damn, this record is gorgeous. decided i'm gonna just listen to their discography all day today
― davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link
i love this band.
i'm less in love with the latest record than earlier ones (i love jen's guitar playing) but it is very good.
they're great live, go see them if you can. they were one of my highlights this past weekend at the (honestly pretty half-assed) eaux claires festival. just as good in the sunshine as the club i saw them in last. plus a joni mitchell cover!

and "say hello." and "you of all people." and "i know it's real"

pretty much a perfect record.

Yeah this is like my platonic ideal of a modern indie rock record, and there’s so much to focus on that it’s easy to overlook the frequently, subtly great lyrics (“and my whole life is in that space: after the cut, before pain”).
― Tim F, Sunday, 28 October 2018 05:49 (five years ago) link
"It Was Not Natural" might be my song of the year, need to keep trying with the rest.
― geoffreyess, Sunday, 28 October 2018 15:44 (five years ago) link
Can't believe it's been 10 years since "Please Concrete" hooked me for life.

it is an excellent record though I think civilian will always be my favorite
― she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 29 October 2018 01:14 (five years ago) link
yeah I love them all but If Children has always been my favorite. they had this sick song called "Half a Double Man" circa 2008, when they were writing and playing out all the songs that ended up on The Knot. I lost the only bootlegs I had of them playing that song... it was sort of like Deerhoof but heavier.

I really love "Evergreen". Seems like a one-off done for some Adult Swim compilation? I don't know much about this band. I liked their last album alright, but never went back. Now I'm re-listening to that as well as sifting through their back catalog.

Hey, I missed that one, thanks for the tip! Adored their last album, nice to hear they're still moving in the same direction.

Just read in a Washington Post review of Bon Iver live, that Jenn Wasner is part of the five-piece band backing Justin Vernon/ Bon Iver on this tour
― curmudgeon, Saturday, 19 October 2019 21:00 (four years ago) link
"In addition to releasing new material, the group is mounting their most ambitious tour yet. Called JOIN, the tour will feature a newly expanded live band performing not only Wye Oak’s music but songs from Stack and Wasner’s respective solo projects, Joyero and Flock of Dimes, and beyond. These performances will include new music, re-imaginings of songs from deep in their catalog, and hidden gems spanning their parallel creative work."
new song is wonderful:

20 minute No Horizon EP out, a collaboration with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. First track "AEIOU" is gorgeous. Reminds me a little of Beach House with those drums and guitars.

Yeah this is lovely - though the use of a children’s choir throughout reminds me oddly of Verspertine.

Love the bits of this flirts with country. I can almost imagine an Emmylou Harris harmony on "Awake for the Sunrise."

this album is really good
what is with the rhythm on "two" though? is it in 15/16 or something?
― ufo, Monday, 12 April 2021 08:06 (three years ago) link
it's so close to being 4/4 but just slightly off-kilter that it's a really strange listen. i can't actually think of any other songs that do the same thing

i think it is in 4/4 but syncopated so the downbeat hits a little before the 4 beat. could be wrong. the chorus is absolutely in 4/4, tho.
― voodoo chili, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 16:32 (three years ago) link
i considered that possibility but it never quite seemed to line up when i counted and she said in an interview it's in a 'weird time signature' which makes me more convinced it's not just a syncopated 4/4
a friend says they think it's in 7/8 but that never quite seemed to line up either for me either, seemed to be between that and 4/4 which is how i got to 15/16. maybe the syncopation just threw me off and i counted wrong though
i am probably going to try transcribing it sometime to be sure because this has been bugging me all week lol
― ufo, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 21:46 (three years ago) link
this article thinks it's in 7/4: https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/thesampler/audio/2018790776/the-sampler-pixie-williams-voom-flock-of-dimes
― voodoo chili, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 22:47 (three years ago) link
feels like it could be, i think i was assuming a lower bpm.
― voodoo chili, Tuesday, 13 April 2021 22:51 (three years ago) link
Sounds like 7/8 to me
― Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Tuesday, 13 April 2021 23:03 (three years ago) link
I also hear it as 7/8 (4+3) all the way through on a quick listen
― Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Wednesday, 14 April 2021 04:16 (three years ago) link
I think that although the first snare hit always seems to land on the 3, sometimes (in strong bars?) maybe the second snare hit is a little early and lands between 6 and 7, while sometimes it's right on the 7, but I think there's always a bar of 7?

ooh, new Flock of Dimes comp gonna have a "Weakness in Me" cover. not to mention an "Amelia" one. and the new songs released so far are great.
