as much as i love violvoic i'm voting for gonk tuf hi. idk what to say about it, it's just insane and i love it.

the first half of this is bonkers

now listening to the seismic vibrating-rulers-on-a-table-edge section of violvoic and wishing I had voted for this
i wish this section could go indefinitely, it's so good

i enjoyed the broadcasts quite a bit. since getting the CD box i've been slow to explore the material, but 9 chr0 is a sure favorite - the sheer decrepitude of it. i picture an old jalopy, a mangled printer, Chappie, or Number 5 - twisted and fucked up beyond recognition (almost), but still functioning on some level. maybe its Chappie's car radio (theme music), just after wresting a wrecked auto from a junkyard compactor, as he drives off. It does move the air in satisfying ways, perpetually grinding, folding in on itself.. small fluctuations in signal strength/density and other nuances give it a sort of ever-shifting, slippery animation. definitely a 'choice' Ae track :)

my top 3 from this are six of eight, violvoic (violent voice?) and e0.
violvoic won
― octobeard, Wednesday, 24 October 2018 05:43 (five years ago) link
I was gonna say 9 chr0 is an example of Ae music which could not be made by anyone else, but then I realised the whole 8 hour shebang is so completely them that music like this would literally not exist if they didn't make it. Not many artists can claim that.
― an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 05:58 (five years ago) link
Hm, I might walk that back a bit, I could imagine Aphex, Tim Hecker and even some metal bands making music that feels like some of the tracks here. But the majority of recent Ae music could not come from anyone else.

violvoic contains the most astonishing moment on the whole set so far if I listen on headphones - i.e. when those snarling 'ruler' noises seem to go full binaural 3d about two thirds in

you all are making me wish I'd voted violvoic. In the end I flipped a coin and it came up e0

(violent voice?)
As MatthewK pointed out on another thread, it's a 'voice' from Confield's uviol.
― Toss another shrimpl air on the bbqbbq (ledge), Wednesday, 24 October 2018 10:42 (five years ago) link
uviol is one of the only tracks on Confield I can say I truly enjoy so maybe that's why I like it

wow they are kind of similar aren't they? same rhythm, although violvoic is a lot more violent

it's like the peaceful satellite cruising harmlessly through space in uviol got armed to the teeth and angry.

I read violvoic as "violin voice" (possibly "viola voice"), knowing that a lot of Ae titles are just shorthand between Rob and Sean so that they know how to refer to and id specific tracks

The last two minutes of violvoic is probably my favorite part of all the NTS Sessions

I love the idea that there is a massive parameter space out there, like a quarry, from which their algorithms pull slabs of sound for the guys to cut up and sequence.

I was listening to NTS 2 last night while cooking and violvoic was playing and my 5 year old daughter didn't want to come into the kitchen because the music was "too scary"
― silverfish, Thursday, 25 October 2018 18:55 (five years ago) link
my 21 year old sister in law said the same thing when i was playing elseq! that was a rare occasion, i almost never play recent ae if anyone's in the house.

I ended up voting for violvoic for many of the reasons already stated in this thread, but my second choice would be turbile epic casual, stpl idle, which hasn't really been discussed much. As far as ambient-ish autechre goes, it's one of the better ones they've made. Reminds me a bit of oversteps era autechre (an underrated era), especially Yuop, though in this case a bit lighter and given a lot more space (Yuop pushes you down a bit, turbile lets you float up and away).
― silverfish, Thursday, 1 November 2018 20:16 (five years ago) link
not sure which track it is, but it's one of the more ambient tracks on here that sounds like one of those old toy laughing bags you used to get, but like millions and millions of them... a big bag full of little laughing bags floating like space debris

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.
― System, Friday, 2 November 2018 00:01 (five years ago) link
Less spread than with nts 1, though for me this one is more consistent.
Yuop is great, it builds more than turbile - though that's has a little more variety than it seems on first listen, if you skip through you can hear the main background timbre changing quite radically.

WHAT
― macropuente (map), Friday, 16 November 2018 19:25 (five years ago) link
i know what i'm doing every night for the entire winter
so, in my completely amateur opinion, guessing, totally speculating, based upon listening to 5 of them in full and then scanning across random ones from across all 444 of the videos:
these sound like really slowed down, time-stretched samples. if you time-stretch pretty much anything to a ridiculous degree (like making a half second clip into a 40 second clip), they almost always come out sounding something like this. so if i had to guess, they set up a patch to automatically timestretch samples and then convert them to visual data, then dumped 444 of their audio samples into it and uploaded the results. i've been fucking around with max/msp quite a bit over the last few months, and it's certainly capable of outputting visuals like the ones seen on these videos.
― Karl Malone, Friday, 16 November 2018 19:31 (five years ago) link
i'm gonna grab the audio from a couple of these videos and see if they make any sense when time-stretched back to a 1 or 2 second clip.

this too:
earlier this week shared production files of their own making for various pieces of widely used musical technology from the companies Elektron, Nord, and Akai (see: factmag.com)http://www.factmag.com/2018/11/15/autechre-share-elektron-nord-files-mpc-samples/

going back to NTS because... well my theory is that I'm always around one or two Ae albums behind the latest releases and I want to see if it's clicked any more.
I have to admit, a lot of NTS is impenetrable to me - claustrophobic and arduous for the most part - but violvoic is FANTASTIC
