their review of the new Orbital album demonstrates something I've always disliked about Pitchfork, their tendency to canonize their old reviews and treat them as though they were all written by the same person
this new album gets a 6.0, while their 2004 "farewell" Blue Album got a 7.3. so there's a line about how good that album was, implicitly in comparison to this new one, even though the 2004 review was written by a different author and the group was in a much different circumstance. I think most Orbital fans would agree that this new one is miles ahead of Blue Album - the same criticisms in this review apply double to that one. alas. they do this sort of thing a lot.

it's probably a concious decision to preserve integrity of their existing base of critique, but yeah, being forced to contextualize a release in accordance with the assertions of totally different review can definitely undermine the authors freedom to build a coherent narrative of his or her own.

OK, trying again: JP is a great writer but this piece sucks: https://pitchfork.com/features/article/reckoning-with-pinegrove/
― flappy bird, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 21:28 (five years ago) link
It's not only the insanely bad timing w/r/t current events, it's that they buried the lede that Pinegrove's shelved record is suddenly coming out in 2 days. Piece itself is bizarre though and shouldn't have been published as is. But ya know $$$

the replies to her tweet with the story are all dudes being like "great piece, i love this band!" and everyone else being "you are trash you rape apologist"
― in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 27 September 2018 06:34 (five years ago) link
that's why it's so disingenuous and shameful that they published. it's a new 'narrative' for the band and a way forward. I get the band's position and their PR strategy, but anyone that plays along fucking sucks
― flappy bird, Thursday, 27 September 2018 06:42 (five years ago) link
burying the lede on the album release is sly for sure.
also i assume dude is independently wealthy considering he had a year to sit around thinking about what he'd done.

if you were an incoming freshman in 2005 who put “everything but rap and country” on your Facebook profile, there was another website growing in popularity that year that covered everything: Pitchfork Media.
I’m being unfair. Pitchfork did cover rap once in a while, but that was new at the time.
yeah they weren't as rap-focused in 2005 as they are now, but there are more than 300 pre-2006 hip hop reviews in the archives, so "once in a while" is also also unfair.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 25 October 2018 14:41 (five years ago) link
I mean they also didn’t cover a lot of metal or punk unless it was hipster contingent stuff.
