tuomas: listen to "in the house of yes"
I tried this, and I really like the basic disco groove and the vocals, but the arrangement is way too loaded! Why do they need to have all those extra sounds there, like the weird scratching? Just trust what you have!

going to 45 today. to 29 tomorrow. final 13 on friday.

xpost Guess I'll have to give Salt another go. I feel like I'm really missing out. I just played the S/T this morning and it sounded so good.

Congratulation to MGMT for their upcoming album
Might be one of the best retro 80s synthpop songs of all time. great video too! <3 the Cronenberg phone cases. – Adam Bruneau
Me and Michael wouldn't sound out of place on an old school M83 record. - Ross

MGMT placing twice is pretty wild but "Me and Michael" is pretty undeniable

this is gonna be a big year for repeat appearances
― resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:15 (five years ago) link
Lol, I guess ILX never stops loving sad photocopy synthpop!
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:15 (five years ago) link
MGMT really went in on the videos this time around
― imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:16 (five years ago) link
'Jaipur' was one of my votes, it's gorgeous.

see what happens when Cut Copy stops releasing new albums

Hopefully the title track will make it as well, as it's the best of the lot.

me and michael is lots of fun, love the funfetti synth sounds

I don't rate this song at all btw but they pastiche cronenberg well

and the mutated harmony between the synth line and vocal melody

should be noted that the video of 2000 elefanten isn’t the best way to hear the song because that stretch of dead air in the middle really kills it

the one thing I've been gathering from this list so far is that ILX really loves deadpan, disaffected vocals
― frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:20 (five years ago) link
This is me and my gf's song this year (guess why) and would usually be right up my street but i still didnt feel like throwing it a vote

ok i feel confident tentatively recommending salt to you, spend some time with it

might end up using this year's results as an excuse to kickstart an actual poll on instituting a one-track-per-artist limit as opposed to just whining about it again
― resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

how would that work Simon?
― rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:24 (five years ago) link
Most of us probably did vote one track per artist, but enough people voted for different tracks by some artists that they all made it in?
― imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:25 (five years ago) link
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link
Warning, this Mr. Twin Sister song is not a cover of the still stunningly beautiful after all these years "Jaipur" by Mountain Goats

― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link
The highest vote getter per artist places, all others by said artist are dq'ed. Sounds easy. xps
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:27 (five years ago) link
I don't even remember the earlier Mr Twin Sister track, but "Jaipur" is really good, probably the best new-to-me track so far
― rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link
Mr. Twin Sister's "Jaipur" really makes apparent the continuity with the earlier records by this band, when they were called "Swing Out Sister"
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link
okay I’m back to hating mgmt again now, that one is fucking ghastly, order is restored unto to the world

Yep. With the full results and "pure" placements shared after the poll is done, ideally.
― resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link
I don't like that myself but see what the people think
― imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link
so if I vote for ten 1975 songs, only one of those ten votes counts? tbc, I would also prefer no repeats, just trying to think through how this would affect the poll
― rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link
let's save this discussion for the poll
― resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link
ok
― rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link
tbh if applied to this poll it would kill Geyser, which I am slightly loath to accept tbh as I prefer it to Nobody and it's here on merit
― imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link
here's an idea: every year we do a best of the 80s poll simultaneous to the EOY poll so y'all can get this shit out of your system
― rob, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:32 (five years ago) link
I'm also someone who preferred the previous Mr. Twin Sister album, but I'll have to give Salt another chance. I do think that "Keep on Mixin'" is a great lead-off track (love the polyrhythmic beat), and "Jaipur" sounded nice just now in the poll playlist.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link
If you're voting for 10 tracks by the same artist, may I interest you in the albums poll?
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link
if y'all are having this conversation now i'd like to suggest it should've happened in 2013 or whenever vampire weekend had like thirty tracks in the 77
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (five years ago) link
from a record i liked!
I never vote for tracks that appear on albums I vote for, but that's me.
― Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:34 (five years ago) link
I've probably been suggesting this every year since around then lol
― resident hack (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link
so that would boot out like, 15 songs, give or take? what's the #92 result look like in terms of votes and such?
there'd definitely a strategic element to this, for example "Music is Worth Living For" was not my favorite song on the AWK album but I ranked it higher b/c I knew it was more likely to place than say, "Break the Curse"
― frogbs, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link
I almost never have any tracks/albums overlap, but I made a couple exceptions this year
xpI mean I wouldn't personally do that, I was just thinking of hypotheticals. I am genuinely confused by people who see two tracks by one artist place and think "I hope [track #3] places too"
