the stage lights and crash barriers are the most distinctive things for comparing to other stage photos.

That issue is number 59, dated 1967.

It looks like the drummer may be playing with no front head on his kick, if that helps at all. Although I'm not even sure of that from the picture. Unusual move on a giant festival stage.
He also seems to have some kind of contraption that keeps his hi-hat stand in place by anchoring it to the kick, never seen one of those before.

xp no Issue 59 is 1970https://www.wolfgangs.com/magazines/rolling-stone-issue-59/magazine/RS59.html

this is true but finding shots from behind the kit/looking out from the stage seems kinda hard with GIS - you google a lot of these festivals and all you get is shots from the crowd and handbills

THE FLOCK
I mean, it is right? Drummer has a dark tanktop, jumping longhair frontman with white sleeveless shirt and tight pants, frontless double kicks
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:26 (five years ago) link
Right, I think I've got it. First of all, from the crash barriers and distinctive monitors at the front of the stage I worked out it's the Bath Festival, 27-29 June, 1970. Here's Canned Heat:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VFTOdmt1HWw/hqdefault.jpg
... and the band in the photo is the Flock on 28th June, 1970.

.. check the leaping singer and the drummer's outfit.

Apparently it was a Jerry Goodman (of Mahavishnu Orchestra) outfit. I had never heard of them before although I certainly know who he is. Want to check them out now.

lol "Can't have no violins in a ROCK AND ROLL poster!"
I'm sure they're on one of those Rock Machine Turns You On type albums - but one of the tracks no-one played.

So they were actually his pre-Mahavisnhu project.
Drummer Ron Karpman doesn't seem to have done a lot outside of The Flock

... their track is a horrible late 60s version of "Tired of Waiting for You"

I only know who the Flock was because WXRT in Chicago used to talk about them like they were some incredible great lost '60s band a la Moby Grape. Didn't actually hear any of their music until today, and it sounds exactly like you'd imagine the Mahavishnu violinist fronting Blood, Sweat & Tears to sound like.

I don't know what UK copyright/persona law was like in 1970, but it also kind of makes sense that they'd use an anonymous photo of a lesser-known band if there was otherwise a risk of paying for use of someone's likeness in an ad.

^^^ lol, exactly how I remember them. I don't remember how I ended up owning their Dinosaur Swamps album as a kid, but I sold it haven't thought about it since. Cool cover though.

Wikipedia sez their saxophonist, one Tom Webb, "participated in" the recording of Bitches Brew, "but [his] performance was not recorded."
So...either he was at the session but his mic/channel was mysteriously turned off, or Tom Webb is a damn liar.

so it took me a sec, but it looks like those pics may have been taken at nearly the same moment, with the latter (non-RS one) reversed (unless the drummer is left-handed).

now I kind of want to start a "photos taking from different angles at approximately the same moment" thread, but too much to do. Would presumably be mostly sports photos anyway.
