Radcliffe has a pretty good folk show on R2. On the debit side, he is in a pirate-themed novelty band called Galleon Blast.
― Thomas NAGL (Neil S), Tuesday, 27 February 2018 17:47 (six years ago) link
He was on 5live ??
Surely Radio 1, Radio 2.
The Folk Show is quite good I think but I still think of it as MIKE HARDING.
― the pinefox, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 16:49 (six years ago) link
the radio 5 show was called 'Hit The North'
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 17:33 (six years ago) link
Yeah, Radio 5 used to be a music and news station
― Mark G, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:40 (six years ago) link
No it didn’t
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:47 (six years ago) link
It had some music programming before 1994 but it was absolutely mainly news, current affairs, sport etc.
― Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:50 (six years ago) link

Obligatory "he was in Skrewdriver" post
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 28 February 2018 22:55 (six years ago) link
It was an odd station, I used to listen to the childrens stuff on there and found myself listening to some hugely varied and often wonderful stuff. Have a look at the programmes listed here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Radio_5_(former)

tbf it was in the Chiswick Records era, I was being flip, I don't think he was actually a nazi

what track, ledge?
― loud horn beeping jazzsplaining arse (dog latin), Thursday, 1 March 2018 10:44 (six years ago) link
Radcliffe's 'banter' is really, really sub-par at this stage, his music stage is beyond conservative and boring and he is really, really bad at feigning interest in what phone-in guests have to say. He should probably have been put out to pasture ages ago. Lamacq has been exactly the same for 20 years but at least he sounds like he still actually enjoys music.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 1 March 2018 10:51 (six years ago) link
Err music taste, not stage.
xxp er montreal er off amber
― lana del boy (ledge), Thursday, 1 March 2018 10:58 (six years ago) link
tbf i haven't actually listened to radcliffe since the 90s, it would probably drive me nuts if i had to listen to him now
― i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Thursday, 1 March 2018 10:58 (six years ago) link
xps Can't agree with you there Matt, I don't give a shit about what either of them play really and I usually wrench the dial around when Radcliffe's awful jingles start, but he does sound like he really cares about the music, especially the session acts. Lamacq's er banter and er listener/social media interaction are borderline Partridge.
― lana del boy (ledge), Thursday, 1 March 2018 11:08 (six years ago) link
I am enjoying Ledge's LAMMO impression.
― the pinefox, Thursday, 1 March 2018 14:27 (six years ago) link
I think I agree that Radcliffe is no longer very good.
I wouldn't say he was 'beyond conservative'. I would probably say he was quite settled in his tastes, having already built up a wide and extensive knowledge of popular and roots music.
I think it's true that Lammo still loves Mega City Four and Kingmaker. The passion still burns.

It is a good point about how much children's radio used to be on Radio 5, and how this was all sadly shelved.
A case for Inspector Carmody.
― the pinefox, Thursday, 1 March 2018 14:32 (six years ago) link
Radcliffe has a verbal tic that once you've noticed is very hard to ignore. Sort or "er-ber-ber" or "air-bear-bear", between words.
― mahb, Thursday, 1 March 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link
Lamacq played my mate's band yesterday. I'm dead chuffed for him but at the same time can't stand Lamacq and wish one of the other DJs had played him.
Anyway mandatory plug!

6music still seems to play Noel Gallagher's single on every daytime programme.
I feel that we have surely got the point and heard this enough by now.

right now: Radcliffe & Maconie starting their programme with Shed Seven.
― the pinefox, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 13:03 (six years ago) link
The crucial coveted keynote-sounding opening track slot.
'Going for Gold'.
Oh for gods sake!
ah, that's the reason I don't listen on the daytime.
