'Smoko' could've done with some trimming too.

idk if i would ever classify a song as the opposite of try-hard but this would come close

the backing track is so lovely i would really like a 10 minute edit thanks
the 'get out my hay' bit is an instant flag post. oh my god now there's a milkshake riff. BANNED
― imago, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:32 (five years ago) link
this is the track in the rollout so i'd least accuse of 'trying hard', it's a goofy throwaway she made on stream that happens to be brilliant
― ufo, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:32 (five years ago) link
I'm listening to "Go to Town" rn and it is much more my speed
― resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:32 (five years ago) link
they're a lot more of a craft brew band than charly bliss
This is probably why they went over so well when I played the record at a local brewery.

also this is a fuckin wes montgomery sample, it kicks ass

39: Simmy – “Umahlalela” – 206 points – 9 votesvideo
Sun-El Musician - Africa to the World
http://www.thesinglesjukebox.com/?p=26580
It’s hard to talk about Simmy without talking about Sun-El Musician, who featured her on his last album and produced a good chunk of her solo material. This track is another Sun-El beauty, balancing a million conversant parts (a skipping xylophone, a mumbling bass, an army of sputtering shakers) into a unified, cohesive ecosystem. Simmy’s multi-tracked falsetto is the brightest color in the palette; she divines real emotion from the depths of the groove. Most dance vocalists either dominate a track or sink into it, but Simmy stays atop the beat without getting lost in the noise. Simmy and Sun-El are both integral to the success of “Umahlalela,” and they’re equally integral to the future of pop. – Julian Axelrod
“Umahlalela” teems with so much life that it seems aware of its own existence. Few songs invite listeners to get so deeply lost in their grooves, fewer still make you feel that their warmth is vital nourishment. – Joshua Minsoo Kim

ugh GORGEOUS SONG

and it wasn't even my simmy vote
NOW WE'RE TALKING, ILM.

actually simmy fell off my ballot (i'm sorry!) but i intended to vote for "ubala"
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:42 (five years ago) link
Simmy & Sun-El Musician had a really great year, voted for "Ubala" which will hopefully place too
― ufo, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:42 (five years ago) link
1 2 buckle my moooo
― nashwan, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:43 (five years ago) link
way behind here (yay Simmy!), but this Marott track is superb and actually justifies its length, unlike most of the other long tracks we've had
― rob, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:44 (five years ago) link
damn i need to check out this whole album eventually, huh

simmy's album was one of my definite faves this year though i somehow, to my regret, forgot to vote for it consider this a strong recommendation for both it and Sun-El's 2018 releases

waht
― rob, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:47 (five years ago) link
ok that's amazing. obvs the Simmy album is really good. breastcrawl compared it to KING, which I thought was weird at first but mood-wise it makes a lot of sense
― rob, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:48 (five years ago) link
haha what's next, Sonini?
― ufo, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:48 (five years ago) link
lmao ok, so, sometimes an artist placing twice completely rules
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:49 (five years ago) link
KING comparison is a smart one. NB the discrepancy in votes on those two tracks; really an odd coincidence that they placed next to each other but there you are!
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:49 (five years ago) link
can a mod delete Simon's poll thread now
― rob, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:49 (five years ago) link
Good start to the day. Little Death was my number one. The whole Beths album is great, but it was that one that eventually became the standout. Agree that Not Running is another highlight. There's a clip of them playing Little Death at the RNZ Live Session on YouTube that I must have watched a hundred times. That could possibly win people round, especially those backing vocals in the last minute.
I didn't end up voting for anything by Beach House this year even though I did like the album. Definitely think of them more of an albums act than individual songs.
Keflavik was the last song I added to my ballot after it was highlighted late on, on the voting thread. It does make a nice companion to Neutron Dance as Matt said which I hope is still to come. I think I even had them next to each other on my list.
Didn't vote for Mooo but I can totally see the appeal. It's such a joyful song even if it is a bit long.
I wasn't aware of Simmy until going through the nominations playlist. Ubala and Ngiyesaba left more of an impression on me. Listening to Umahlalela right now and it's obvious I really need to check out her album.

simmy album my #1
love her so much
― nxd, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:52 (five years ago) link
definitely a healthy response
― resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:52 (five years ago) link
"Ubala" is the first track I voted for to place. I hadn't heard it before someone repped for it in the voting thread, and that certainly worked, as stuff like this is right up my alley. So beautiful and strong.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:53 (five years ago) link
"Ubala" is just heavenly
― ufo, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:53 (five years ago) link
lovely songs, even though i still have the fart stench of mooo lingering in my nostrils
― my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:55 (five years ago) link
Oh wait, I'm sorry, I actually voted for the other Simmy track that was nominated, as that one was better. But this is cool tool.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:55 (five years ago) link
Voted for the Simmy album but not for any of her tracks. Happy to see both of these in here!
― human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:56 (five years ago) link
perhaps not worth pointing out, but if ILM had an individual single to get behind with voting, Simmy could well have made the top three
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 14:57 (five years ago) link
orrrr an album *thinking face emoji*
