I would legit love a "what is Katherine listening to" thread based on your history tbh

I would also read that thread

One of the all-time ILM posters, IMO.

Is Ned's house invitation-only or can we all just go to Ned's house?

If the latter, I vote for that.

maybe i'll just start talking about music on I Love Style instead

Katherine thread would be ace

Mostly I talk about music on here. IRL I hang with friends and listen to music but there’s not as much active discussion, tho we talk about upcoming shows and stuff but it’s easier to talk about life. Otherwise there is the occasional convo with a stranger about say fleetwood Mac and I talk to my friend at the dispensary about Ariana grande and other new music 🎶

Abomination Street (Ross), Sunday, 12 August 2018 15:55 (five years ago) link

I don’t really talk about music IRL except for a few bands with some of my old high school pals. We always talked about Steely Dan, Zeppelin, Cheap Trick, War, blues music, jazz, Doobies, etc.

These days I have a couple fellow school dads who share my normie love of U2 and Pearl Jam so sometimes we’ll talk about how the new U2 jam is their least worthy or whatever. Otherwise I just wind up getting pleasantly surprised when someone comes over and sees a random record and enthuses over it. Unfortunately most of my IRL music talk centers around audiophile shit and I go along with it but I hate it. That and when people start talking about the movie business are the times I “have to go home.”

I'm joking about the shoutboxes but tbrr I started using last.fm in earnest this year (after having a dormant account for, like, a decade) and it has brought a great deal of thinking-about-music pleasure to me

ilm is by far the best music discussion board ive ever come across, so probably nowhere

sleeve, Sunday, 12 August 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link

The way reddit functions makes it a terrible place to discuss music, only well known artists and songs make it to the top of the discussions and inside the threads the top opinions are always the agreeable “this song is awesome” sort of comments.

I do follow several subreddits to keep up to date with things that may have passed under my radar but in general it’s very dull.

i genuinely like it here and also enjoy talking about music with people irl, which i have had more chances to do lately. irl is my preferred method but this is a fine substitute where i feel comfortable.

Time for the why do you come back to ILX thread?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 13 August 2018 02:14 (five years ago) link

My ex and I bonded and started dating due to similarly pedantic interests in music. She would DJ for me and vice versa. She blew me away. But sometimes that felt like limiting, too much talking about music can feel stifling irl ime but ilm is close to my heart

aw man, how did I forget about the acclaimed music board? it's probably the prime internet hotspot for worshiping Scaruffi and reducing music to baseball statistics (unless you count rym's polls/games/surveys board). if your biggest complaint about ilm is that the eoy polling madness only last for about a month, you might want to consider migrating there

mostly a lurker here but I'll state for the record that the rolling threads are my favorite parts of ilm and rolling afropop is my favorite of the rollers, so like that's a double favorite

xp -- I really don't know how people talk about music IRL besides having different taste than I do. like, a semi-regular occurrence when people find out I write about music is to either A) ask me what song's playing over the speakers if we're in public, and even if it's not a gotcha I still probably don't know what song it is, if I can even hear it clearly, or B) ask me who my favorite artist is. so then I say Kristin Hersh, because she's my favorite artist. and the reaction is "who's that?" so now I have to somehow get across like four decades of musical history before I can even get into why she's my favorite artist, and that makes for really shitty conversation for the person on the other end. or sometimes I try to pre-empt that by going reductive music press comparison style: "oh, they're kind of like the Breeders." but that's just such a reductive, shallow way to talk about it, and it makes me feel actively terrible doing it - - and half the time they don't know who they are either. (although this did prompt a kind of amazing "this is great"/"I am old" moment when a couple of people were talking on Facebook about going to their Prospect Park reunion show and someone else posted "wait, this is a band, I thought it was just a bunch of straight people fucking in the park")

basically, it's like you're doing a PhD in, I don't know, obscure 17th-century German literature, the topic is utterly fascinating to you and makes up a huge part of your intellectual and emotional life (best-case academia scenario here, clearly) and then you try to talk about it and someone goes "wait, what's Germany?" and there's this whole realm of potential conversation you just are never going to have. and of course, the people who ask are often dudes, and to most dudes any female musicians besides the obvious few might as well be obscure 17th-century German literature.

and this is one of the better scenarios, really, because what can also happen is being judged for my taste. or judged for my not sharing their taste, more often. like, I don't want to talk to people in record stores because I know for a fact that if they aren't judging me for being a woman in a record store then they're definitely doing so when they see what I buy -- I've seen enough Do Not Buy lists full of the music I love.

Hell

flappy bird, Monday, 13 August 2018 18:36 (five years ago) link

katherine is correct -- being a music-liking woman talking about music irl is fraught with different pitfalls than it is for men. the nature of those pitfalls really depends more on the interlocutors themselves than the topic being discussed. i have found that occasionally people really engage with me and we have a lot to talk about and it's fun/interesting; other times it's like the random older (than me) man at a festival who asked me incredulously about knowing who Evan Parker was. i could be here all day with examples -- the details matter less than the general tenor of the interaction, which for me amounts to different flavors of "fraught" or "not-fraught/organic/comfortable"

there are some very special people who can talk about music irl and grant everyone they talk with the same level of courtesy and regard -- this is a gold standard to aim for imo, and i applaud those who can achieve it.

that said, the fraughtness being what it is,. there is literally no way i would invest anywhere near the amount of time in another music forum as i have in ilm. it would be too energy- and time-consuming. that is why i am never leaving. lol.

xps

Wow, everybody, I’m very glad to hear that!

I guess that’s how it goes in these kinds of threads, though. rob had been running the Rolling Dancehall threads almost singlehandedly for years until longneck showed up, and I duly took his recommendations and put them in my dancehall playlist, without ever posting so much as a “this one is great” (well, maybe once or twice), because I didn’t feel enough of an “expert” to contribute anything of interest.

I guess he’s a stronger man than I am, though. I’m not even the only poster on the Afropop thread, but the lack of feedback is real and I find it hard to deal with sometimes. Like, seriously, no one feels one way or another about this awesome music?

So yeah, I’m really happy that doesn’t really seem to be the case. Still, I’m always curious about how people feel about the tracks that are posted, and curious about other people’s favourites as well.

breastcrawl, Monday, 13 August 2018 19:17 (five years ago) link

Is Ned's house invitation-only or can we all just go to Ned's house?

If the latter, I vote for that.

Sadly, I must ask you to reconsider. It might get crowded.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 13 August 2018 20:13 (five years ago) link

x-post--- Yes, Rob has been doing a great job on the dancehall thread and contributing to soca and afropop/afrobeats as well.

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 August 2018 21:50 (five years ago) link

I barely talk about music here anymore so the question is moot.

Well, that is not quite true, but I try to stick to some of the more narrowcast threads and avoid the ones that tend to become Big Brawls if I can help it.
