Yeah no kidding

I've listened to maybe two eps and it largely seems like a goof, kind of like Mike and Tom Eat Snacks. It's like they're playing characters, and at least in the background I have no problem with people playing dumb and ripping on bands they often clearly know are better than they say. My player started a more recent episode, a Christmas episode, and one guy blurts out at the beginning "Christmas is the best holiday." And a few minutes later says "Can I correct something? Christmas is the worst holiday." It's just dumb time-filling trash-talking, like, I dunno, I can't think of anything like it ...

(Needless to say, I don't think I have ever checked out Dave Mustaine's wiki page)

yeah they totally ripped off all those proto-metal Willie Dixon songs

dear god, if that's what they stole Sanitarium from, thank god they improved it

Ugh. Anyway, that's "Tapping into the Emotional Void" by Excel. I saw some more. Supposedly back in their early days the band used to cover songs from the NWOBHM but not reveal they were covers?
Here's another one that people cite:

think people are confusing plagiarism with "used a common chord progression" but
― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 25 January 2019 03:34 (five years ago) link
I love what they did with those licks. I saw some video, maybe a 3-parter, about all the stuff they ripped off, and some of it was pretty tenuous. Other stuff, I got no problem with it, but like Zep it's there.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 January 2019 03:35 (five years ago) link
That Sanitarium thing is not some "common chord progression." It's pretty specific, and I think Hetfield has admitted he copped it.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 January 2019 03:36 (five years ago) link
surprised no mention of Diamond Head's "Dead Reckoning", which they pretty much admitted aping for "Seek and Destroy"
― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 25 January 2019 03:36 (five years ago) link
it's a pretty straight forward open string voicing that keeps the fingers in a fixed position as they move up the fretboard. hell, did Seven Mary Three also rip off the same song?

anyway just sayin Metallica knows what they nicked but lord I think they nicked from better sources. like an assload of Diamond Head on KEA.
― fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 25 January 2019 03:40 (five years ago) link
I can see Excel for "Enter Sandman" in that the drum beat and the build from quiet to heavy both follow.

Lotta Venom in Metallica, too. Like this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbldM7JEIeE
What's funny is that the comments suggest Kurt Cobain ripped it off for "Teen Spirit," which is silly. But you can def. hear bits of "Seek and Destroy around the 1:30 mark.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 January 2019 03:52 (five years ago) link
Anyway, I'm not sure I ever heard about this stuff, but apparently it's a thing for some people. Doesn't make "MoP" any less awesome.

xposty I have a pal that lives near Rob and Kirk and bumps into them all the time at the beach. No surprise, they're apparently pretty cool.

I've also heard wonderful things about Kirk. He's who he appears to be, apparently.

so those guys did the shitty "when doves Cry" in Minn., and they do this one in Manchester. do they do this in every town they play in bearing a super famous, non-metal local act? Anyone know? I guess the famously fussy James and Lars decline to take part, unless they're in Newcastle and its Venom? Did Manchester have a well known NWoBHM band? On the other band, this reminds me that when I saw them at their peak, 88 and 91, and then in 96 and 98, they were really loose and would fuck around multiple times per show…
― veronica moser, Thursday, 20 June 2019 13:52 (four years ago) link
I suggested before the show they might do 10cc, Frank Sidebottom or Simply Red, sadly it wasn't to be
― Captain ACAB (Neil S), Thursday, 20 June 2019 14:14 (four years ago) link
They could do a Joy Division or Buzzcocks tune?
― Siegbran, Thursday, 20 June 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link
After seeing Some Kind of Monster, I can 100% imagine the elevator pitch Kirk gave to James and Lars for this.

I’m enjoying that Hetfield introducing them in the video isn’t enough of an authority, so you turn to ilx0rs. But yeah, they did Take On Me in Oslo, Dancing Queen in Stockholm, etc. I guess if there’s a metal band from the town too, they’ll give you extra value: here they are in Birmingham.https://youtu.be/pgMmALj8-Jk

Their vaguely distinctive yet limited style really doesn’t do those songs any favors
― calstars, Thursday, 20 June 2019 16:50 (four years ago) link
Also I don’t trust them to remember the correct city they’re in on any given night
― calstars, Thursday, 20 June 2019 16:51 (four years ago) link
Nah, the "Alcoholica" days are way behind them. There was an article a while ago that said that they search through Spotify data to make sure that the most-streamed songs in a given city make it into that night's set.
